Sharing our takeaways from Ben Johnson's comments before Bears minicamp (Hour 2)
08 May 2026
Chapter 1: What insights did Ben Johnson share about rookie minicamp?
This hour is brought to you by Cars for Kids. This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. And believe it or not, there's football today. It's a lovely day when there's football. Bears rookie minicamp underway at Hallis Hall, scheduled for today and tomorrow. OTAs are next on May 27th through the 29th.
That, according to the schedule, it is subject to change, and I think that's important for people to know. This is a fluid thing, the offseason program.
It is.
And even when you think you know the schedule, sometimes you don't.
That's true. And that's why I am part of a text thread that is always constantly being updated for those of us on the beat.
Yeah. And for everybody, for all the criticisms that we have levied on the Bears, I'm glad to see how well informed they keep you guys when it comes to this.
They really do. No, they do a great job about that. And it's important. It's important to them. It's important to us. And it's going to be an important couple of days out at the hall starting to going on right now and tomorrow. And, you know, one of the things about it is, Layla, last year's draft class was very fruitful. for what the Bears did last year.
It was influential in the Cubs winning 11, excuse me, the Bears winning 11 games last year. I don't know if I can get four big contributors at this moment out of this rookie draft class. The only one that I can be exact with is Dylan Thienemann and that's it.
Well, I feel like there was a speculation that the Bears were essentially going to have to have the defensive draft class that they had out of the offense last year.

Chapter 2: Is rookie Logan Jones really competing for the starting center job?
Like, you're going to see some playing time, especially in how Dennis Allen creates a lot of his formations, you know, what we know about a 4-2-5 setup, essentially. So that's something that was... Yes.
I mean, nobody thought that he would contribute last year. I certainly didn't. And he was one of the most important parts of the secondaries.
So I don't blame anybody for wanting to know what you're going to get out of any member of the secondary on the team. But I just feel like the Bears are still not in a place yet where they can make a lot of these really big gambles on players thinking they may have found a diamond in the rough or reinvented a wheel.
I think you need some more basic wheels and some more essential stones rather than a diamond in the rough. Sometimes you've got to go with what you think is obvious rather than who you may have hope in.
Right. Well, let's look at this year's fifth-round rookie, Keyshawn Elliott, the linebacker out of ASU, who I believe it was Dane Brugler who said that this was highway robbery. for the Bears to have gotten Keyshawn Elliott, the linebacker, where they got him.
So he's an intriguing prospect who, like so many of these rookies, you look at him and say, I don't see a spot for you right now, but certainly as the season goes on and certainly next year when you look at the linebacker's room with TJ Edwards, you don't know exactly what you're going to get out of him.
You don't know when he's coming back.
You don't. You wrote, I mean, Devin Bush, we are sure about. DeMarco Jackson, we are sure about in terms of he will be there. And Jack Sanborn, of course, we are all sure about him.
We know what we're getting out of you, Jack Sanborn.

Chapter 3: How will the Bears utilize rookie tight end Sam Roush?
a lot of opinions from guys we trust that Muhammad also was one of those. So let's listen to what Ben Johnson had to say about Al Harris and Malik Muhammad and that relationship that can flourish.
I think for all of our defensive backs, it's a, it's one of the better situations that you could ask for. Just the, I think the world of Al, um, we were very fortunate to get him back and, uh, he's a great teacher. Um, I think he's very systematic about the process with which we want to go about our business.
And so because of that, I think he's got some really good building blocks for young players if they trust him and they buy into his way of coaching that they're going to have success. His track record says that. And so I think Malik is a very sharp young man, and he's going to be able to embrace that coaching style with open arms.
Encouraging, no?
Yeah, absolutely. Boy, I'm curious to hear from Dennis Allen, too, just on all, as you said, this was supposed to be the defensive draft this year, and you got it at the end of the draft, obviously four, five, and six. But it's going to be interesting. I mean, Malik Muhammad, a two-and-a-half-year starter at Texas, 6'182".
Like I've been saying it all offseason, the Bears have an issue with Tyreek Stevenson. I'm not saying they hate Tyreek Stevenson and don't value him at all, but they stopped trusting him at the end of the season in terms of the snaps that they were allowing for him.
You could see it in how they utilized him during games. Yeah. And what's frustrating is I feel like when he was on the field in the later games of the season and into the playoffs, he did make a difference. But they're not long for him. It certainly seems that way.
At the very least, they are not convinced that Tyreek Stevenson is the guy that you just pencil in as the cornerback opposite of Jalen Johnson. So now you're going to get... That does open the door for Malik Muhammad. That opens the door again for... for Smitty, for Terrell Smith to show his, to see if he's got a shot at potentially getting back into the mix and getting snaps out there.
But it is interesting, the secondary.

