Hazard inspires Chelsea at Brighton

20 Jan 2018

Transcription

Chapter 1: What key moments led to Chelsea's 4-0 victory over Brighton?

7.827 - 20.422 Jamie Redknapp

Here goes Hazard. He could go all the way as well.

0
0

20.662 - 39.572 Kelly Cates

Cool as you like from the man of the match. He was man of the match, Eden Hazard, and full-time he went over to a young boy in the crowd who proved that if you don't ask, you don't get. He came home and he will be going home with Eden Hazard's match shirt. So in his vest with Willy Caballero and Jeff Shreves, here is Eden Hazard.

0

41.495 - 46.441 Unknown

Eden, but Willy, first of all, when goals and wins have been hard to come by for Chelsea of late, is that just what you needed today?

0

46.842 - 56.835 Willy Caballero

Yeah, of course. We need to come back to winning ways and we did it. We did it. We had three points more and we are so happy for the performance of the whole team.

56.815 - 63.828 Unknown

The first two goals in that first ten minutes of play, Aydin, was that the best Chelsea have been for some time? Yeah, we started the game very well.

65.572 - 90.534 Eden Hazard

The combination between Michy, Willian and me, even the midfield were brilliant. So, yeah, we need to do more like this week after week. But then, at the end of the first half, we had a little bit of a problem, but the chance with Thibaut was not here, but Willy was there, so we saved some goals today and at the end of the game we won by 4-0, that's good.

91.455 - 95.682 Unknown

As well as the delight of the goals, there's also a bit of relief because the goals haven't been coming lately.

96.438 - 110.785 Eden Hazard

Yeah, for sure. When you score early, then you think the game is maybe over, but it's not, especially in the Premier League. You never know what's going to happen. But we did well, we defended well, and we scored four goals, so that's it.

Chapter 2: How did Eden Hazard's performance influence the match outcome?

157.108 - 159.234 Willy Caballero

We need more time. That's all.

0

159.254 - 169.538 Unknown

Does 4-0 also not tell the story of Willy's several stunning saves today? The fact that it was 4-0 as well, it doesn't tell the story of the saves that Willy made.

0

169.558 - 184.78 Eden Hazard

Yeah, of course. It's 4-0, but also he did a great performance. So everyone who was watching the game can see this. He did well. He deserved this. He did against Norwich three days ago, now today. So he's a great, great keeper.

0

185.36 - 193.072 Unknown

Career League goals of number 100 and 101 for you. What does it mean to be back amongst the scorers? It's my job. It's my job to score.

0

193.833 - 209.076 Eden Hazard

But it hasn't been happening lately. Yeah, yeah, I know. But, you know, every game I try to score goals or create chance or create assist. That's why I like to play football, to enjoy on the pitch and score goals. That's what striker, midfield try to do every game.

209.576 - 214.043 Unknown

Will this set you up, ideally, for the game against Arsenal now, midweek, this performance and this result?

214.58 - 233.237 Willy Caballero

Well, I tried to do my job today. Now we have two or three days to think about the semi-final. And the boss has to choose the best start, the best 11 for this game. And I'm so happy for my game today and try to continue in this way.

233.677 - 240.643 Unknown

You certainly did your chances of selection no harm at all today. One last job for you. Eden is Premier League man of the match. Could you do the honours, please?

241.024 - 241.704 Willy Caballero

Eden, please.

Chapter 3: What were the reactions to the denied penalty claims by Brighton?

330.295 - 349.351 Thierry Henry

I watched the game against Leicester. They were not scoring goals. They needed to win the game. Leicester at home. And it took him off after 58 minutes. And when you do that to a player like him and the quality that he has, that woke him up. Because at the beginning of the game, he meant business. He came for a purpose.

0

349.391 - 374.4 Thierry Henry

I remember also last year, Antonio Conte was doing that a bit before the Arsenal game, kept on taking him off. And we all know what he did to Arsenal last year when he took that ball from the halfway line and decided to just win the game. But he has that in his locker. And I like the way he reacted today from what happened against Leicester. That's the job of a boss.

0

374.54 - 393.966 Thierry Henry

Sometimes a player might be tired, sometimes he needs a good reminder that maybe he's not doing enough. I'm not saying he wasn't, but maybe he's not doing enough. And usually when you take a player after an hour, the player, off, and he goes on the bench, you're supposed to win that game. You're not scoring goals. You're the main man. I'm on the bench. OK, we'll see next week.

0

395.067 - 411.467 Jamie Redknapp

Speaking before the game, Kelly, maybe a bit fatigued, he didn't stop today. He looked as fresh as I've seen him. It was like the first day of the season. And I'm sure the players in there that played against him today will be going, how do we stop him? Did we talk about maybe the system didn't help? with nothing to do with the system, it was to do with Eden Hazard today.

0

411.527 - 413.712 Jamie Redknapp

He decided that match today, unstoppable.

413.812 - 422.23 Kelly Cates

And decided it from early on. We'll look at him, we'll look at his goal in particular, but the goal from Hazard coming as early as it did after just three minutes.

