What did Amar Doman say about the new CFL media rights deal with DAZN and YouTube?
Secure some price from the historic wall center while getting very exciting around the Canadian Football League, not just this season, but beyond after the huge announcement yesterday. Joining us now to discuss is the owner of the British Columbia Alliance, Mr. Amar Doman. Good to see you again, Amar. How are you doing?
Doing great, guys. Good to see you both.
Would love your two cents on the media rights deal that was announced yesterday.
Yeah, a pile of work went into that. I got to give Stu Johnson a ton of credit. And, you know, the deal that's come out of that is not only good for the CFL's longevity, but expansion of eyeballs, you know, catching up with the rest of the world with DAZN. The YouTube thing is going to be big. It really, you know, kind of calculated through a whole bunch of different changes. And I think we really came out with something not only, again, great for the CFL's long term, let's also talk about you know the players more money all this stuff that's going to come over time more viewership you know some adjustments that you know some bands are going to you know complain they have to pay for a subscription for this now that's just the way the world is now if you ask a kid today who's growing up that's just what's there us guys are like oh we have to pay for something but it's minor and having the zones reach is going to be awesome and of course tsn has been a great partner and will continue to be so it's super exciting and it's a monster deal
Yeah, what would you tell Lions fans about having to subscribe to DAZN now to watch you guys on Saturday nights going forward?
That's the way of the times, you know, and DAZN does the NFL ticket and all that different stuff. So it's just the way of the world. I think you guys know media very well. So you understand where it's, you know, pay for services here and there. And I think DAZN, when things come out, are going to be very accommodating to the CFL to get everything started and You know, it's for Saturday night football. They're going to have their own crew. So they're going to invest in their own team. That's a big deal. So they're not just going to simulcast someone else's like TSN's. They're going to do their own production. And that's a big investment for them. And that's a big vote of confidence in the CFL. So very excited about it.
It's just the way the times are. And it's a subscription world that's just turning to that.
So one more question on Saturday night from me, because I read in the release, 7 p.m. Eastern, 4 p.m. Pacific. Does it stand to reason then that every BC Lions Saturday game going forward is going to be a 4 p.m. Pacific start?
If I had my wish list out, that would be at the top of it. I love those 4 o'clock games here. They're awesome on Saturdays. So we're hoping so this year. All of ours are at 4 o'clock until we hit the fall. So That's great. I think we have three or four this summer starting late in the season. And I hope we can be part of that on Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening football.
Amar, I work for Major League Soccer. They went to Apple. There's been some speed bumps there. They announced some good news today. But there are speed bumps. There's a transition. I'm sure you and your colleagues across the league have to acknowledge there's risk here. There's a bit of a roll of a dice and there's going to be a transition period. Everybody's ready and eyes wide open for all that?
You know, 100%. Stoose, you know, has thought all that through, you know, worked with these leagues and, you know, in the networks, I should say, pardon me. And, you know, really, you know, that one was a little bit different where it went almost 100% to Apple. And there was a lot of, you know, where do I find this game kind of stuff. This year is, you know, we're talking about a game a week in primetime on Saturday. So it's not going to be difficult to find the CFL regularly on TSN like you did. And then the YouTube thing can be pretty special. So kids can stream and do all that stuff on their phones, which is how they watch stuff today.
