Welcome to the Sky Sports Euro 2016 podcast. Right, this is the Sky Sports Euro 2016 podcast. I'm Andy Burton. Nick Collins, our chief football reporter, is alongside me. We are in beautiful Shanty. The sun is shining. We just sat by the main road that goes through past the England Hotel, where it is a glorious day here. And it's a chance now for us to recap on some of the issues around England. We've been following this team since they arrived here in Shanty, but in truth, all the way in their build-up, their European qualifying campaign. Nick, does it start to feel now to you as if, you know, we're kind of talked out, we're ready to actually see some football? France will start us off tomorrow night against Romania, England, of course, on Saturday night.
I kind of feel like we're ready for it now, don't you?
and it's the end of the phony war and thank goodness for that because it's great to build up to a tournament but it has been going on for a long time as you said that the warm-up games now we we know that we're off to Marseille tomorrow the whole thing will start for real tomorrow night with the opening game yeah it will feel like Euro 2016 is underway and then The whole tournament takes on a life of itself and it's just a case of jumping onto the roller coaster, hanging on and waiting until you get thrown off at the other end. But it's hugely exciting now and you get a sense of that actually from even the England players because of the simple reason most of them or half of them have never been to a major tournament before.
It's fantastic for them.
Yeah, you've been to more tournaments than some of them added together with England. How do you handle the pressures of being so close to this roller coaster ride? You're not quite in the roller coaster, you're kind of hanging off the edge as a reporter that's so close to England. How do you cope with it?
Well, you get into a routine as simple as that, I suppose.
What are the latest updates on the England team's preparation?
Early starts, late finishes, take it all on board and enjoy it. It is an amazing experience being part of a tournament like this. Maybe at the time you're not saying, I'm enjoying every minute as we go, but When you finish, at the other end, you look back at it, you do go, oh, that was an amazing experience. Yeah, my first tournament was Italia 90, the closing stages of that. Then Euro 96, France 98, away we go. You name it, I've been there. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't keep coming back. And that's the bottom line.
How does your level of optimism, and obviously, you know, you are effectively, you are an impartial party here. However, it's very obvious you are an England fan. I'm an England fan. How do your levels of optimism compare in this one to recent tournaments?
That's a good question, actually, Andy. I'm not over-optimistic, but having said that, I have really sensed a growing and rising tide of optimism amongst England players that perhaps they're not going to come out and say they're going to win it or anything like that but they do believe they can do themselves justice this time around and hey, we'd settle for that after 2014 and 2010 in the World Cups when you can't say England did themselves justice. The most optimistic I've ever been was 2004. I did feel England had the strongest team at that tournament And nothing I saw on the pitch really made me change my mind. Two injury-time goals cost them victory over the holders, France, then two spectacular wins, followed by a goal that allowed an extra time that would have seen England pass Portugal, and then another one of those.
horrendous penalty shootout defeat so yes that's that to me that was the one that got away but quietly confident I suppose is a good way of describing it this time around I'm not expecting England for one moment to necessarily go to the final but you know if they made the semi-finals I wouldn't be completely surprised and as everybody says if you get that far in a tournament who's to say they couldn't take that one next step
And that's actually a remarkable... I'm with you, I agree with that.
