Who is Mike Florio and what does he bring to the show?
Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now is a man who's got a massive brain. Mike Florio. He used to be a lawyer, then he decided to take his talents to the internet. NBC Sports. I'm sorry I'm late, I was talking to Robert Kraft. That isn't the time for an airing of grievances. Pro football talk. But I wouldn't listen to some of
those people out there. Especially guys like Mike Florian. With Rahimi and Grody on 1043, the score. We talk about it all with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Right here on Rahemian Grodi on 1043 the score. Thank you so much for joining us right smack dab in the middle of the week. We'll have Herb Howard on from Hallis Hall later. One o'clock, Jed Hoyer, but it is Florio of Time right now, the creator and editor in chief of Pro Football Talk. Hi, Mike. How are you, man?
Doing great. How are you today?
We are doing well, and our producer Ray Diaz just whispered in our collective ears that Jackson Dart, the quarterback for the Giants, is having knee surgery. Just when I thought, at least after the first game, certainly not the second, that oh, maybe the Giants are better than a lot of people thought. And now, welcome to the Giants, uh, John Harbaugh, I guess, right?
Well, it just underscores how fragile the quarterback position can be. And any starting quarterback is one snap away from having his season derailed, if not ended. And that's why you have to have a good plan in place. You have to have a backup that you can count on to be ready to go. At the drop of a hat. They have to be ready to step in every week. They have to be up to speed on the game plan. They have to know everything.
Why is the quarterback position considered the most fragile in the NFL?
So At any given moment, they can waltz out onto the field and go out and try to perform at an acceptable level. Jameis Winston failed in that regard on Monday night against the Rams, but now who have the full week to get ready for their week three game against the Titans. They have some winnable games coming up. And they have some questions to ask. Is it Jameis Winston for the rest of the year? Is there some other alternative out there who could compete with and or replace Jackson Dart? And then there are the bigger questions long term. Is Dart really the guy? I know it's only his second year, but when it's all lost due to an injury, it's a fair question to ask if you're John Harbaugh.
Yeah, there are a lot of tentacles to this, Mike, and when you gave that speech I didn't I'm not sure. Is it good for Jameis Winston? Do you think that he would be receptive to that? I feel like uh he's a veteran guy who we saw maybe not have the uh the best showing when he came out to fill in. Great in the media. You know, I just don't know if his um his best quarterback days are ahead of him this season.
As someone pointed out after the game, Jameis Winston looks like a guy who was serving as a correspondent for the World Cup this summer. So literally. But you know, they really like the energy he brings. We've seen good, we've seen bad. It's a roller coaster ride, it's entertaining. If there are gonna be any more Giants games in prime time, and I don't think there will be, I think the NFL's plan was Let's empty the tank with Giants games early in the event that they stink again. But I thought they were going to be much improved under John Harbaugh, and they still may be fine. This is a test, this is a challenge, it's ultimately an opportunity. For John Harbaugh to show what he can do. And he said yesterday it's not about one player, it's the entire team.
But the reality is the starting quarterback's the most important player on the team. And If you have a significant drop off from starter to backup, and usually the starter's the starter for a reason, the backup's the backup for a reason, you're gonna have to compensate with it somewhere else.
Well, also I wonder if this buys the combination of Harbaugh and Matt Nagy another chance. You know? I mean, depending on how bad they finish, does this does this buy you a possible next quarterback who they think might fit their scheme better? I know that this kind of is a a big reach when you consider how far past Jackson that that would be reaching, or does it at least buy them some time?
