What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Bears fans, this is Take the North. What's the reason, Doc? It's here. With your hosts. All these guys. Dan Wiederer and Mark Grody.
We're going to take the North and never give it back. Hello again, everybody, and welcome into the Take the North podcast, along with Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. I am Mark Grody of 104.3 The Score. We are coming at you, both of us from Hallas Hall. We are both on different levels of the atrium. Dan, I'm not stuck in my usual booth. I am out in the open, kind of invading your territory. So thank you for making the adjustment. But look at us, man.
I was going to say, it is great to see you out in the open, but it did come at the expense of me because I was ready to set up just across from where you are right now in the midway by the whole passion sign over there. And you're like, well, this isn't going to work. So now I'm downstairs in the, I don't know, I guess you'd call it the auditorium type setting in the PNC Center. And it feels about 22 degrees cooler down here. So I'm getting a little bit cold, but ready to rock through a first day of practice episode here.
Well, it's funny that you mentioned that feeling a little bit chilly. Oh, that's our guy, our guy Dan Barilli, ladies and gentlemen. There he is from the Chicago Bears. What's up, buddy? I know this guy loves the Take the North podcast. Loyalist. Absolutely. No, I am wearing, I had to go to the long sleeve t-shirt here. As you can see, I'm wearing a Notre Dame long sleeve tee because it got a little bit chilly. It's the juxtaposition of the being out in the heat for the practice today and then coming inside. You never know. I'm at that age, Dan, like where you go to like a movie theater or you never know how cool it's going to be inside a place. So I am always prepared with long sleeve apparel in my summer life.
Well, our YouTube audience will see that I don't have long-sleeve apparel, and they'll see that I'm a little cold.
You are standing in front of the greatest logo in sports because it's just the bear. It's just the mean, nasty Chicago bear. There it is. Right there. There it is. There it is. I don't know what I'm in front of here.
It's the same logo.
The exact same logo is what you're standing in front of.
Yeah.
Isn't that nice? Isn't that nice? But today, yes, was the first official Bears training camp practice. And I would call it just, it was nice and easy, I suppose you could say, Dan. A short practice relative to maybe what they'll be doing as time goes on, I suppose a ramp-up practice, about an hour and 15 minutes. So as we say, and a lot of people say, and some people lament, it ain't like it used to be in terms of how hard they go on these guys. Today felt easy, I think, in terms of what we were seeing out there on the field and observing.
Right. These ain't the old days, indeed. And look, like when the air horn blew before 10 a.m., I think it was 9.58 when the air horn blew today, you realize, oh, this was a quick ramp up period. And that really training camp doesn't formally begin until next week. sort of an extension of otas with what they're able to do and what they are actually doing and so we're gonna have to wait they'll get the pads on on monday but even that comes with some limitations as they ramp up to the pads period and so it'll be a little bit before we've got much of substance to dissect caleb williams for example today uh through it took 15 snaps and either 11 on 11 or 7 on 7 that includes handoffs so who Not a high volume of things to kind of dissect.
And anybody that's out there waiting for the first burst of Caleb Williams viral highlights to come through the social media pipeline, you're going to have to wait another day or two because there really wasn't much to talk about today.
No, there wasn't. They did do, I guess, maybe the most active that Caleb Williams was. And this is just the way it is. And seven on seven was in seven on seven. And with my eyes, Dan, you know, this is I love this because you and I can literally compare notes here from what we observed.
