Chapter 1: Who is Edward Cabrera and why is he important to the Cubs?
Layla Rahimi, Marshall Harris, Mark Grody, Rahimi, Harrison, Grody on 104.3 The Score. Pitch on the way to Pete. Swung on, hit in the air, deep center field. This ball's got a chance. Gone! Three-run Homer, Pete, Crow, Armstrong. And that one opens up an 8-3 lead. What's up, everybody?
Yeah, P. Crowe Armstrong, that was an incredible home run. And for a second, just for a second, as we thank Pat Hughes and our Cubs radio network for the call, Marshall, just for a second, didn't he look like he didn't know if it was out or not? It was like, wait for it. Wait for it.
I'll be honest. I didn't know if it was out or not. I was like, because they were talking about him watching the broadcast. They're literally talking about PCA getting a home run. And in that vein, he hits the ball hard. And I was like, oh, that looks like a long fly out to center and just kind of kept going.
I am not wish casting here. But when I tell you that at that time of night in that ballpark, having worked there for a year. That is a ridiculously difficult thing to do. Hit it straightaway center when the Marine layer absolutely drags on that ball. I talked about Alex Bregman getting pet code yesterday or day before yesterday. That is hard.
And that was as encouraging to see as anything else from the Cubs 8-3 win over the Padres. This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. We continue Cubs discussion. White Sox next because they got a chance for a sweep today. And in the meantime... I think it was a complete win, what we saw last night. Edward Cabrera comes out. He does his job. He looked great out there.
And we have a stopper, I feel like, in what he's able to do. He goes five and two-thirds, three earned runs, only one walk, seven strikeouts. I just really enjoy watching him on the mound and continue to grow more and more happy to see him on the mound every five days. And then the Cubs back him up with some key run support, especially with two outs.
There was a lot to really like about the game yesterday.
No, I think getting the run support was huge for this one. He gets a 2-0 early lead for Dansby Swanson, who had to lead the game with a left glute cramp.
You know, we talk about dad strength, but maybe we don't talk enough about other dad ailments.

Chapter 2: What did Edward Cabrera's performance look like in the last game?
We thought that he was going to be out for the game with a sore toe.
I just want to point out that WAP is very different from WAP and like Cardi B. I just want to make sure everybody understands WAP is just a sound effect. It's a little onomatopoeia for the people who like literary devices. It's a little Batman-esque, huh? Batman pow, bam, ta-dow, however you want to put it.
I don't think ta-dow was in Batman, but I'm with you.
It's a bummer when you talk and then WAP, WAP. I don't think I've ever heard anybody say WAP, actually. Have you heard that as a sound effect?
No, but PCA's out there, man. You know, he helped Chris in our studio with the coffee spill and the let's blink and go. He's on one right now, probably.
The other thing I want to point out, Layla, with Pete Crow Armstrong, he talks about how good that lineup is from top to bottom. He would know because guess what? He's been at the bottom for the majority of the season in the 8-hole or the 9-hole. And understand this. With runners in scoring position, he's batting .333 and slugging .455.
With runners in scoring position and two out, he's hitting .308 and slugging .615. Those are numbers, if you get that out of a guy in the bottom of your order, you are going to have success.
And again, like, what did I say yesterday when we saw the Padres beat the Cubs?

Chapter 3: How did the Cubs provide support for Cabrera during the game?
Look at how they use their pinch hitting. You know, Gavin Sheets, for example. Look at how that bullpen, which typically we know, is absolutely shut down once they get Morojo in hand and Mason Miller on the mound. Miller, they worked. And... I'm one of those people where I think it carries into the next day. I just do.
I feel like more often than not, players will tell you that there's something they can take away from at least battling enough against a strong closer like that, where the next day it might work in their favor. and the Cubs definitely had hitting work in their favor. Pinch hitting worked last night. You saw Cabrera work.
That was a game where, and again, when you see the improvement out of PCA, you put it together. That's a complete performance.
Wow. Nine men left on base, but they went 4-14 with runners in scoring position. Again, I think for that offense, scoring early, makes it happen because if you score early, guess what? You could score early and often. You can't score early and often if you don't score early. So getting runs in the second inning, I think was a big key to this. And then Edward Cabrera settles in.
And although he gave up runs in three different innings, it didn't matter because he limited the damage.
That's what he does. He's really good about staying within himself that way, I feel like. His changeup is ridiculous. I feel like, where would we be right now without Edward Cabrera in that trade?
They'd be in a lot of trouble because that means Colin Ray, Javier's side. I'm trying to think of who the fifth starter would be at this moment. Maybe Jordan Wicks. Yeah, Jordan Wicks.
Who we might still see based on all of this.
Listen, we're not quite to... put some names in a bag and pull one out territory.

Chapter 4: What challenges did Cabrera face during the game?
But with the moves that they made recently just to get the bullpen handled, it is a lot of, oh, let me find out more about this player who I know very little about because two weeks ago I wasn't thinking he had a possibility of being on the roster, Vince Velasquez.
He had a good run. A single run? Yeah.
One sprint?
I mean, if you had to guess whether or not Vince Velasquez was going to see playing time with the Cubs at the big league level, wouldn't you have guessed against it? So then...
He got that real big league moment where it was like, yeah, we need you to come into this game, and it's a loss, and you're just going to have to wear it, and then bye, peace out, you're done.
That'll do, Vince. That'll do. But did it add to his service time? Yes, it did. Sometimes people are just out here trying to add to service time. That might have been Vince Velasquez.
Well, I think we're all trying to add to service time. If you're a professional athlete, you know that's pension purposes and everything else. You're trying to add to your resume at all times.
All right, so win for Vince Velasquez is how I see it. We got the rubber match today, and I love being able to say that after what happened in game one. Keep listening for your chance to qualify for the score sweet stakes when you hear this cuticle.
I love Wrigley. I loved it as a kid. I loved it as a player. I love it as a broadcaster.
