Chapter 1: What were Kevin Fishbane's observations from Bears OTAs?
Kevin Fishbane. I got fishy business. Okay, Fishbane. Bears beat Ryder for the Athletic.
Are you talking about how the Bears had 10 days off between games after their two best passing performances in the first play from scrimmage against an all-blitzing defense was to let a blitzer come free? Kevin Fishbane talking Bears. Hey, Kevin. Kevin Fishbane from the Athletic. I love your name. It's a great name. Yeah, great name.
On Chicago Sports Radio, 104.3 The Score.
You know, I mean, some traditions, we just, we don't even try to mess with them. When there's Bears football and there's a Friday and Kevin Fishbane exists, Fishbane on Friday is just what it is. And he's kind enough to join us yet again here on Rahimi Harris and Grody. He is also on Twitch, twitch.tv slash the score Chicago.
He is the senior writer at The Athletic covering the Bears, host of Breaking In with Kevin Fishbane, a sports media podcast. And he is on Instagram at Kevin Fishbane. And he's on X at K Fishbane. Hey, Kevin.
Hey, guys. Happy Friday.
Indeed. And you are at Hallis Hall where you got to hear not only Ben Johnson yesterday, but the players and then also the OTAs continue. What have been your biggest takeaways so far?
Well, I mean, yesterday was Luther Burden Day, right? Like, that was the biggest moment, I think, just to hear what the head coach had to say about the second-year wide receiver. It's interesting because I think we all knew heading into this offseason, heading into training camp, that he's going to be that guy. You know, everyone's going to be wanting the second-year jump.
He's going to be this fantasy breakout candidate everywhere. And to hear Ben Johnson say, I'm buying stock in Luther Burden –

Chapter 2: How is Caleb Williams expected to perform as a quarterback in 2026?
Like they have to figure out, okay, what are my training hours that a coach isn't giving me? I have to do this on my own until I'm in the building because they have all that off time. And obviously Luther Burden has done everything right. to put himself in this position where you can have these high expectations of what he can be. And, I mean, you look at the numbers, too.
You know, whatever it was in those last, you know, eight games of the season, he was one of the, you know, he and Colson Loveland were like the two top rookies in football. It wasn't just rookies. The numbers they were pointing out receiving-wise was really impressive. And now we're going to be able to, you know, hopefully Luther Burns stays healthy and you're able to see that for a full season.
Now with him as right there, Roma Dunzey is the top of the target.
What do you think of – a couple questions here on Caleb Williams, Kevin Fishbane, and that is what do you think about what Ben Johnson is saying about Caleb Williams and specifically where he is, again, emphasizing and expecting him to be better, the completion percentage to go up, talking about obviously – this is not on him, but the drops and the scramble drill and all the challenges that he's throwing.
What do you think about that from Ben Johnson and – What do you also think about the mostly national conversation that's going on that Caleb Williams is already being anointed into the top five quarterbacks in the league by some loud voices around the nation?
I'm a quiet voice, Mark. I let my work do the talking for me.
You're a voice of reason. That's why I'm asking you this question. It's going to be hyperbole-free, I bet.
Well, yeah, I do try to avoid hyperbole unless I'm talking about a college sports team that is driving me nuts or I believe is going to win the championship. The completion percentage thing, I think we're all going to be watching it all spring and summer, ball placement. Are guys getting open quicker? Is he finding them? Is he taking those checkdowns?
You know, yesterday, first time seeing him out there on the field at House Hall and, you know, looked pretty good for the most part. I think if you look at last season, I think everyone would say it was a successful season for the Chicago Bears. Now think of that season if Caleb Williams was just average from a completion percentage standpoint, right? Yeah.

Chapter 3: What are the expectations for Luther Burden's development this season?
Like the start and the finish of plays with his pass rush. And I like the fact that a guy in his 12th season at his age is embracing being at OTAs. He's embracing this whole strip it all down to the nuts and bolts and let's work on fundamentals and techniques because, you know,
You can't expect a guy at his age necessarily to put up Pro Bowl numbers, but you should have expected, based on that salary certainly, what he has done in his career, to be more impactful against the opposing quarterback than he was last year. And he had higher expectations for himself. So I think that is absolutely the right attitude for him to have.
You know, Dan Weider wrote a great feature on Grady at the end of last season that really highlighted the things that Grady Jarrett meant to the team off the field. Now, look, they're not paying him what they're paying him to be a leader. I get that. But there is some intangibles that are important.
And he's playing next to a guy in Jervon Dexter that this is a massive year for Dexter, the last year of his rookie deal. You look at all these question marks about the pass rush and that they haven't brought anybody in. who are you going to rely on to be the one to say, hey, guys, we do need to get back to our fundamentals. We can be better than this. It's a voice like Grady Jarrett.
So similar to the way the head coach sets the tone, I thought it was great to see Grady Jarrett kind of set the tone for himself, as you said, Layla, but also get that going for that whole defensive line, which is going to be kind of the position group that is going to be scrutinized from here until the season gets going, until we see that it could be better without adding that top-level guys that people were hoping for.
He even said that he owes the Bears a better year relative to last year, and there's a bunch of guys on that defense who we could probably say the same of. So how did that Caleb Williams 67-yard pass to Roma Dunzay look, and how big of a season is this for Roma Dunzay?
I can't confirm this, Mark, but there might be a statue being made to put on field four in the backfield of Hal's Hall. It's everywhere. It's everywhere. Of the jump throw. 67 yards in the air. Look, it was incredible. I mean, it's one of those things, too. First of all, there was a flag on the play, and it was offside. So you want to add another thing to Caleb Williams. Free play.
Free play, right? How many quarterbacks have Bears fans been screaming at their TVs, take advantage of the free play? Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers against the Bears a million times, right?

