Anyways, we're going to get to all of that as the show goes along, but we'll start, as we usually do, with our daily poll question. And this stems from the Ryan Johnson interview with Thomas Drance on The Athletic. The Canucks new general manager doesn't explicitly say we're on a budget, but it's something that we have talked about for some time here. Well, first of all, the Canucks left cap space on the table in each of the last two years because they were not competitive at the trade deadline. And if ever there was a time to cut back spending on NHL roster players and to their infinite credit,
with the exception of the lockout free agency period where they lost to Foley and Markstrom and all those guys, the Aquilines have spent to the cap and beyond on NHL roster players and even on the HL side as well. But if ever there was a time to scale back those expenditures, That would be during a rebuild when you don't need to use all the cap space. Remember, you're not necessarily trying to win a cup here. And of course, secondly, in a rising salary cap environment that we have here in our midst with the National Hockey League cap going up $8.5 million this summer. and a projected $9.5 million next summer. And Blake, we have talked about this. There's a lot of teams in the NHL, smaller markets, lower revenue markets, whereby you are no longer a spend-to-the-cap team.
You are a budget team. So, Brian Johnson gets asked by Drance the idea of adding veteran players like Brendan Gallagher, a Tawasin guy, Montreal Canadian, and And Johnson says, quote, we have to take into account budgeting and where we sit with contracts and with players on our current roster. That is one of two references to budgeting or reducing salaries in this interview, at least that I read.
But it's also in addition to all that talk about coaching and should they move on the coach because then they'd be paying another coach and the price of other candidates beyond Ryan Johnson being more expensive. So this doesn't come out of nowhere for the Canucks. There's also evidence here and...
