Transition: It's hard for Holmes to be excited about White Sox's moves
21 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What are the initial thoughts on the White Sox's recent moves?
I'm hoping that it ticks him off and maybe he'll play better angry. Check USA Today tomorrow, him and my mom will be going at it in the nursing home.
On the court. On the court. You took off the court? In Appleton. It's an important note.
Ray Diaz, new sneaky sneakerson. Thanks to Ray. Thanks to Tyler Biederbaugh. Sean Sears for helping out. Connor O'Donnell. Jacob Stutz. Max Curtis. Everybody who hung out with us on all of the platforms. The Twitch mob, YouTube, the text line. We had some interesting texts today. Danny Perkins, thanks for him to join. Thanks to him for joining us. Thanks to Joe DiMeo, too, from SNY.
Mark Grody for helping out as well from the hall. This was one of those days where we had a lot of hands on deck.
A lot of hands on deck. A lot of people learned a lot of things, but not quite enough. That's how I like to look at it, Layla, because I'm still wondering, hey, DJ, yo, that's my DJ. What happened on that play for you? And I guess the world will never know. It's like a Tootsie Roll pop. How many looks does it take to get to the center?
That was a Lil' Kim song, as I recall.
It sure was. Different types of...
Drew Hilsinger.
Cisco.

Chapter 2: How do the hosts feel about the White Sox's roster construction?
Cynthia Erivo did a breakdown of the end of the thong song.
She did.
Because she was like, why? It's amazing. She's correct on that, too. She's like, why are there key changes at the end of this thing? It's unnecessary is what she said.
But wasn't that also a Drew Hill thing, too? Like, wouldn't Cisco just go off in random Drew Hill songs?
And that's why he became a solo artist. And that's also why people for a period of time thought that his name was Drew Hill.
Cynthia Erivo is a crazy, talented, multifaceted performer who, like, she was on that show The Outsider on HBO with Jason Bateman, which was a really good, like, dark...
um short run series with no accent i think that's the first time i saw her she also used to be like she's wavy now but she used to be like yes ripped she she's ripped and and like and totally americanized and then i'm like what you talk like that huh i don't know it's always wild like uh i was thinking of christian bale like his i was like wait you don't talk american What?
That's just a thing you do? Ben Johnson talks American.
Am I right?

Chapter 3: What are the implications of the White Sox's spending strategy?
That matters. But this idea of like, well, now they better spend that $20 million or I'll be mad. I don't give a crap about that.
I mean, they also spent money on Munitaka Murakami.
Which is a great investment. So spend money on a great investment. Don't just throw $15 million to the next Michael Taylor. I don't care. I hear you on that. It's Michael A. Taylor to you.
I was very much like, hey, if you have to pay $10 million of his contract and get better prospects, I'm all aboard that. That matters. And I don't think they did that and they should be ripped for that. Okay, so I don't know what was available to them.
I don't know what other things, but yes, if there were things available where they could have put in $10 million, I agree with you, absolutely speaks.
But I will say this, the $20 million or $22 million, however you want to look at it, that we're talking about, the White Sox have not spent, if they put it into like, I don't know, having some starting pitching so the games are watchable, I'm okay with that. Can we get through 162 games where the games are entertaining?
And I thought for a large portion of last season, the games were at least... I don't particularly care if the games are watchable for you.
Why? I watch them. Well, I don't care, but that's not what... They shouldn't be worried about if their games are watchable. They should be worried about trying to build the next great team, whenever that's going to be.
Building the next great team, you do have to have a culture of somewhat getting better as a team.

