I'm really surprised that neither president nor CEO, not sure about the footy boss, Craig Cameron. These are all strong leaders, you would think. I think Damien Hardwick should have been spoken to. The decision from the club was that would have been churlish given that he had chosen to self-correct himself. But there is certainly a view that the club needs to be more mindful of Damien Hardwick when he's emotional and disappointed and goes into these press conferences.
So that's just tugging his coat, though, isn't it? Like that's just saying, okay, look, we know you're upset, you're angry, okay, but this is what you need to think about and make sure that he's got a clear head and he hits his messaging. Now, I know we're about to play Sam Collins, okay, and we'll play it and then I've got a comment to make about this yesterday because this is him facing the media. This would have been a pre-planned thing that a player had to do, step up and do a media conference, and here he is talking about his coach, Damien Hartwick.
He's acknowledged a bit of a mistake. He was extremely upset after the game. Well, upset's maybe the wrong word, emotional, as were a lot of us after the game. He handled himself really well, Sam Collins, yesterday. But my point about this is, I know that Damien Harwick is going to step up and do his media conference later in the week. But given the circumstances and the fallout over what he had to say at the weekend, why didn't he join Sam Collins? Sam Collins still could have answered some questions. Why didn't he front the media yesterday and respond as opposed to having a player effectively, the way that this played out, being the person that was excusing his behaviour and explaining his behaviour? That is a really good point. I guess that he has a media conference already this week. Yeah, I know. Which is later in the week. He could have just said, look, before you talk to Sam, I just want to state this is what's happened since the weekend.
I had to reflect on what I had to say. I handled myself poorly. I shouldn't have said what I did. I put pressure on our club. I put pressure on our player. I was wrong.
And then just handed it over to Sam. That would have been a great solution. But my sense with Damien Hardwick is as much as he's been a great coach, he actually isn't great at acknowledging his mistakes a lot of the time. He doesn't really understand that he makes these mistakes because he's made so many of them now over the last year and a half.
