Chapter 1: What is discussed at the start of this section?
The views and opinions of Layla Rahimi, Marshall Harris, and Mark Grody should not be taken too seriously. Especially when they give advice. Do not take Marshall's analogies literally. Especially when it comes to Russell Dorsey. The sports thoughts of Rahimi, Harris, and Grody may change at any time. It's just sports. Okay, thanks, bye. Rahimi, Harris, and Grody. 10 to 2. On 104.3 The Score.
The frustrating part is, and Mark, you and I talked about this, I'm pretty sure it was off the mic yesterday. When nobody is hitting, when you can't get guys around, when they're on third base, when the last win was May 15th, it starts to add up for all of us who are watching in a way that can be incredibly frustrating. There was no sign of life from the Chicago Cubs.
There is no sign that they are on the verge or close to snapping out of what is now a 10-game losing streak. Losing streak. And now the next pitch. Ian Henson, line drive, base hit, right center. Henson drive in two. Racing on the way to third is Bush. Two-run single, Ian Henson. Nico, shallow right field, and it's a base hit from Nico Horner. Carson Kelly rounds third and scores.
And a big hit with runners in scoring position from Nico Horner. RBI single, it's 3-0 Cubs. And now the next pitch.
Chapter 2: What frustrations do the hosts express about the Cubs' performance?
Drilled in the air, deep right field, back toward the wall and off the wall. A run scores, Pete going for two. He's got a stand-up double. Cubs grab the lead right back. Deep down the right field line. Valdez towards the corner. And it's gone. Bumped by Ian Hatt. Cubs have a real chance to keep this rally going. Conforto drives one in the air. Deep right center. Back toward the wall. Gone.
two run home run michael conforto the o1 pitch bounce to short this should do it swanson shovels to horner don't be juggled it and then two to first in time to end the ball game so the 10 game losing streak is history the cubs win tonight's game by a score of ten to four we are back baby we are back we're back Layla Rahimi, Marshall Harris, Mark Grody. Middays 10 a.m.
to 2 on Chicago Sports Radio. 104.3 The Score. Let's go on this Thursday. In the words of Mac Miller, the late Mac Miller, knock, knock, let the Cubs in in Pittsburgh. Nicely done. Tyler Buterbaugh, this is Rahimi Harris and Grody on 104 Through the Score. It is Mark Grody and Layla Rahimi in with you today.
And for the first time since May 15th, we have a discussion to be had, Mark, where the Cubs have finally, for the first time since Crosstown, won a game. A six-run seventh inning, ladies and gentlemen. The Cubs had the big inning that we were anticipating would eventually happen again sometime in life. Chicago Cubs fans, you are freed.
You may feel free to move about the country more comfortably in your conversations. I spoke to somebody who is... Was, actually. A security guard at Soldier Field for Bears games that I got to know when I was doing sidelines because you get to know all the people down on the field. They do have some great people there. They do. It's a great community.
When you work sidelines, you meet all the ancillary people. You meet the ambulance drivers, all the cool people. And the security people on the field are pretty great. They're awesome. Shout out to everybody. And I don't want to name names because then I'll miss names. But this particular person texted me and said, I'm sorry, man.
I can't listen to any sports talk radio or watch any television on days the Cubs lose. So this has been a very, very difficult time for a lot of people. So you are freed. It's okay today. Will it be okay later today when Paul Skeen pitches? Maybe not. But for today's purposes, Layla, a 10-4 win over the Pirates ending what was a 10-game losing streak. It's a joyous occasion.
Well, it was, and we know we were fed up yesterday, Mark. I was yelling about it in five on it. I felt like I was yelling at kids or something. I'm like, stop it. Stop this losing. I'm tired of this. Don't make me turn the car around. Because there wasn't much more you could say, right? Then stop it. Stop losing. Hit the baseball.
If nothing else, the dam was starting to break on the broadcast side. Let's go back to noon. I can't believe I'm saying this. It ends today. I like that. It's Marshall's birthday. It's Pat Hughes' birthday. Jamison Tyone is facing his former team, and I don't necessarily know that that matters because he's been giving up some home runs. But this has got to stop. Or I don't know. Or else.

