What it means moving forward for Toronto Maple Leaf fans, short and long term. Also... A big mention to a 7 p.m. Eastern across all platforms.
What's tonight?
The NHL Draft Lottery.
It's the Leafs Stanley Cup Final tonight. I'm actually way too excited about it.
Nick Kiprios, Justin Bourne, Sammy McKee, Jake the Snake Schultz, Derek Brandeo. Next two hours with you. Sammy.
Yeah, I know, Mike. It was meant to be.
Are you done for today? We actually insisted upon that. All right. Can they not just turn it on?
That I don't know the answer to. They can't.

Chapter 2: What are the implications of keeping or losing the Leafs' draft pick?
Sammy, this is the best thing that's ever happened to you.
Sammy, wheel over here, Sammy, and we'll share the mic. Come on.
We're being told you need to change microphones. I don't know what that means. Is there spare ones around?
Yeah, I got one right here. Kipper's got a bonus mic. What's that mean? I'm like Mr. Dress-Up. I just go to the trickle trunk. No? Probably. A little too old for you guys.
I think we're going to do the show. Then we're just going to cut Sammy out. We'll break early and we'll cut him off. What were we talking about? The draft. The draft. Okay. So, yeah, if anyone behind them wins the lottery, it would bump them to sixth, and therefore they would give the pick to Boston.
Yeah. I think this is a really pivotal moment for Chayka and Mats. Yeah. I do. I think... I almost want to compare it to Brendan Shanahan and the first overall pick that the lottery enabled them. Of course, the odds were with them, but there were still no guarantees.
But it was that moment in the studio, which I happened to be a part of, that the world changed for Toronto Maple Leaf fans with that first overall pick. And then there was just a tremendous amount of... upside vibe, whatever you want to call it, this wave of this is heading in the right direction and we've got so much to look forward to.
I don't believe a top five pick can do that, but it will go a long way for Chayka and Mats to even have that. We're a bit of a good luck charm.
Yeah. Oh, totally. Totally. I do think that that would help them. I think if you... If you look at Chayka's history, he's been very aggressive at the draft. He's made a lot of moves at the draft. And to hand him a chip like this, let's say a second overall pick falls to the Toronto Maple Leafs or something like that.

Chapter 3: How does Craig Berube's coaching status affect the Leafs' future?
So I'm curious to see how quickly they would get aggressive and
if because like were they trying to make playoffs next year you asked him expressly right let actually yeah i'm not sure if i got a lot of clear decisive answers out of him and he does have a way of kind of answering but not really answering it's very lawyerly it's very it's good it's
It's not promising. He wanted to not promise anything.
I don't necessarily blame him on that either.
You get in trouble when you pin yourself down to things, you know, and you say, here's what's going to happen.
I think he's... I think he left himself open to if it means that we're competing, we're competing, and if we're not, then that's okay too, and we'll just march on forward without, to your point, any promises.
You think about how hard a day was for him yesterday. Obviously, the press conference was not good with some of the questions that were asked. He managed to, when the dust settled, get through the day without promising anything. Like, they might rebuild, they might retool, they might keep Matthews, they might not. We'll get into that. You know, they might do a lot of things.
They might keep the coach, they might not.
I do know that today was a fairly busy day, I think, for them. They had a Zoom call with a lot of their staff.

Chapter 4: What is Auston Matthews' mindset heading into the next season?
He's won a Stanley Cup in the past seven years. You're going to sit there and it's going to go great. It's going to go great. And so how do you then leave that meeting and go, hey, that meeting we had three days ago, decided I don't like you. I just, I don't, I can't see that happening. So I can see to your point how you would end up.
But okay, this is going to bridge to the other part of this is you asked him yesterday about Austin Matthews.
Yes.
And is he a part of the solution? Do you have to sell him? And we all agreed that sell is maybe not the right word, but show him that this is viable. Yeah, yeah. I don't know where the captain falls on the coach and if that's relevant, but also, yeah, that conversation is the next step.
And we flat out asked him if he felt like he was on the clock with Austin. Yeah. Sammy, do we have that, his response?
Brandeo, can you play Chica on Matthews? His response to Kipper yesterday? I believe Sammy put it in pre-show as a late addition.
I don't know if you had a chance to hear Leon Dreisaitl talk about the Edmonton Oilers situation. Not that you have anything to do with that.
I talked to Craig last night. And look, he's a guy that's a respected leader for over decades.
Oh, sorry. The Austin Matthews. Reference to being on the clock.