422.564 - 441.266 Jamie Redknapp

Yeah, I mean, they're a little bit unfortunate. I mean, they worked the ball really well. This touch here from Stephens just takes it to Adam Hazard. And you can see he's got too much space there, Hazard. But that first touch drops his shoulder. Because he gets so low, it's so hard to stop him if you're a defender. Because you can see he's away from you so quickly.

441.286 - 460.016 Jamie Redknapp

He shifts the ball, and then it's a really good finish. This touch here, because he's going to clear that. That's dunk, isn't it, the five? He's going to clear that now, but he can't. All of a sudden, problems. Touch, gets it inside, quick movement, that low centre of gravity, he shifts the ball and then, bang, reverses it into the other corner. Fantastic finish.

460.537 - 466.988 Jamie Redknapp

It just makes you wonder, actually, why he doesn't get more goals. Because he's so devastating when he gets in front of the goal. He's such a good finisher.

Chapter 4: How did Chelsea's strategy change throughout the game?

506.568 - 525.778 Thierry Henry

OK, I gave it to you. Boom, goal. I like that. I like that when people like to share. This is the type of goal you have to show to a lot of kids. Do you want it? Oh, he want it. OK, you have it. It's just simple. But that's what the Premier League is all about. Top quality player with a great vision and a great finish.

0

526.039 - 531.688 Jamie Redknapp

I want to ask you about Shuai because I think a lot of people go, well, he didn't score today. I thought he did all right today. I thought he did well.

0

531.969 - 537.639 Thierry Henry

I always get annoyed when people only judge a striker by his goals and that's the way it is.

0

Chapter 5: What does Willy Caballero's performance reveal about Chelsea's defense?

537.719 - 558.771 Thierry Henry

I know it. We all know it. But today I thought he held the ball well. His liquor play was good. Did he score? We all know. No, he didn't. But that was his fourth start of the season. And to go back some time when you call the point, it's not an easy one. He held the ball ever so well there on the first goal. We all know what happened on the goal of Willian, where he flicks it for him.

0

558.791 - 566.562 Thierry Henry

That's an assist for him at the end, right here. His awareness was good. The only thing missing was the goal. But you can't say that he didn't play well.

0

566.997 - 570.744 Kelly Cates

Yeah, we looked at them all individually. How did they work as a three, do you think?

0

571.766 - 591.084 Thierry Henry

I mean, they kept on passing to... Oh, that was nice also. No, but they kept on passing the ball to... What a touch there. They kept on passing the ball to each other, the three of them. And I think the pace that they have, the three of them, they were always... close to each other to be able to interact, especially on the counter sometimes.

0

591.104 - 603.163 Thierry Henry

That's why sometimes it's a bit difficult for Eden Hazard and Morata, sometimes when Willian is not playing, because they don't have a guy with extra legs to be able to join them on the counter, and Willian did that today.

603.413 - 607.638 Kelly Cates

Aden Hazard, though, the third goal was all about him, wasn't it?

608.179 - 625.06 Jamie Redknapp

It was, but I would also say that the runs helped it so much. What's Batshuayi and what's William? As soon as they play that ball, look how quick they are to join him. If they don't make the runs, I think the defenders will have stepped with Aden Hazard, but you can see William one way, Batshuayi the other, and that just gives him that space, but it was brilliant individual play.

625.12 - 638.859 Jamie Redknapp

I mean, the way he moves the ball, he's so fast. But you can see, what's William here? If he doesn't make that run, the defender goes with him, will stay with Hazard, and all of a sudden it doesn't free him up for that space. I think he'll be congratulating his teammates there, but he was the difference, Thierry.

639.439 - 654.902 Thierry Henry

Listen, you want him to be on that ball to make the decision, but I go back to what you said. Kids, the runs of Willian and the run of Batshuayi, if they don't go there, then that doesn't make it easy for Eden to score.

Chapter 6: What impact did the early goals have on the match dynamics?

823.835 - 834.245 Unknown

I know you spoke to John Moss at half-time. He said he didn't see the first penalty appeal and the second one he felt was just a coming together between two players. Having seen them yourselves, are you pretty sure they were both penalties?

0

834.545 - 863.277 Chris Hughton

For me, two penalties. The first one, I thought at the time. The second one, I wasn't sure. And on any refereeing decision, when the goalkeeper comes out, there's every chance that there's going to be a decision to be made. So what you have got to do is get yourself in a position where you can see it. And if the referee says that he hasn't seen it, it's not one that I don't believe.

0

864.478 - 883.204 Chris Hughton

But there was always going to be a chance that there was going to be a decision to be made as soon as the goalkeeper came out. And when you are a Brighton, particularly in the form that we're in playing against a Chelsea, albeit they're 2-0 up, you need some things to go your way. And we've had two that haven't.

0

883.96 - 888.505 Unknown

It's never going to solve everything, but decisions like that, does it just make you feel that you want VAR every game?