Chapter 4: How do the hosts perceive the White Sox's future performance?
If that trade was available with Cincy any time over the last couple years with you eating 15 of this 20 million and getting legit prospects, then shame on you for not doing it.
I completely agree with that. The legit prospects is the... That's the rub here. Because... And it turned into me for them a one or zero. Can we get something in exchange for Luis Roberts contract or not? And I felt like if the goal was simply one or zero, then you accomplished one. But at some point you have to quantify what that one is going to be.
Now, Luis Angel Acuna, at age 23, is a legit player who can do something for you, but probably at the bottom of a good roster. Probably not at the top of a roster on the come. And maybe they'll give him a chance to do so. He can play the outfield and has been doing it in winter ball this offseason. But it's like, he's an extra depth piece.
Well, that's the problem. When I first saw the trade, I was like, oh, so this guy is going to be... given more playing time on the White Sox, but on a good team, he's probably just going to be right back into that utility role he was in with the Mets.
Are we out of the phase of guys who remind Chris Getz of Chris Getz yet, or no?
Oh, is this like the Ryan Poles reminds me of Ryan Poles guys?
Those same concept? I would think that they think that it's pedigree because of the last name. So that kind of takes you out of the Chris Getz territory.
Somewhere in here is a tattoos joke.
But, but like, okay. Like, so you, you, so you paid $20 million for a utility player.

Chapter 5: What are the concerns regarding player development in the White Sox organization?
And I might feel differently if... If there's a new owner? Well, yeah. It's coming. Win. Get in line and win. That's a long wait. I got good years off my life. Maybe not. Maybe not, because he's in charge in some ways and slowly getting more in charge, and you never know when Jerry's going to feel ill enough to help it go the final way.
I feel like post-work stoppage, because I can go ahead and say that now after what I read yesterday.
There's that part.
Yeah, a lot of truths are going to be told. Is there going to be a salary floor? Is there going to be a salary cap? And if that happens, I think that could be the game changer, but it's almost a forced game changer. It's not like they went out and did something remarkable. It's just now they have to be in the pool of teams.
To your point, the White Sox have unfortunately proven themselves, under current ownership, to be one of those teams that needs the forced game changer. They need it. It's too bad. It's a sad thing. They shouldn't be one of those teams.
They shouldn't be there with the Pirates.
Correct. Correct. Yes. But they are. But in 10 years, we'll hopefully be talking about this as the way things used to be versus... But maybe not.
You'll be talking about it. I'll be in a cafe in Montreal, rooting for the Expos. That sounds lovely.
They did offer Kyle Tucker a lot of poutine, they said.

Chapter 6: How does ownership impact the White Sox's decision-making?
Very experimental.
A lot of Celine Dion in that catalog. Yeah, they had a theremin on stage. Theremin. Woo! They did. Making a lot of cool sounds.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard has one of those, don't they? Why do I know this? I hate my brain.
Because you worked with Studs for forever and that's the only concert he goes to.
It is a concert that Studs goes to. I also randomly heard an air check by them one day because they were playing at Northerly Island or something.
Alright, nobody asked. Here are my top two theremin songs. Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys.
There's one in there?
Come on, come on, come on. Yeah, that was definitely the different vibrations. A whole lot of love by Led Zeppelin. That's a badass. That's a theremin on the breakdown. A whole lot of love.
Well, I did not know either of these things.

Chapter 7: What are the discussions around key player trades and acquisitions?
No, I'm sorry.
Same season. But Jim Deshaies lobbied several years ago. He lobbied and set up a campaign to be in the one-vote club. And someone gave him that honor. Yes.
But not more than one person, because that would have messed it up.
So we will discuss Hall of Fame voting. Maybe a touch of Cubs, but maybe not. Maybe not. Maybe not. We'll see where this takes us. But Jim is a delightful man, and he's in the one-vote club. So we'll talk to him.
So that's happening at 425. And as Spieg said, we're going to have Mark Grody on for Bears at Two Words. That's going to be at 5 o'clock. When we come back... Waiting on Godot or waiting on polls today here trying to figure out if we have always felt like there's been a changing of the guard. Was that defined today by who talked and when? So we'll discuss a little bit of that.
We'll go through both of the press conferences. There's some interesting stuff. Speaks' favorite thing of relitigating the DJ Moore thing, and now it's gone national.
Oh, it really has. It's too bad. Finally. Stephen A. and Jim Boyd. Finally, we know how Stephen A. feels about it. Thank God.
Sounds like he got influenced by the McVeigh tree. That's what happened here.
It would very much seem like he might know a LeFleur or two.

Chapter 8: What are the final thoughts on the White Sox's direction and fan expectations?
Still Wint. Still Wint.
Future trippin'.
I like that.
So we will get into all of that, including what Ben had to say about the way this season ended in his quarterback. Tanny's got an open for you. It's next here on The Score.