Chapter 5: How does the trade between Boston and Toronto impact the Leafs?
Like, physically?
I mean, I presume it's not physically, right? He's supposed to be at full health come the season.
All right.
Right? So we're told.
Mentally, emotionally?
Yeah, I mean, it's kind of... To me, all these guys, he's got a contract. He's a Toronto Maple Leaf. Like, until... He has shown no inclination to come out and say, I want to be traded. By all indications, he has ties with the men who have been hired here. I think the implication is just the general one that superstars are making, which is I want to see that the team's getting better.
I want to see that we have a chance that we're going in the right direction and all those things. And I don't think that's new. Like they're going to try to add good players this summer. Hopefully they get a top pick. Hopefully they can get aggressive.
Yeah, when I kind of hear stuff like this, and listen, I've broken my share of news over my career, and I get a lot of it, you know, on how this kind of works sometimes. And Chris Johnson's a guy I respect. I've worked with him here. He's tied in. He's got sources for sure. My first thought is, where's this coming from? Right. And I don't know. I mean, I'm, I'm speculating.
I'm guesstimating here.

Chapter 6: What insights does Gord Stellick provide about the Leafs' management?
Nope. How is now this team going to get back into a position to, to your point, Austin is if you want to put pressure on them and you want them to get better, you got to also be realistic on the cards that are being held right now on your new general manager or, or Matt's as a senior advisor, a Keith Pelley, the ownership, like the,
How can they get you to the place where you're going to be happy in a really relatively short period of time? And the answer is just calm your jets down a little bit. This may take a little while.
Yeah. I think that's a realistic piece of this conversation that has to happen is, is Matthews willing to, I'm not saying wait five years in a rebuild, but are you willing to wait two? Are you willing to wait three? Like, are you willing to be a part of, hey, you know, we had to make a couple moves to acquire assets. We had to do a couple things to get to the point.
Because I also think the idea of outright rebuilding when you don't have two, your next three first is not super appealing and not even a great time to try. I don't know. I wonder if there is a world where, you know, they get a pick tonight and all of a sudden it's, okay, we're going to try to get aggressive. Maybe we'll flip that for a player. I don't know.
I wonder how aggressive tonight makes them or not and how that affects Matthews. Big lottery balls.
Okay, the flip side of it is that, to your point, he's made up his mind. He wants out.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I mean, that's one of the possibilities.
Which, quite frankly, would be really shocking to me.
It would be.

Chapter 7: What are the potential outcomes of the upcoming NHL Draft?
But you know this town, and we've watched it with Vancouver.
Yeah, if I'm PR related, I'm like, hey, could you just come out and say, hey, you're down for next year? Could we get that on the record? That would be really helpful. I think people would feel a little better.
And this is where hopefully a guy like Matz can come in too and be that kind of buffer between Chica and Austin. And, you know, that's where you're hopefully really invested in Matz to come in and work on that.
Yeah.
That relationship.
We're in the trust tree here. It's just you and me.
Just me and you, man. We lost Sammy.
We did. We did. You know, I kind of thought Matz was going to be, I don't know, more involved. Not that he's, like, I just, you know, I asked him lots of questions yesterday. I thought you asked a lot of Chayka, and I was like, all right, let's bring Matz into this conversation. And Matz was kind of like, Yeah, you know, I'll be involved.
I'll give my input where I think it can help and I'll be a part of it. At no point did I feel he was like, yeah, I'm a part of the business leadership team. I'm going to talk to the sponsors and whatever. Or yes, I'm going to be in the X's and O's. We're going to work on the penalty kill. You know, like he's just kind of like, I'm at, I'm here. I'm going to, what do you want to know?

Chapter 8: How can the Leafs turn their fortunes around next season?
I've watched that guy for two months. Don't make that trade. Hmm. then it holds a lot more stock. And Matt's would be a lot more comfortable sharing that with John. But he ain't throwing out yes or no until he's sure about it.
Well, what's crazy about that is that You got the captain who is implying, as we believe it, we don't know, but implying that he wants things to happen, right? Like, we want to see action here. So, Matz, whether he knows it or not, is probably going to be faced with a conversation between now and trade deadline that looks like what we're talking about. Like, hey, I want to move...
We all want what you want, Austin, to bring a championship here and to feel great and be proud. Like, we're on the same page.
Everyone is striving in that direction.
But Mats can also look at him and say, be a pro about this. You got two years left. No one's saying that you got to tip all your secrets out on your intentions. But... We got some time here. Have a great summer. Work your ass off. And come ready to lead this team. And that could be the gist of the whole conversation. No more, no less.
And we're not looking for a huge long-term commitment out of you. We just need to know that we're on the same page here. And even if we're not, just be a pro.
Yeah, I think that's fine, and I think Matthews also bears some responsibility to come back and have a better year, right? Get above a point per game again and shoot it in the net a bunch, and those are parts of the things that can turn this around. The coach thing will be interesting.
The other thing, too, is, you know, and we talked about this the other day, that star players, they get preferential treatment when it comes to maybe some feedback, whatever that means to whatever organization, right? And there's a sense that certain guys want certain things. But for Austin, too, he's got to hold himself accountable. Two off-seasons, yes, injuries played a part.
He's got to be better. Yeah. He's got to be better. And I hope somebody has a conversation with him on that part too. You can sit there and checklist all you want, but here's what we want out of you.