0

889.706 - 914.935 Chris Hughton

No, no, I must admit. It's nowhere because next week's a different week and it could go the other way. It could go the other way where it's Chelsea that are having the penalty appeals. I think that's a bigger question. What I have to think particularly at this moment is that We go into a cup game the next game. I've got to make sure that we've got a group of players that look at the positives.

915.056 - 920.223 Chris Hughton

And there were. There were a lot of positives, I thought, today. But it's not like us to concede the goals that we did.

921.305 - 927.113 Unknown

With those positives, though, balanced against the position you're in, what are your overall thoughts and the lack of wins of late?

927.498 - 949.725 Chris Hughton

We need more points, and in order to get more points you need to score more goals. It's very difficult for a team that's just been promoted to have both, and if you are scoring goals and very good and prolific in the final third and not conceding them, then you're a top-ten team, or possibly a top-eight or top-six team.

949.705 - 969.597 Chris Hughton

The rest of us have some difficulties in our game, either conceding too many or not scoring enough. And at the moment, as I said, our probably downside is we've been conceding too many goals from set plays. In open play, we've been very good. But we've got to find a formula to get the goals that we need to win games.

Chapter 7: How did Chris Hughton assess Brighton's performance despite the loss?

1041.489 - 1060.826 Dermot Gallagher

He's trying to make that second-rearmost defender. When he looks across, that decision happens so quickly. You're looking at distance. You're looking this way. And when you see it like that, there's Caballero come out. The second-rearmost defender is no longer the goalkeeper, so he's got to be aware of that. And he's looking at slightly different things to what the referee is.

0

1061.207 - 1063.07 Dermot Gallagher

And I think that clouds his judgment a little bit.

0

1063.29 - 1076.575 Thierry Henry

But that was his side. The incident happened on his side, on where he is standing at that particular moment. When the ball is cleared first by Caballero with his hand, what else is he supposed to look at? He has to look at what's happening in front of him now.

0

1077.854 - 1093.758 Dermot Gallagher

But his first priority is offside. So when you see the players cross, the keeper's come out. So he's then got the problem. He's got to look across and see where's the second-rear-most defender, which isn't the goalkeeper. So that's his first point of contact. When he's looked across, the incident may already have happened.

0

1095 - 1097.263 Kelly Cates

Emma, what would VAR say about this?

1098.762 - 1119.736 Dermot Gallagher

VAR, Katie. Big talking point at the moment. I think the VAR would have looked at that, said to John, as soon as the ball's gone out of play, the next stoppage was actually a foul by Duffy on Batsuwai. And the VAR could have said then, look, we've had a look at that, we think it's a clear and obvious error, and therefore you're well entitled to go back and give a penalty.

1120.317 - 1124.263 Dermot Gallagher

And I think the pitchers would have reinforced that and everybody would have been happy. Second.

1125.037 - 1130.99 Kelly Cates

John Moss was saying that he felt that the second penalty was more of a coming together. Would you go along with that?

1133.696 - 1135.079 Dermot Gallagher

Sorry. Say again, Kelly, please.

Chapter 8: What future challenges do Chelsea and Brighton face after this match?

1450.984 - 1465.743 Thierry Henry

As I said before, I watched the game and Leicester should have won and deservedly created so many chances. It was very unlike Chelsea, the way they played. I think that Antonio was referring to the games before where they missed a lot of chances. And that's better.

0

1465.823 - 1479.499 Thierry Henry

That's better for them to go into this type of game with scoring four, not conceding, although Brighton had a lot of chances, but they didn't concede. So that's a plus for them going into the derby in the Carabao Cup.

0

1479.479 - 1491.394 Jamie Redknapp

I think what you said earlier about Willian and Hazard as well. Thierry mentioned you were talking about during the game. Those two were really good today. And when they link up, they're on the same wavelength. And that's what you need. I'm a big Cesc Fabregas fan.

0

1491.414 - 1505.773 Jamie Redknapp

You have to play a different style of him because he's not going to run 40 yards up the pitch and play clever little one-twos like that so much. He's one that will pick a pass out and slow the game up to his pace. And of course you need players like that at certain times. But I thought today Willian and Hazard were just sensational.

0

1505.753 - 1514.171 Kelly Cates

He is often very low-key in interviews, Antonio Conte, but you know him. What do you make of his demeanor at the moment? Does it look like a man who's happy in his position?

1514.191 - 1531.405 Thierry Henry

That's just him. When he's happy, he's like this. When he's upset, he's like this. I mean, that's just how he speaks. Same tone, very low voice, always praising his players. During the summer, he obviously was unhappy with the way they went about their business.

1531.485 - 1541.16 Thierry Henry

And I don't think he's extremely happy with the way they are going with their business at the minute, because I think that he would like to have a bigger squad, especially in depth.

1541.46 - 1544.164 Kelly Cates

Is that fair, do you think, for him to ask for that?

1544.144 - 1547.809 Thierry Henry

Well, they won the league last year, so definitely not.