Chapter 4: How does the Bears coaching staff view Caleb Williams' progress?
Well, then there's also what John Heyman had to say, and he was on with Mullion High yesterday.
At this point, the Tigers are, I think they're 12 games under, something like that. At this point, it looks likely that a trade of Scooble will happen. He's had two bullpen sessions, which are encouraging. I mean, I think they're reported to be excellent or something like that, but they're just bullpen sessions. So we'll see. He should be back sometime in June. The original guess was two months.
He's going to do better than that. He had the nanoscope type surgery. And, you know, if he shows that he's close to what he's been in the past, two-time Cy Young winner, and they're playing anything like what they're playing right now, he is going to be traded. So, I mean, at this stage, you know, I would put it at a 75% chance. The Tigers certainly have been thinking about it.
Because if you recall, a couple of years ago, they sold off and then they rallied and made the playoffs. And last year, they had a huge lead on the Guardians and like, I don't know, 10 or 15 games and ended up blowing it. So things obviously can change. But at this stage, I would say a trade looks bad. Very likely. And I do think the link is big.
The one question I have with the Cubs is their top young players are opposition players who are the arms that they're going to trade. They're obviously not trading Horton. Their top young players are probably Shaw, Ballesteros, Alcantara. You know, they're all position players. So I do think, though, the connection is big with Scott Harris playing.
being with the Cubs in the 2016 championship and after that with Jed Hoyer. So I do think that speculatively their chances are as good as anyone's.
So would you like to hear the fits that were ranked by Jim Bowden?
Yes, please.
Since we went over all of this. Number one is a little team you may have heard of called the Dodgers.

Chapter 5: What challenges does Caleb Williams face in improving his completion percentage?
Did they need Kyle Tucker?
But the question at the beginning of the season was for the Dodgers to have a Cy Young nationally contender, and this is before Shohei Otani went on his insane tear on the mound, you know, he also hits, was the question of whether or not any pitcher with the Dodgers was going to get enough innings to even qualify because they were so deep from a starting rotation standpoint.
Yeah, yeah. So they're gluttonous. We know that. I don't know that they need anything, but I bet they're going to go get them. I bet they're going to go get them. That would be surprising. I love the Tampa Bay angle, though. I like the idea of them doing something actual. Who did – Milwaukee did one time – Was it a starting pitcher they had?
Who did the Brewers, they made a deadline deal for within the last 10 years?
Mike Fiers? When they traded away Mike Fiers and Carlos Gomez? No, because that was them selling, not buying.
You're thinking C.C. Sabathia? C.C. Sabathia is exactly what I'm thinking of. Thank you. Thank you. C.C. was the guy that they... So it's not unprecedented for Milwaukee, but rare when they would do something like that. Let's hope they don't strike this year.
And they might have the National League Cy Young winner if Mizorowski keeps this up.
Good God, stop it. Stop it.
I can only tell you what I'm seeing.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the Bears' offensive strategy on quarterback performance?
That seems to be the skepticism among executives is whether or not the Tigers truly believe they're sellers. And that's very much a part of this as well. It's not only do you have the price to pay, but it's are we even in the position to where we think we're completely out of it yet?
Right, and I guess it would probably, unless you're 20 games out or under, it'd be silly to say that in May. Although, guess what's coming fast and furiously? June.
Yeah.
June. It's May 29th today, folks. Pay your mortgage.
When the last place teams in their respective divisions...
are four games out of a wild card six games and six games out of a wild card that doesn't give me the indication that they're like okay yeah we're done yeah maybe the angels you know maybe that gap widens but everybody else i like the red socks the red socks are still only four games out of a wild card is mike trout still healthy yes okay just just checking Man.
I heard about him a lot in the beginning of the season. I haven't heard about him much lately.
Well, he's got a no-trade clause, though.
Yeah, but do you think he would waive it for the Dodgers? Do you think he would waive it for the Cubs?