Chapter 3: How did the Cubs finally snap their losing streak?
What is non-normal for you? Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's not normal. But I think we all have our, I mean, I generally keep things pretty much the same every day. I think that's a little healthier to do that. Try to promote those habits. So there's nothing that you're willing to share? I wore the jersey a couple games, but that's the normal course of the season.
I'll switch it up, you know, things like that. Baseball-wise, Alex Bregman started to get going a little bit. What about you?
occasionally I'll switch the hairstyle just a little bit haircut maybe a tighter fade but I don't like growing a beard because that's a little bit too much red and you don't want something you do once every six weeks considered superstitious well no this was a lot sooner than six weeks the beard where he says too much red he asked him if he wants to grow a beard he's like it's too much red
So it was okay with the red on top, but he draws the line at the red facial hair. Zach does. That's what I'm saying. I texted Zach and was like, I think you should look into it just to see what happens. Like, get Hank Scorpio, like Sean McVay. You know, grow the red beard and see what occurs. Too much red. We are living in a bearded world right now. There's a lot of beards out there.
The beard style still exists. We're going on about a decade worth of beards right now for men. Like, the beards are... Oh, over that. I would say... You think a couple decades now? I say it probably came onto the scene in like aught eight or aught nine. Yeah, you're probably right. Because remember when baseball players would have the big beards? It was like a novelty.
Who was the San Francisco closer? Brian. Davis. Brian. It's a simple name. But I remember everybody made a big deal. Oh, he's the beard. No, that's a basketball player. That'd be hardened. But yeah, there was a time when it was like Pat Hughes would always... Brian Wilson, he's got the big shaggy beard. Now everybody's got the big shaggy beard. Or a beard, period. But not Zach.
No, he's living a clean-faced lifestyle. The pause from Craig Council and then the flip. Do you do anything different? Right. I don't know. I know that this is very mumbo jumbo, heebie-jeebie, like hippie-dippie, all of those things. But when there's a bad streak going with a team where you know they're not as bad as the streak is making them out to be, I'm not saying they're consistent.
It's not going to twist it. I'm not saying that. But when you know that there's a streak that is not indicative of the team, you look for little disruptions in the energy. And I just felt like yesterday, even before the game, they were due. Yeah. And they like, and I was watching on the television, like pregame, like right before the game had started and they were. They were acknowledging it.
They were taking it on full force. Everybody seemed happy and optimistic. So there was a certain good feel to the day yesterday for the Cubs, even before it started. And let's even do some of the baseball math here. When you've got a four-game series, there's a better than zero chance you're going to win one of the four games.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of this win for the Cubs moving forward?
Now, he's had a tale of feast and famine in the month of May. Mark, he didn't give up a run in his start against Arizona. They won that one 1-0. Ooh, spicy. Eight innings he went. He only gave up two hits in that game. Then he followed it up with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies where he went another eight innings. He had 10 strikeouts in that ballgame.
And then that's when he faced a Phillies team that we know the Cubs luckily faced at a time where they were reeling and they're hot now. That was a 6-0 loss. That was on Sunday the 17th. He only gave up...
a single home run but he gave up five earned runs over five innings pitch so a shorter outing for him for sure and then another short outing against toronto the five innings and four earned runs so he's already given up nine earned runs for the month of may he only gave up six in the entirety of april and that was over six starts the dude is still amazing he's great he's just perhaps not super superhuman maybe he's down to just one super in the super yeah
He is one of, what, three pitchers who are, like, we talk about the top tier. Scooble is one of them who we will, by the way, talk about later on in our show because there are some potential links to the Cubs there with Tariq Scooble. But, yeah, he's a unicorn in Major League Baseball right now. Colin Ray will be going for the Cubs today with his .483 ERA. He was very good today.
In his last start against Houston, seven innings, he had been a couple of rough starts previously for Colin Ray. So that's what we're talking about. If we are to talk about the Cubs winning two games in a row, which would be nice. You should be able... I also thought that they would take the series against the Astros. Silly me at home. Sitting right there for them.
