And lo and behold, you're back and there's news on Mike Babcock, neither the NHL nor the NHLPA, standing in the way. Your thoughts?
Well, obviously they conducted their investigation and there were things that made players uncomfortable, things that are not cool, things that maybe made him uncomfortable you know, sort of feel like a bully to guys, but ultimately nothing that was criminally wrong that you're going to keep him barred from the league for. So they went through with the investigation and here we go. I will say that selfishly from an analyst, hockey analyst point of view, I'm compelled by this. You know why? Because when the Oilers play like crap at some point, and I'm sitting there at TSN at 1 a.m. getting ready to do SportsCenter hits, I can let it fly. And you know what? I can be, and every analyst can be, and every fan can be as critical as they want.
It's open season to be critical of the Edmonton Oilers when they play poorly this year. And you know what another thing? I think this is going to be the most critical anyone is ever going to be of number 97 this year. Where now, if you start to see the flybys and you start to see the cheating for offense kind of stuff, it's like, okay. We're going to call it out now because you got your guy in Babcock and a lot of people had bad experiences with him, but you guys had to have him. No problem. Everyone will have their say now and there's not going to be any hiding from it.
I couldn't believe when the name first came up, like I literally could not believe it. I can't believe it even more so now because the trial balloon went up and I thought that's what this was, was what would the reaction be? Let's leak this out, see what happens. The reaction was so 100% negative, Frank. I can't believe we've got to this stage.
Yeah. This is, this is where we're at, right? Like, okay. And I said it last week about, you know, X's and O's and, you know, smart about hockey. And if we sat in a room watching, watching a game, we'd all learn something. Right. But if in other aspects of life, if you had a workout coach or a life coach or a, I don't know, any kind of, you know, coaching seminars on whatever, you name it, like work broadcasting, who knows? The actual protocols are some of it. How they talk to you, how they make you feel, how they convey the message, that's the majority of it. That is what coaching, the essence of coaching is more than just the actual protocols in place. And that is where he is highly, highly deficient.
What was the NHL/NHLPA conclusion on Mike Babcock and why does it matter?
So it's going to be really fascinating to see how that whole dynamic goes down because what's going to happen? The Oilers say they want to be... they want to be pushed and they want to be held accountable. Is he going to have the stones to hold McDavid accountable if he's cheating the game? When he's cheating the game, is he going to have the stones to say something about Evan Bouchard and the turnovers and the giveaways or the Edmonton goaltending? I can't wait to see it because we've all talked about it, but sometimes things get glossed over. Let's see if he's actually going to hold them accountable and is actually going to push them in the right ways.
