Chapter 1: What is Carlton's next move in the AFL?
Shout out to those of you who joined us at 7.01. Good morning to you. You are listening to Fireball Big Show coming up. Tom Morris has been in the building nice and early. His stump's still cartwheeling down the highway as he went to a local club to help out. Help them avoid relegation. That didn't work, so I want the full story and honest view from him when we get him on very shortly.
The agenda's coming up. Fireball feedback. Your call is 1-300-736-736. Right now, it's time for our first thoughts, as we do each and every Monday for Signet. Life's never flat when you power every moment with the Signet Power Bank, signet.com. The best analyst in football is always alongside of me, David Kingsley's name. David McKinney, where do your first thoughts lie this morning?
Well, I'm only going on Jay Clark's report last night that Brad Scott's next six weeks are the most critical six weeks of his coaching tenure. Two tough opponents in the next couple of weeks, and then it really opens up with four winnable games. I think they've got the West Coast, Carlton, Richmond, and possibly the Kangaroos. I could double-check that.
On the back of that and what we're seeing at Carlton, When do you know you're just killing time as a footy club and how do you handle it? I think it's one of the great problems that we have in our code is the wasting of time. I thought Melbourne's handling of the CEO last week not our man, purge, move on, get going again, was brilliant.
And you don't have that, the long goodbye or that dead period of the season where you're just wasting games. It's going to be a very interesting and intriguing conversation, I was going to say fascinating, towards the back half of the year if they've made those decisions already.
So I feel like Michael Voss is a bit more pressing than... And Brad, you may disagree with that at the moment with just the way that it is unfolding there. That's sort of the way it feels to me. And I was watching you and your comments on Saturday night as the Carlton fans streamed towards the exit. And then you sort of said, well, when it becomes bigger than...
just the on-field stuff and the issues that are there for us all to see that we've all been discussing for all of the year. When the fans start to turn and... And look, maybe that happened a month ago. Maybe that happened six weeks ago at the Blues. But when the vision of them streaming out of the exits, it's awful for the club.
So when that starts to happen, then you think, okay, does the club need to act a little bit sooner? As I said two weeks ago, I wouldn't be shocked, unfortunately, whatever day it happens for Michael Voss. The broader discussion is around what do you do with their list? Like, can they have a new coach come in like Stephen King has done and reset the place and be a lot more competitive instantly?
That's the question. So they've got pick three as it sits right now. The Curnow picks that they've got, they've also got pick 18, which they got from Sydney. This is just the way that it sits right now. I know that that's going to change. Wiedering Crips are a large discussion around what they do. with their Crips looks done to me.

Chapter 2: What legacy will Patrick Cripps leave at Carlton?
They just gave up. They laid down and said, got me, I'm gone. And they were mauled. So I feel for Vossie. The question I had for you, the new coach walking in was my discussion last night. I'm going Malcolm Blight style. I've seen enough of some of their players to say he's not ā I don't want him teaching Harry Dean. I don't want him teaching Jagger Smith.
And then we're going to get a whole host of these new kids and they're going to be high picks.
You've had Wiedering in your sights for a couple of weeks.
I think he plays for himself. He plays selfish footy. We've piloted this over the last couple of years. If you put him on a gun, he'll get the job done. Like he can seriously play. But in terms of getting across and helping the others survive, there's an uncontested mark at the top of the goal square from TDK where there were six Carlton defenders, including Wiedering.
And nothing happens because everyone worries about their own backyard. I don't care if we lose, my man is not kicking a goal. And that's an awful mindset. And that's been the case for a while. I think a Malcolm Blight style, get him out, get what you can for him. I want a first rounder and a second rounder for Wiedering. Let's do the right thing by Paddy Cripps.
Let's send him back to Perth and get what we can for him. Let's let him go and purge this constant psychological trauma we give this guy. And then if you want to make a decision on a couple of the others, you might get something for them, you might not. But they've got to have a big shift.
What's the legacy of Patrick Cripps? Nah, superstar.
I think he's been a beauty. I think he's really harshly judged. When the game stops, there's not many better.
Yeah, so that's the majority view. I think, and so well admired and respected for the way that he's gone about it. But what will his legacy be in 10 years' time as a leader? He's played in four finals.