That one's going to bother me, especially if it comes down to a one-game situation to make a wild card or something. That's going to sit with me. But you should be able to split. a four-game set against Pittsburgh. Should, but the problem is they're going to make it tough on you today with Paul Skeens on the hill. Yeah, no doubt about it, but there are ways to break through.
And who knows, maybe the Cubs were in earnest unlocked yesterday. Unlocked! Unlocked me! The Ian Happ-Homer was great, but the real unlocking in that game yesterday was in the first inning that... Base is loaded, nobody out. I don't know how you took that in, Layla, but I was suddenly nervous because we've seen so much of this. Cubs with runners on first and second. You're preparing yourself.
And then Alex Bregman strikes out. So I'm like, oh, God, here we go. And then Ian Happ comes up and just drills one to right center field, a couple runs scored, and there was just, I felt relief for Ian Happ, for the Cubs in that moment, the dugout.
You could just feel it through the television screen, the relief from that hit with the bases loaded, had been nobody out, with Bregman failing to come through in that spot. So I thought that right there may have been the biggest moment of the game, despite the huge home run that Happ hit as well.

Chapter 5: What humorous moments occur involving 'acidophilus'?
Acidophilus! That's Mark Grody as somebody saying the word acidophilus. I don't know who it was. Standard play-by-play guy? Yes.
Chapter 6: How does coffee impact gut health according to the discussion?
Acidophilus! Acidophilus had a good second-inning performance. The studies show that coffee notably increased the presence of good bacteria like Agaterla SP and psychrobacterium. I think it's curturum in coffee drinkers. That's about enough out of you. What are these words you're using today? They're words that are, they just, hey, it's just scientific terms, okay? It's just memorization.
This is not some deductive reasoning I have. Okay. It's just reading. Okay. Both bacteria are thought to play a role in eliminating unhealthy bacteria and stomach infections. Really? Yeah, so it prevents the itis and whatnot. Well, what about the acid in the coffee that upsets your stomach? Because there's that study, too. IDK. I'm just reading about the good stuff.
Decaf coffee drinkers, meanwhile, showed improvements in learning and memory. Damn it, decaf! Which may have been a result of components like polyphenols that provide cognitive benefits. Caffeine was linked to reduced feelings of anxiety. Reduced feelings of anxiety and improved attention. Which I think is also just the nature of a stimulant. Absolutely right. Caffeine pills. Yes, that's right.
Unless you're Jesse from Save of the Bell. Jesse! I'm so excited. I'm so scared. So they say coffee is only part of the story in this new study. However, these are good things. Sometimes the thing you like can be good for you. What a thought.
This went way better than I thought it was going to because I thought for sure you were going to tell me why I shouldn't be drinking all the coffee that's in front of me right now. That, ladies and gentlemen, is called a tease. That's how we do it. Nice job. Yeah. You fooled all of us, Layla. So drink your coffee today. Drink it. The massive study told you to do so. Five on it is next.
This hour is brought to you by Jewel Osco. Number one. What was the best part of the Cubs breaking their 10-game losing streak yesterday in the 10-4 win over the Pirates? I think it was the part where the Cubs won. Not to be so sarcastic. It was the fact that everybody seemed to want to hit yesterday. And your life gets easier when your lineup hits baseballs. I know it's the hardest thing to do.
Hit a round ball with a round bat. It's not easy. But some of these guys make it look easy at times. So to see all these people up and down the lineup. When you've got Nico Horner with two hits. When you've got Alex Bregman with two. Ian Happ with two, including a home run. Carson Kelly with two yet again. Dansby. Dansby contributed. So he also had two hits in this game.
Michael Conforto with a no-doubter home run. It was the hit parade. 14 hits overall. You score 10 runs off of that. You're winning the game. That's what's happening. Adding on to that, yeah, you had five Cubs players with two hits in the game. Oh, my goodness. What a revelation that was. But for me, the single best part of the game yesterday happened in the first inning.
There I was watching the Cubs sitting on my couch, Dave the Cat meowing in the kitchen. Minding his own. business. Minding his own business because he wanted some of the wet food. I'm like, Dave, the Cubs have loaded the bases. There's been a runners in scoring position problem. Bases loaded. Nobody out. Alex Bregman comes up to the plate and strikes out. I'm like... Oh, no. Here we go again.