Chapter 4: What is the status of Zay Frazier on the Bears roster?
Oh, yeah, right, right. I mean, and there's Ben Johnson answering the question. Good job, Weedsy. Time will tell. The ball is in his court. And it's what I wanted to know. I said it on the podcast. Like, if I'm out there today and I'm going to probably go out to the rookie minicamp tomorrow and I'll ask this question throughout the offseason if I have the opportunity.
Will Logan Jones get an opportunity in training camp with the ones to actually compete for the job? And I guess we'll actually see it play out in front of us.
I feel like that's a big storyline, not only the whole offseason, but how this stretches into training camp, who's going to be with who. It's similar to how we had to watch left tackle last year. This is going to evolve.
Where is the real competition? Is Logan Jones actually competing for a spot? Is Malik Muhammad, who we just talked about, the cornerback out of Texas, is he actually competing for, dare I say it, a starting spot? I mean, hell, Tyreek Stevenson competed for a starting spot his rookie year. He was a second-round pick. Is Sam Roush just plug-and-play?
Durham Smythe, right away, no problems, no issues. It's just so interesting to think about the potential roles that these guys will play, and each of them has a tiny roadblock in front of them, unlike last year where you had four real contributors.
Yeah, the only one who doesn't have that roadblock is Dylan Thienemann.
Yes, that's it. He's the only one. And I said it yesterday too, Layla. He's the only exact rookie in the draft class this year where you have a pretty damn good idea that he's going to start 17 games this year.
I have confidently said I did not know who was starting opposite Kobe Bryant at safety for the Bears. And then after day one of the draft and pick 25, I now have a... Strong to quite strong to basically the idea. Yes. 99.5% confidence level. That's it, though. And I know who's starting at safety for the Bears.
But there's nobody else. Is there anybody else in this Bears draft class where you're like, I know where they're going to be by the end of this season?

Chapter 5: How does the Bears' defensive needs compare to last year's draft class?
I just figured he's a guy that Ben Johnson wanted to utilize. But at that point, you knew there was position redundancy. So how was it going to get settled? The bigger one for me was I assumed, based on where they picked Ozzie Trapillo, that he was going to be starting almost immediately on the line.
Yeah.
And then he didn't, and then he did, and now he's injured, and I hope he can still come back and play at an expected level.
I mean, that is the idea, I can tell you that, that yes, that he will, Trapillo assuming everything goes well in his rehab, but they do plan to have him as their left tackle.
It's a pillow.
Thank you, Emma.
That's such a big if, though. That's the hard part about it. You can't criticize him for something that has taken so many NFL players down and taken so much time to recover from. I am not going to have this huge expectation.
I'm just hoping that that's because he's young, and I'm hoping that that helps him heal quickly and be able to get back out there and be reasonable with what we expect to see out of him on the field.
Right. And it's why they, from what I understand, the Bears never were considering, even though we all surmise that they might be considering a left tackle in the draft. I don't think that was ever part of, unless some spectacular thing happened where the top guy fell to them, which it didn't.

Chapter 6: What role will Malik Muhammad play in the Bears' defense?
Sam Rauch did his thing to get drafted where he was and to impress the Bears. So Ben Johnson, why don't you share me your vision? How will ye?
There were a number of really good players coming out this year, and we were fortunate to get one that we feel really highly about that can contribute run game, pass pro, catching down the field. We feel like we got one of the more complete tight ends that this draft had to offer, but
In regards to big picture and just where the league is going, obviously teams have had success with the two tight end, three tight end sets. Things kind of always go full circle, it seems like. And it wasn't that long ago that three receiver sets were kind of the norm, and now it seems to be transition on over a little bit more. But I think the more you can –
Look to attack the defense, whether it's you want to give them a base defense or you feel comfortable competing against them when they're in their sub defenses. It's just the flexibility that tight ends give you. I think it adds a dimension to your offense.
It almost feels like the Sam Rauch and Zavion Thomas picks were exclusive Ben Johnson. They're like, okay, we're giving you two. We're giving you two picks. Go get your tight end because you are obsessed with tight ends and justifiably so. And then you want a guy with a 4-2-8 who can return kicks and be a gadget guy in Zavion Thomas.
Yeah, I feel like this is like the guy on a movie or a TV show. They cut to the genius who's just working away in some lab. And then he's like, I need these things for my vision to come into place. Like, I must have this explosive or this computer or this piece of software, like an Ocean's Eleven almost type of deal. And that's Ben Johnson, except he's the head coach.
And so maybe Ryan Pulse has to say, OK, I know Ben needs this in the plot that is the Bears. I do appreciate the fact that Ben Johnson also took us behind the scenes a little bit and shared how he got to this point with Sam Roush.
He was one of the guys we identified well before the draft that... He's a player that we really liked. And, you know, a quick story about him. You know, the guys do a great job trying to recruit some of these guys we think might fall through the cracks and go undrafted. And, you know, I actually called him before the draft and let him know that we had a vision for him.
And when you take a tight end in the third round, you're kind of like, oh, shoot. That might take us away from Hayden coming here. And yet, he didn't bat an eye. This is where he wanted to be. And to me, that speaks volumes about how he's wired. And it has something to do with how he came to walk on at Iowa and earn him playing time and going through the long, hard road. I really appreciate that.

Chapter 7: Can Logan Jones start from game one of the season?
Oh, boy. Oh, yeah.
Bears. There's a bears. If he's close enough to the priest, he's like, did I just hear a bears? Bears. Bears.
No, actually, I do go to church with my parents.
We believe in the Lord, the giver of life. All that is seen and unseen bears.
One of the priests there does.
I know I just abbreviated it. It's for the bit.
One of the priests does know me, and he always wants to talk bears. So I think he understands that if my mind is elsewhere during the 45 to hour long mass, I think he understands I'm thinking about the bears.
Also, friendly shout out to Father Greg Sackowitz over at the cathedral, who's a noted Sox fan. Noted. I hope he's having a good time right now watching the Sox. So apparently the problem was eventually fixed through a friend of the bank's president. Hey, I moved. Can I get help with my address? It's One Pope Drive. Like what? Like, what's the address?
If Bob was to walk into the bank, would he be in the full Pope regale, do you think? Like, doing the whole thing? Does the hat fit in the doorway?