Chapter 3: How is Max Heath performing for Melbourne?
Hall of Fame, all of that, but you've played in two winning finals. And I think it's an interesting discussion.
How did he play in those finals?
He probably played, I'd have to go back and look at the numbers, but rarely did he play poorly. He doesn't have many poor games, but as a leader of this footy club, there's a lot of, I don't know, how demanding has he been on this group? I see a lot of sort of smiles with Kripp, right? I never really see him be demanding of his teammates. I never really have. I've never seen him be demanding.
not accepting of what they have delivered for so long. Now, maybe it's a situation like, maybe Dustin Martin might have been the same at Richmond, but they brought in others to help him. Maybe Carlton never supported Patrick Cripps with the defensive runners, the high half forwards. that can cover for his weaknesses and just let him be the star.
Maybe that's unfair of me to even raise that because he hasn't been helped. But it's an interesting one for his legacy because it's about winning. It's about winning finals, about winning premierships. And through the whole of his career, he's played in two winning finals.
Yeah, so you're of the belief that the team's success is a major thing.
Dictates your legacy. I think so. You think it does? I think so.
Like, I think it has to, doesn't it?
But the ones that we revere, like Dangerfield for a time there hadn't played in a grand final. He played in, I don't know, six or seven prelims. And it was always a discussion around, well, is he going to get there? How does this affect his, like, now it's complete. No worries.

Chapter 4: What trade could Gold Coast regret?
Charlie Kernow last year, who is it this year? It'll be someone. They need a kickstart.
All right, 1-300-736-736. Spent an extended time on the Blues there, but they're clearly the biggest topic. They're the team that will lead Kingy's show last night and the Monday shows tonight. Plenty of other footy on the agenda as well for Dexian. Unlock your warehouse's potential with the latest innovations from Dexian and for Didi. Yes, I Didi this footy season.
More of our and your first thoughts next. Strong feedback off the text on our discussion around the Blues and Paddy Cripps. Thanks for sending all of those through. This is our first thoughts as we continue with those. Kingy, what else is on your agenda?
What else have we got? Oh, we've got plenty. Have we seen another skinny Sean? Tell me more. Max Heath? Oh, he was good, wasn't he? Well, I saw him at St Kilda a couple of years ago in a practice match against the Bombers. I remember doing the game. It was one of those early February games or mid-Feb games. And I thought, what's going on here?
I was actually hoping they'd play, I can't think of his name now, the left footer. Laddams? No, no, no, the Saints. He'll come to me in a sec. Keeler. Keeler? Is it Isaac? Isaac Keeler. Yeah. Yeah. I'm just being very careful with who I mention these days. I'm just taking my time. Those names come to me, Cornsy. Yeah, I was hoping they'd play him this occasion. They didn't.
They went with Max Heath in the ruck. And he just looked really heavy and slow. And I thought, no, he's no chance of making it. Well, since he's gone to Melbourne, obviously he would have been a work in progress at St Kilda. His body shape has totally changed. He just looks rock hard fit. And to see him jump against Grundy, that was a great battle yesterday. Grundy took the honors, no doubt.
He beat Max and both the Maxes, Heath and Gorn. But to see this young man just stake a claim for an AFL career, he looks like a really promising player.
Some of his tap work at the center bounce, I thought, stood out. And the beauty of it, I've been asking a question for ages, what's life look like after Gorn? From a leadership point of view and also from a ruck, point of view. And can this give Max an extra couple of years? He went forward, he kicked a couple of goals.
He's not a natural forward, Max Gorm, but if it can save his legs for late in games and also extend his career with five on the bench, this is a good move. And they got him for nothing. I think it was a fourth round pick as well. So I wouldn't mind staying on that game with Roses, who I know you highlighted last week in terms of his ranking as a... Horny, Horny did.

Chapter 5: How is Brisbane dominating the competition?
Horny put him under the lights. As the second highest rated small forward behind Nick Watson. And he's kicked five in the first half, he's kicked seven for the game. I was like, what did they give up for this guy, Gold Coast? And it was nothing. It was like a bag of chips, really, what Sydney gave up to get him and how important that could be. And then I look at
Gold Coast and their lack of small forwards. So if you're looking at their smalls, would you say like with their goal kickers, Gold Coast, so King's got 28, Petrarca 12. Long, I'm not counting, is a small forward. He doesn't quite play that role. Reid, Humphrey with six goals. He's not really a small forward. Probably their only small forward is Lombard, who's kicked four goals. Roses has got 13.
Is this going to cost Gold Coast a shot at the premiership with this trade? And did they know what they had with Roses?
It's a hard one, isn't it? He's 24. He's played just short of 60 games. You're seeing him just become ā you're probably seeing his ceiling at AFL level. In a different system that probably works for him more than the Gold Coast system, to be fair. And they have that much talent. These sorts of guys get pushed to the side. The Holman, Rosas types, they get moved out.
I don't have the answer to that. He'd be a different player at the Suns. We wouldn't see this at the Suns.
Well, we've seen him. You're right. We've seen him at the Suns. But not do this. No, at all. So did they write him off too quickly? Should they have been more patient with him? Did they know what they had? Did they have the right role for him? These are all the questions. But I'm looking, they're desperately in need of a small forward goal coach.
They've got one who's kicked four goals and the rest are
mediums and talls and then they've got roses kicking five and a half and seven for the game and you go i hope that doesn't come back to bite them on the final well it's it's one of those roles that when you haven't got it it stands out like you know i won't say what it stands out like because i'll get in trouble again you're getting trouble with level five where when did um do you know what i found out during the week what's that there's another level above level five
What do you mean? Hang on a sec. I feel like we haven't maxed out yet. We've got some growth.

