You were put to work this week as our intrepid reporter because the Canucks are having news conference after news conference again. Overall, if you can assess the week that has been here for the Vancouver Canucks, what did you think?
Yeah, I mean, look, it's all in stark contrast to what we've just come through, where Jim Rutherford, for whatever reason, he chose to live a life of chaos. I mean, that was... He chose chaos. He did. And... He's got Stanley cups and he's in the hall of fame. And for the most part, it worked for him. It didn't necessarily work for him here in Vancouver, but anytime he opened his mouth in front of microphones, he started more fires than he put out. He gave us sound bites for days. I'm not knocking Jim Rutherford in that regard, but it does feel pretty evident that from the top down, the co-presidents, the new general manager, and now the head coach for all the talk about alignment and synergy and everything else.
It's clear that, They don't want to ignite stories just for the sake of giving us things to talk about. And so it's cautious. I think now we fully understand everybody gets it that they are in a rebuild. And that they're going to play the long game here. At least that's what they're saying. Now, everything that is said, it's early June. This is the easy part. Let's see what this team looks like as it goes through the summer months. Because they can't run back the same roster that they just had. I mean, that's... Not going to happen. It can't happen. Nobody's got the appetite for that. So there has to be some moves made beyond the draft. How active are they going to be on the trade front and free agency? All those questions.
But I will say that just sitting and listening to Manny Malhotra, and I covered him as a player, as you did, he's still the same guy. He's measured. He's thoughtful. He's articulate. And I do think that he is going to be able to deliver his message. to his players. And he seems focused on the things that he can control. There's going to be a lot of nights where they're the second best team on the ice. That's out of his control right now. Yeah. But in terms of the incremental gains and the work habits and the approach and all of those things that are under his umbrella as a head coach and try to put a stamp on this team, I do believe that he's going to be able to do a lot of those things. So what does that mean?
Manny alone, is that a five-point bump for the Vancouver Canucks next season?
