Fine, Layla. All is well, and that road trip ended spectacularly well for the Sox because when you lose the first two in a series, the only thing you have left is a sweep if it's a poor gamer, and that's what the Sox were able to do. So I think they're pretty happy having a winning road trip, especially with all the trials and travails on the road this year.
No kidding. And we were just talking about that, Steve. It looked like the goal, even before the series started against Cleveland, was that four-game split. Like you talked about, two and two would make it feel like a success. And they were able to do that in a bunch of different ways. Saturday's game was impressive. I feel like the Sox outlasted some of the situations that happened in the game yesterday.
How has Miguel Vargas transformed this season?
What do you make of those two games that you saw for them to take the split here?
Well, I think it's a testament to the toughness of this young team. And make no mistake, being a young team, they're going to make all kinds of mistakes. The problem is the road accentuates those mistakes. So as dominant as the Sox have been at home, that's how difficult it's been on the road. And when you digest both of those games, you'll realize that the Sox made a great many mistakes in both of those games but played over it and won the game. So that's a step in the right direction. Winning on the road is something that you have to acquire if you plan on going deep into the playoffs.
We are 89 games deep, Steve. That means we got a lot more still to play, but it feels like we're getting a sense of where the White Sox are in the pantheon of things, not only in the division, but also the American League. Do you feel like things are starting to settle in where you feel like you know who teams are, specifically, obviously, the Guardians, who they've won four out of the first seven meetings against, but even the teams behind them, with the Twins only being four out, with the Tigers having the best record in the American League since June 1st?
Well, if you're saying that it's an evenly matched division, I will agree with you. It certainly is one of those. And the culture that Will and his staff laid down in spring training with this young bunch of players is really holding them well at this point because they do hustle each and every play.
What is the significance of the White Sox's recent road trip?
That being said, they also make some mistakes. And you're giving teams four and sometimes five outs in an inning. Odds are overwhelming they're going to score. The Guardians are without Ramirez, who game after game is the star of that team, and we're without Moune. So it was kind of a toss-up in that series, as evidenced by the closeness of the series. I mean, you've got most of the games in the series being one-run games, except for that blowout where the Sox won by two runs.
Steve, Miguel Vargas obviously named an all-star. The guy had a three-run homer on Friday on a 10-pitch at bat. The year, the revelation that has been Vargas this year, is this just a lesson in patience for young players at this level of baseball?
