We finally have a coaching staff here, Jeff, plus we have more clarity on the offseason ahead. How are you?

Okay, well, let's start with the coaching staff. Second straight offseason, they've hired an inexperienced coaching staff. In this case, outside of the head coach, nobody appears to have NHL bench experience. Does the inexperience concern you?
I was always of the idea that it made perfect sense to surround Manny Milholtra with a coach that had some NHL head coaching experience. And we see that through the league. And I guess I felt pretty strongly about that up until the hiring the other day and the hirings. And then I got around to thinking. With where the Canucks are in their competitive arc, guys, I can't imagine that there will be a single in-game decision this year. A single game state... Like... conundrum for Manny Malholtra that he would require the steadying presence of an experienced hand on the bench as well. There will be no stakes to the Vancouver Canucks. A coach's challenge in a third period somewhere along the line, if it doesn't go his way, it doesn't go his way.
And I think, you know, There'll be no issues with any of that. So, you know, I think people are right to look at this and think, all right, cost-cutting? Is this just as simple as another indication that maybe the purse strings are being tightened at Rogers Arena? And I know Ryan Johnson last week, again, said, no, he's got the budget to do whatever he wants, but... One thing to say, and I think it is fair to judge the organization on its actions, and with the lack of experience, I think probably comes the pay grade that sort of falls in line with that as well. So that's not – it's not nothing, but my sense here is that – They're looking to bring in a coaching staff that can grow with a young team that is 32nd in the National Hockey League.
And, you know, it's not about wins and losses. It is going to be all about player development. And so on that front, you've got Manny Malhotra and Jordan Smith, who was his right-hand man down in Abbotsford. They've worked with a bunch of players. They've won a Calder Cup with a bunch of these guys. There is some familiarity there. Jason Krogh moves from skills coach. into an assistant coaching bench role i think although the roles haven't been fully defined but whatever the case it's a promotion to an assistant coaching job but he's been around this group he's familiar with the players and has spent a lot of one-on-one time working with them and then they went out and they bring in ryan monjanel who um you know the more i look and read it about him
The guy's 50 years old. This isn't like they're going with a 30-year-old who is just getting his feet wet in hockey. This guy's been a head coach at the ECHL level, the American Hockey League level, has had some success. He was the AHL Coach of the Year. For whatever reason, his team didn't have a lot of playoff success. But this really does feel like the Vancouver Canucks are going with this approach of trying to carry over the summer good vibes. We know that they've done the overhaul in the locker room and addressed, they hope, some of the issues there. And I think they're trying to find a coaching staff that can come in on the ground floor and work with these guys. And if that's the intention, then I'm going to let them have their opportunity and we'll see what happens.
