Hello again, everybody, and welcome back into the Take the North Podcast, along with Dan Weederer of the Athletic, who is stationed at Hallis Hall right now. I am Mark Grody of one oh four three the score. I am in downtown Chicago. What's going on in the North Shore, Danny Boy? How are you?
Yeah, I'm glad you used the word stationed, because I feel like I'm in the space station right now in this dark room in the back of the house. All good lighting, uh, but busy day out here in Lake Forest, Mark Grody. This is one of those, one of those ones. We've talked about them a lot over our time together. There are days that just seem really busy, really eventful, really newsy. This is certainly uh one of those weeks that qualifies as as a a busy, newsy day at 1920 football drive.
Yeah, and let's let's get right into it and let's start with the headline, and that is the quarterback situation. And I know that Tyson Bajan was nowhere to be found because he's in concussion protocol. It's the same deal with Caleb Williams. He is hurt right now with a hamstring injury. So it is at least for today, Dan, it was Case Keenum that was the quarterback on the practice field, along with, I guess. Miller Moss, but not an active quarterback. He is your practice squad quarterback. So right now, as we record on Wednesday, it's Case Keenum the quarterback. And to be clear, he has not been named the starting quarterback for Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.
We get out to practice, and as you know, Mark Grody, we get to watch stretching and the first period of individual drills. And so you get out there and we're a week removed from the Bears scoring fifty-nine points and everyone thinking, you know, can they score a thousand this week? And the next week you're coming off a three-point loss, and you go out to practice on Wednesday, and it's Miller Moss and Case Keenum taking the snaps in the orange jerseys. That's a jarring sight to see. And to wrap your brain around this idea that, oh yeah, QB1. One is on the shelf. QB2 is also on the shelf. 38-year-old 15th year veteran Case Keenum might be in line to take center stage on Monday night against Bic Fangio against a loaded Philadelphia Eagles defense.
This is a really tough spot for the Bears to be in. They have taken the right tone today out here at Hellis Hall. Ben Johnson called it an opportunity and said that he expects certain people that you wouldn't expect to emerge. Somebody's going to do that. Somebody's going to become a breakthrough player this week. It's a good attitude to have. But man, this is a major, major challenge to be down to QB three, no matter how experienced Case Keena may be.
It really is. And it's jarring for a lot of us, including you, Dan, and myself, who have been watching or covering this franchise in my case since the the nineteen eighties. Dan's a little bit younger, so would you say your point of reference is more like the nineteen nineties? No, you remember the nineteen eighties. I I got
the I I got the back half of the eighties covered. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. So so it's like w and and I'm sure a lot of our listeners, maybe the younger ones, have not had to deal with what we have had to deal with our entire lives. And that's the third string quarterback story. You know, it's like it has been omnipresent. Now it's not the same because I'm pretty sure the Bears have a franchise quarterback, but the franchise quarterback Caleb Williams is hurt. So this puts us in the This sort of hellish place right now, and that's no slight to Case Keenum, whom we'll hear from, and he's capable and all of that. And Tyson Bajent is capable if he is somehow to miraculously recover. But it's it is relative to the hope. You already mentioned it, the fifty-nine points in the first game.
