Thanks for joining us on Fireball for the last hour as we look ahead to Saturday night and one of the all time prelim final matchups between Brisbane and Hawthorne. The coach of the Hawks has been good to us all year.

What did Sam Mitchell think when he saw Brisbane dominate Adelaide last weekend?

David King 0:14
His name is Sam Mitchell. Mitch, thanks for joining us again. Yes, thanks for thanks for having
Sam Mitchell 0:18
me. Looking forward to it as much as you guys.
David King 0:21
You sat back and you watched Brisbane end Adelaide season in about five minutes and their small forwards and midfield were going crazy, Mitch. What what was going through your mind when you watched that last weekend?
Sam Mitchell 0:32
Oh, I'm sure I was a bit like everyone else saying, Gee, Brisbane have uh woken from their slumber, haven't they? Um But I did take it did take a bit of solace in Adelaide getting back into it, getting back to ten points and um reeling them in and then um just couldn't sustain it. So there's uh Plenty of work to do when you play a side like Brisbane. They haven't won played in the last three or four grand finals and five prelims for for no reason. There's plenty to work plenty to work through but I'm confident we can do it if we play our best.
David King 0:59
So on the basic level and on the surface level, uh we sometimes look at matchups and who's gonna play on who and who's gonna take Loaman, who's gonna take Rayner, Cameron, Bailey. Uh do you look at it like that or is i it's certainly more a team approach when it comes to trying to shut them down and what they do?
Sam Mitchell 1:16
A bit of bit of both. Certainly we have some desired match ups that we'll try and get. Um how much we commit to those depends a bit on what the opposition do. So um we'll have some players that are that are set for them, but you know, if they start in the stoppage or they start deep then they're likely to get different sort of match ups depending on the skill set of our defenders. But I think it is a game where some individual matchups will go a go a long way to the outcome, which um isn't the case in every game. A lot of the time it's the collective, but I think in in a game like this with so many um talents in both sides you expect a few matchups to be pretty important.
David King 1:49
Was selection easy for you? Was it just
Sam Mitchell 1:51
straightforward? Um, uh it wasn't as hard as it can be. Um, but there was still plenty of plenty of discussion, so um we're still still been tossing up with the second ruck quite a bit about how to how to manage that. We've still um been talking, you know, the last couple of players picked are always a bit of discussion and we've got a couple of guys in really good format. At Box Hill, so they got a grand final on Sunday, so they get to keep playing as well. So that keeps the whole squad together, which has been a benefit this year.

Mitch, good luck for the weekend. I'll tell you what, this this weekend we we look forward to preliminary final weekend uh more than anyone. We really do.

How does Hawthorn balance individual match‑ups versus team defence against Brisbane?

Kane Cornes 2:26
We love it here. But this will be a cracker. I mean everything says this'll go down to the wire. I I'm I'm really interested in You're planning for this game, how much do you have to give up of what what you want the game t you know, how how you wanna play with your ball movement and your setups and stops, things you've done all year, how much do you have to change or or or alter that to play specifically against Brisbane?
Sam Mitchell 2:52
Uh well it's definitely not zero and it's definitely not everything. So I mean you're you'd you'd be silly not to be very aware of your opposition, especially when you've had a little bit of extra time to prep for them, so I feel like we've got a pretty good grasp on. on Brisbane. I think everyone's been watching them for the last three or four years and and looking at how they go about it. So, um, you know, we certainly have a couple of things that we wouldn't do against every team that we will try to try to implement against Brisbane. Um, but, you know, when you watch the game you'll still say, Oh, well that's a Hawthorne side, they play the way that they always play, um, for the majority. But it's probably there's a bit of detail that we we have to make a couple of alterations because of how they set up and I think
