Well, we knew that the A.J. Brown trade was going to happen. It was one of those things where it was so obvious, I started to think, is this not going to happen? But it did happen. It's amazing the Eagles got what they got for a guy that didn't want to be there. They were ready to move on. They had a cap number. this year that they could manage if they had to. I know people around the league who thought they had to move him this year because next year it would have gotten much, much worse as he earns more money. They use option bonuses that kick cap numbers out in the future years. It would have been a major problem if he had stayed one more year. To get a future first round pick and a fifth round pick is amazing for the Eagles.
The Patriots get a guy that they wanted. He wanted to be there. That all worked out, but that got superseded by the news that came seemingly out of nowhere, that the Browns, after insisting for years that they would never trade Miles Garrett, they trade Miles Garrett, proving yet again that we should never believe anything that anyone connected to any sports team ever says. Words are just words. Actions matter. And when they redid his contract back in March, to kick a $29.2 million option bonus from March 15 until September, creating a longer window, allowing his new team to be the one to pay him that money, that's when we recognized, hey, this door's open for him to be traded.
Mike, with the Myles Garrett thing specifically, it feels like both teams come out winners in this trade because Jared Verse is a beast and Myles Garrett, he's a win right now player. And obviously with Matthew Stafford, he's a I don't know how much longer he's going to play win right now player.
Well, that's right. The Rams are going all in. The Rams host the Super Bowl this year at SoFi Stadium, five years after they last hosted it and won it. And they're not far off. I also wonder whether or not the determination to get this deal done, part of it was influenced by the criticism of using the 13th overall pick, a bonus pick they picked up from the Falcons, on someone who isn't going to help them now. Ty Simpson is the future after Matthew Stafford, whenever that future may come. And there was a lot of, what are the Rams doing? And there was some within the division celebration that the Rams squandered the chance to get someone who would help them right now. I just wonder whether or not the Rams heard that, saw that, and thought, we're going to go get someone who will help us win right now.
