What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This podcast was produced by ORFM Dunedin with support from New Zealand On Air. Top tips for avoiding the tip. Let's reduce, reuse and recycle together. Our guests and listeners share their top tips for minimising waste.
So this week we have Lincoln Coe, who's a landfill engineer from the Waste and Environmental Solutions Division of Dunedin City Council. Lincoln, what's your top tip?
My top tip has to be have a think really hard about
What is Lincoln Coe’s top tip for thinking about what you buy and where it ends up?
about what you're buying and after you've bought it, where it goes. And if you have got the time, do that thinking because if you can do the thinking when you put it in the red bin or the green bin or the yellow bin, whether you bring it to us at the landfill, that'll make our job easier and ultimately you'll be doing your bit.
Yes, yeah. I find it fascinating sometimes when I look at something. What was it recently? It was something like a drink packaging. And I just had this thought that all those, I don't know, Kinder Eggs, were they a thing here? You know those yellow capsules? They are all in a hole somewhere. Every single one of them is in a hole somewhere, unless somebody burns some. I don't want that.
And yet we're still making the equivalent of those Kinder Eggs. And look, if you don't need to buy something, don't buy it.
Why are everyday items like drink packaging and Kinder‑Egg‑style capsules a problem for landfills?
Find a different solution. And then if you do, then just take that moment to have a think about where will it end up. Rethink your waste. Rethink your waste. Yes.
Absolutely. Yeah, and so if you've got any examples of anything where you picked something up and you went, hang on, no, I can do better than this.
I'm not sure that I have... You probably get more awareness of this than most of us. So I don't know. I don't know whether I ended up in this job by accident or not, but I have always just lived a really frugal kind of life, and I don't buy stuff that I don't need, and I'm a fix-it kind of person as well. So, yeah, that doesn't – oh, no, sorry. Here you go. I can't stand up in the studio, but I am wearing some pants that need a –
How can re‑thinking purchases and fixing items reduce waste sent to the landfill?
some stitching on the back to make them go another round. So tomorrow or the next day I'll take these pants to the clothing alterations place to get a patch put on the back of my pants. So there you go. There you go.
Fantastic example.
