SaaS Interviews with CEOs, Startups, Founders
He Sue's Cell Phone Companies that Pray on You with Jon Colgan of Cellbreaker
22 Jan 2016
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This is The Top, where I interview entrepreneurs who are number one or number two in their industry in terms of revenue or customer base. You'll learn how much revenue they're making, what their marketing funnel looks like, and how many customers they have.
Chapter 2: What is CellBreaker and how does it help consumers?
I'm now at $20,000 per top. Five and six million. He is hell-bent on global domination. We just broke our 100,000-unit soul mark. And I'm your host, Nathan Latka. Okay, Top Tribe, this week's winner is Charlie Dags, okay? He was a middle manager at a manufacturing company. He wants to break free, and he won the $100 I give out every Monday.
For your chance to win, simply subscribe to the podcast on iTunes right now, and then text the word Nathan to 33444 to prove that you did it. Coming up tomorrow morning, Top Tribe, we hear from Matt Gallant. His supplement company did 280 grand last month. Here's how. Okay, Top Tribe, good morning.
Again, I've got my coffee this morning, cuddled up, about to get deep with our guest today who you're really gonna love. His name is John Colgan. He's the founder of sellbreaker.com, an NC Idea Grant recipient of 2013 and a 500 Startups Accelerant in 2015. Here's a little fun fact.
To talk about Cellbreaker, John was the last scheduled interviewee with Diane Sawyer before she retired as ABC World News nightly anchor in 2014. Here's a funnier fact. John hasn't brushed his hair since the seventh grade. And as a lifelong entrepreneur and former UNC ethics debate captain, John's mission is simple. Give consumers confidence to veto bills they don't owe.
John, are you ready to take us to the top?
Let's do it.
All right, let's have some fun. Okay. No hair brushing since the seventh grade?
No hair brushing. I woke up one balmy August morning, ready to go back to school, returning from the summer break, and I put a brush to my straight hair, and it curled right back up, and it's basically stayed that way ever since.
I'm gonna put a picture of you, and I'm gonna Photoshop in a comb in the show notes at nathanlaca.com forward slash 131. I wanted to get a shot of that, but let's get into, it's Cell Breaker, correct?

Chapter 3: How does CellBreaker generate revenue?
Got it. Got it. How much do you guys think you'll raise?
We haven't opened the round yet, but we're thinking something in the $1.5 million range.
And you'll do equity, I imagine, right?
Yeah, that would be an equity round.
Do you have a guess? Do you have a cap? I mean, a valuation you guys are aiming for?
We don't yet.
Not yet.

Okay. Do you think it's going to be above or below $10 million?
If we hit our run rate numbers, if we stay on track there, it'll be above $10 million.

Top Drive, one of my favorite tools that I use to pump out great blog content and to really hire growth hackers on demand is Growth Geeks. It's a great tool. I use it for my blog, for my images, to help a podcast production. And I worked out a great deal with the founder because he was on the show. Again, growthgeeks.com forward slash the top. Yeah, great. Well, hey, listen, I wish you the best, man. We're bouncing into my favorite part of the show. Do you know what's next, John? What's up? Dude, it's time for the Famous Five. Are you ready? All right. All right, number one, what's your favorite business book?
One I read recently I really like, Zero to One by Peter Steele.
It's a great one. Number two, is there a CEO that you're following or studying right now?
Yeah, I'll give you one you've probably never heard about.
Okay, hit me.
