It speaks for itself. Mike was reminding me, we had you on during Grey Cup a couple of years ago because we were all down at the convention center celebrating. I got to ask, because I know you've been on vacation, and of course he lives in the castle in Anmore with the moat and everything, but have you got a chance to get into the city and experience World Cup, Donnie?
Well, yeah, not a game, but, you know, our studios, our Donny Dolly Studios, a lot of people think they're in Victoria. They're actually in Vancouver, in downtown Vancouver. I try to get my steps in after every show. And it's funny, Matt, because I saw... It being built, everything being built, the bars being extended out of Granville Mall, the situation with the Jackpool Plaza, the big soccer ball science world that I said to myself, man, And all the painting and everything, the cleaning up that went on, I just thought to myself, is this going to work? Like, do they know what they're doing? And I guess when I was thinking that, I forgot about the word world in World Cup. And, yeah, I got a lot of the vibe by heading downtown after work every day, every work day.
And it was really special. It was well beyond my expectations, especially when it came to the Canadian Games.
Well, P&E's on your way home, too. Did you stop by the FanFest, or did any of your kids go to FanFest or anything like that? You know what?
I grew up near there, and I still haven't been. No, you've got to go, Don. Forget FanFest. I haven't been to the Amphitheater yet. Yes. And you know how old I am or around how old I am. I am going to go see the Guess Who in August. So it's at the Amphitheater, and I look forward to that, even if Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are sitting down while in concert.
When I saw they were on the bill, I was like, I had to Wikipedia to make sure they were both still with us. And I was like, wow, they are. Congratulations to both of them.
As I was sorting this interview with Donnie, I was looking back at our text thread and I realized that I texted him last summer, said, Donnie, I stopped at a BCL in North Burnaby the other day, walked past an old lady at a bus stop, hacking a dart and drinking a can of old Milwaukee. Oh, neighborhood has changed. Of course, it's been a great month, five, six weeks for the city. We're all reveling in all of this. Once again, Vancouver showing off to the world and knocking it out of the park at a major sporting event. But of course, we're asking Donnie to come on here because of some sad news. And that is the end of Sports Talk Radio in Vancouver. And of course, you were a massive part of this, my friend, for more than a quarter century. I've seen what you had to say on social media, but your reaction to the news last week. About 650.
Oh, just how many emotions did all of us go through? And a lot of people go, well, they're your competitors. Aren't you happy? And well, no, it's, it's, it's jobs in our industry and it's just happened way too often. So, you know, disappointed, somewhat shocked, definitely angry. Yeah. And also wondering what's next. And if there's a possibility there could be somebody privately who could come up with a radio station. There's just a million ways to go with this, Matt. But I think overwhelmingly it was angry. It was anger just because this happened so much. And it just seems so easy for them to let go of people. And I don't know about you guys, but People out there in television, radio, podcast world know that it's a very small world.
Broadcasting is not many of us employed in that industry, especially now in that industry. In Canada, I managed to talk to a couple of people who were in the room when the news was delivered.
