EP 504: MailPlaneApp 10,000+ Customers With BetterGmail with CEO Lars Steiger
10 Dec 2016
Chapter 1: What is MailPlaneApp and how did it start?
This is The Top, where I interview entrepreneurs who are number one or number two in their industry in terms of revenue or customer base. You'll learn how much revenue they're making, what their marketing funnel looks like, and how many customers they have. I'm now at $20,000 per top. Five and six million. He is hell-bent on global domination.
Chapter 2: What is the business model of MailPlaneApp?
We just broke our 100,000-unit soul mark. And I'm your host, Nathan Latka. Okay, Top Tribe, this week's winner of the $100 is Rich Jones. Okay, Rich Jones, he is stuck in corporate. He wants to break free.
Chapter 3: How does Lars Steiger manage MailPlaneApp alone?
He's binging on the show. For your chance to win 100 bucks every Monday morning, simply subscribe to the podcast right now on iTunes and then text the word Nathan to 33444 to prove that you did it. Many people ask me how I used email to sell my first company, Heyo, and it's simple.
You want to do things like open tracking so that you know when a potential buyer actually opens your email or potential new customer. You also want to set reminders so you can quickly know when to follow up with somebody if they haven't replied to you or use things like auto follow-up sequences.
Chapter 4: What marketing strategies does MailPlaneApp use to attract customers?
You can do all of this with a company called thetopinbox.com. In fact, I liked it so much, I bought the whole business. Go try it for free at thetopinbox.com right now. Nathan Lackey here. This is episode 504.
Chapter 5: How many customers does MailPlaneApp currently serve?
Coming up tomorrow morning, you'll learn from Johnny, who runs Quill.co. He prepays contractors and freelancers money that they've signed up to earn, right? And they've been worth $10 million in 2016.
folks good morning nathan latke here our guest today is lars steiger and i found him because i was researching some companies in kind of the gmail space and came across his application mail plane at mailplaneapp.com that's we're going to focus on today lars are you ready to take us to the top sure okay so tell us first what does mail plane app do
Mailplane is a kind of a convenience product.
Chapter 6: Why would Lars never sell MailPlaneApp?
In 2007, when we started, it was called a site-specific browser. So I don't know if this term is still around, but it runs Gmail in a separate application. So you don't have to run it next to your websites while browsing.
And what is the... So you said you founded it in 2007. Lars, it's a big decision to start a company.
Chapter 7: What are Lars' thoughts on business growth and customer satisfaction?
Why did you start it?
Actually, it wasn't me. It was Ruben who started it, a good friend of mine. And I joined him in 2007. And actually, he started it because he just needed that kind of product for himself.
Chapter 8: What advice does Lars have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
And so he got into it somehow. And yeah, it turned out as a business.
Are you a co-founder now? Do you have equity?
I have equity. Actually, I'm the one who runs the business. Ruben joined Evernote in 2012, and I took over. And he's still kind of advising me, but he's not actually working on it anymore.
And how many, I guess, what do you measure, users or customers? What's more important to you? Customs, of course. Okay, so you launched in 2007. Currently, how many customers are you working with?
Actually, we don't disclose those numbers. We don't believe in disclosing them.
Give us a sense just of size. Range is fine to stay vague. It's in the 10,000s. Okay, in the 10,000s. And what about users? How many total users do you guys have?
Do you mean website visitors?
I should have asked this first. Do you have a free option or is it only paid?
It's only paid. Actually, you can use it 15 days for free. And then you can decide if you want to use it, if you continue to want to use it, or if you want to stop using it. But you can't use it for free.
