Happy Friday indeed. Happy day off. Happy break from the Bears because once you get into that that early rhythm man, these are long, exhausting days, and a day off means everything. But Kevin, how would you summarize camp so far? If I'm looking at this as sort of halftime right now, even though it's probably not really halftime, how what what do you what's standard?
Well, I think compared to last year's camp, Mark, the offense is way ahead, which it should be. We expected it. It's not surprising, but it's still good to see in this city an offense have a little rhythm and and operate smoothly. Um, you guys probably saw the two minute drill yesterday. Caleb Williams six for six, finish with a touchdown, first play of team drills earlier in practice with a touchdown of Roman Dunze. So you're you're seeing a lot of progress. The other thing about the offense that I've think is really promising and encouraging is I think the two best players in the field have probably been Colson Loveland and Luther Berta, in terms of the skill players. And that's what you want to see out of guys who have a lot of hype for them to show that they can live up to it this summer.
It's still the summer, still training camp, but you could feel good about what those two are. Brain. The the other summary of camp so far. Is y you know, the injuries are just uh there's a looming thing, right? Like You've got obviously Braxton Jones and Montez Sweat left yesterday. You're hoping those are minor injuries, right? You had two reserve defensive backs go down and what did not look like minor injuries. We have no update on Kyler Gordon. Um, Keyshawn Elliott, Shamar Turner. Uh so yes, TJ Words back, that's good. So I think you know. Good offense, you're still a little you know, w we're still early, but you'd still were kinda hoping to maybe get some couple more guys back from injury.
Yeah, and and I hate to take it back to that question I asked you way back when that we played in our open about the defense being better and you're like, can't be any worse, but it feels like with these injuries piling up that that is a distinct possibility. Am I am I wrong on that, Kevin? Am I overreacting to what's happened so far in pads?
Well, yeah, and I didn't even mention the biggest injury, of course, Kobe Bryant. I mean, that's your that's your star of free agency and he's gonna miss at least the first month of the season. And that guy was having a good camp. So the drop-off there between him and Cam Lewis, or maybe does Elijah Hicks fill in there if you want Cam Lewis playing nickel, if Kyler Gordon's not ready? Is Million Mohammed ready to make that jump this quickly? Uh you you have those questions. And you know, I I it's funny, guys. Uh the player that jumped out to me yesterday on the defensive line was Jordan Vandenberg, uh the rookie out of Georgia Tech. Now Now that's not somebody who is gonna be starting and who knows what his role will be.
Uh, but it was it it was he flashed. Um there is some real power um that that he's exhibiting on the field that was impressive. Uh you're hoping to continue to see that from other guys.