Chapter 6: What happened with the Brisbane whiteboard leak?
Any initials?
Kingy, you want to speak about Brisbane? Above Hutchie? You mad cuddler. I don't think it's above, just below. Above level five? Just below Hutchie, I think.
I'm going to have to follow that up. Brisbane, they look a little bit bored with footy at the moment, don't they? And when they want to flex, when they flex, it's game to bed in 15 minutes. What they did on the weekend, they just had fun. They were like a cat toying with a mouse for about 100 minutes. Kick the ball around, play a bit of uncontested footy. They can't defend.
Let's just have some fun here. How much talent they got.
All of a sudden, Wilmot just gets his 32 and he's bombing them from outside 50. Like, Lohman's probably going at 60% of his.
He dropped more than he took, Lohman.
I know. Rainer's the same. You've spoken about him. Logan Morris is a freak. There's just talent coming everywhere. So they got Carlton this Friday night. I think that's your game, isn't it? That would be a seven game, not my game.
Oh, sorry. I thought you were part of the fraternity over there.
We're always on Friday night. What do you mean?

Chapter 7: Who was the biggest loser from Round 8?
Well done, you idiots. Keep going with it, guys.
West Coast and Colton. You'll break him. Well done.
I was so pleased with myself. Great. That's growth from me. Well, disappointingly so.
Since you've spoken to whoever it is, Voldemort upstairs. Who's the one we can't mention? Is it Dumbledore or Voldemort? Voldemort.
Yeah. It'd be a good name, actually, for the next level. All right. We'll speak about Whiteboard Gate on the other side of this. Coming up, a new concept for Kingy, a version of pick and stick. I don't like it. I love it. I don't like it. Hoff or not a little bit later on. Firstly, as we continue our first thoughts for Host Plus, that's a plus.
Chris Fagan, when asked about the whiteboard leak, which did the rounds over the weekend.
What I'll probably say is I'm not going to comment about what was written on that whiteboard because from our perspective, it's private information. You know, somebody illegally took photos of information that was on a whiteboard and then decided to make a hero of themselves and put it out in the public domain.
I reckon it's a little unfair when it's your workplace and it's what you do every day and it's information that we keep internal and we've been doing it for nine years. We've been writing the strengths and vulnerabilities of opposition players up on a whiteboard. So, yeah, I'm not going to comment on isolated things that were written on it.
I can promise you, though, that nothing was written up there that had... that there was anything sinister in mind or degrading in mind at all.

Chapter 8: What insights can we draw from the overall discussion?
I don't think you're going to have ā you're not going to expect people to be walking through taking photos of your facility like that.
Yeah, but you can't leave yourself vulnerable to these sorts of things. I just can't ride on a whiteboard out here today in the SEN foyer and say that's my workplace and you shouldn't be taking a photo. That is my workplace.
Yeah, but you're not expecting ā you know people are going to be walking through there. You're not expecting people to ā So what if in the internal meeting room there was some information left on a board and someone broke into that area and has taken a photo and shared it everywhere? Is that an error because they didn't wipe it off the board or they just think this is
IP, private information that shouldn't get out there. Breaking in is different.
Is it? Well, of course it is. Of course it is. They've had people through their facility. They are aware of people coming in.
They've done it for nine years and this is the first time it's ever happened.
I get it. I get it. So just put your hand up and say, small error, no drama, we move on.
Yeah, so let's not question their culture over this. Like, their culture is winning games of footy. And I would be pretty happy with Brisbane's culture at the moment.
Yeah, no, I don't know of anyone that went with their culture. Yeah, they did.
