Chapter 1: What were the key moments of the Super Sunday match?
David Silva, Sané, difficult angle, difficult challenge for Van Dijk. Penalty for Manchester City at Anfield against Van Dijk. It's a massive moment here where Manchester City so rarely win. And a win for the penalty anyway. It's almost putting it out of the stadium.
But a clean sheet nonetheless, having conceded seven here in their previous two visits this year, and a point as well. John Stone's giving his reaction now to Jeff Shreves.
John, how great is the sense of frustration that you were so close to ending 50 years of anguish at Anfield?
Yeah, so close. It's one of those things in football. He was taking them really well in training all week, penalties, and it happens, so we had to move on and kind of got the crowd going for Liverpool, really, and we had to dig in right at the end because those sort of moments in games can go both ways. could have been a goal and the game could have been over.
Like it was, we didn't score and they could have gone and got a late goal at the end, so we had to keep our heads and keep switched on, but I think it's progress from last season, great progress, how we competed against them. They're a top team and to come to Anfield and get a clean sheet is something that us as defenders are really proud of and I'm proud of all the team with how hard they worked.
It was such a physical battle today, I thought, Everyone put the shift in and did the job for the team.
Back to the penalty itself. Aguero's off. Is there a second designated penalty or is it just left to the players to sort out themselves?
Yeah, I've literally just started celebrating that we got a penalty. It's a great opportunity to go and win the game. not taking any notice who was taking the penalty so I thought it was just decided between the boys and as I said, Riyad was taking them really well in training all week and I had the courage to step up. How was he in there? Yeah, he's deflated and

Chapter 2: How did the penalty incident impact the game?
I think if it was me, I'd be the same. I think he feels he's let us down. But how he played for us today was, you know, he gave everything, kept the ball and he was top. And I thought if he scored a goal, it would have made his day. You know, as I said, those things happen and I'm sure he'll score another one.
As you say, though, is it not a sign of progress that you come out here disappointing at one as opposed to not losing?
Yeah, as I said, it's clean sheet at Anfield. It's not something that you can do very often. The attacking threat's brilliant from their team and we stopped that today. I thought we defended really well as a team, not just the back four. and kept them to as less chances as we could. We had chances at the end. It wasn't going to be one of those games where you score early and get another one.
It was going to be right until the end, and it was.
Chapter 3: What did John Stones say about the team's performance?
We can take a lot of positives from it and be proud of how we performed today and, as I say, after international, take it into the next game and hopefully get another three points.
Thank you, John.
Jamie Carragher has rejoined us, but I suspect, Craig, you've probably had more to do with penalties than Jamie has and the taking of them and the deciding of who takes them. So, as Johnstone says, that conversation, he didn't know who was going to take that penalty.
So how would that work itself out? Well, sometimes, you know, I've been with managers where they let the players sort it out between themselves. Who's on form? Usually you have one penalty taker. And that was, you know, it was clear it was Aguero. But obviously he wasn't on the pitch.
And then who's on the pitch at the same time is sometimes who's playing well, who's been taking him well in training. Benitez, when they rough up Benitez, would have second and third penalty taker. And you had to stick by that. You couldn't change. Because I did try that once in Peleha. and missed and paid a big fine for it. But sometimes it just depends who's in form, who's playing well.
Who's having a good day. Yeah, exactly that.
If you're the manager, Graham, do you almost have to let the guy that really wants to take it have it?
Yeah, I mean, you have a nominated penalty taker, but for whatever reason he might be having not such a good day, and someone really fancies himself. I mean, penalties, A, you've got to be a good striker over the ball. Mahrez is certainly that. But on the day, he got under it a bit too much. I mean, it's generally someone you know that is a good striker and then it comes down to courage.
I might be such a strong word, but someone who really fancies it and is prepared to take the responsibility.

Chapter 4: What factors influence who takes penalties in a match?
That's how much the analysis has gone now. There'll be three, four, five players, the City players who are the goalkeeper. And this is not just Liverpool, who everyone looks at now. All the analysis of the four or five penalty kickers, where they put it. That's just a little reminder of, OK, Mahrez there. And also, you look the way he actually turns his back.
I don't think he wants to be jumping about on the sideline and let the city then see what he's sort of telling them or one of the city players. So it must be something, a little connection. If there's a penalty, you're not quite sure. Just have a look at the bench. He makes a signal. Listen, it goes over the bar. But he dives that way. That's the way the penalty goes.
Let's bring you some more reaction, this time from the Liverpool dressing room. Virgil van Dijk now with Geoff Shweeps.
Virgil, does that smile tell me that you're a very relieved man?
Yeah, not smart to dive in there, it was a penalty, and I said it to the ref afterwards as well, and, yeah, it shouldn't happen, but obviously very happy that we didn't concede. Did you watch the penalty or did you look away? I watched it because I wanted to get the rebound if he missed it, so I was very happy that it didn't go in.
There were a few moments today in terms of attacking moments on either goal. Do you think it was down to the quality of both defences?
Yeah, I think they did well. I think we did well up on the penalty moment. Yeah, it was a great game to play, obviously. Yeah, unlucky that we didn't score and unlucky that we didn't concede as well.
Do you think you just cancelled each other out?
I think we did, definitely. I think it was a tough game against the champions and... Yeah. Happy that we kept a clean sheet, especially after a penalty. How were the energy levels today after midweek? Very good. We were up for it. We wanted to bounce back from our defeat against Napoli.

Chapter 5: How did Mahrez feel after missing the penalty?
I think we did. I think we played well at times. Obviously, they have a good team. They have a good plan of football as well. We know it's going to be hard. I think... Yeah, what I say, happy with not losing today. Thanks for stopping. Thank you very much.
That smile tells us, doesn't it? Huge relief in that Liverpool team tonight.
Yeah, I think go back a year, they don't get that result today. City were very good. City, on the face of it, coming away from home, coming to Anfield and getting a draw, they've had a better result. But I think if you analyse the picture, go back... pre-Van Dijk, pre-the goalkeeper, Liverpool don't get that result six months ago. Nine months ago, a year ago. No, they lose that game.
I thought City came with a more rigid formation, didn't commit Silva as much in midfield. I thought Fernandinho was fabulous for them in an obvious way, but just someone who broke things up, sometimes bordering on being illegal, but for me, did a great job. I think Liverpool should be pleased with that.
Chapter 6: What are the implications of a clean sheet at Anfield?
I felt... The 90 minutes that Liverpool had on Wednesday in Napoli would show today. Liverpool play a high-intensity game of football. They got run ragged on Wednesday night. And City had the extra 24 hours to recover, and I thought that would play a factor today. So I think Liverpool should be encouraged. A year ago, they've made the changes. A year ago, they lose that.
And on the back of what happened in Italy on Wednesday and the kind of game they had as opposed to what City had, they should be much encouraged by that.
That's Gary Neville-Wright then. What he's talking about during commentary, that Liverpool can't play that front three, or the bulk of that team, Champions League and Premier League.
It is difficult because of the intensity they play at. The speed, the run intensity, high intensity. But really, you bring Daniel Sturridge into it, those three are going to play a lot of games. But at the same time, I'm... It's a positive result for Liverpool, this. But also, I thought Man City showed Liverpool a lot of respect. You count how many times the full-backs were really bombing on.
I thought they held their shape. Man City learnt lessons from last year. Because I also believe last year, Man City would have thought, we can get this back four, no matter what we do. They were cautious today. They were really cautious. Defensive? No, I wouldn't say defensive, but their shape was much better in transition.
I thought the full-backs were done very well, defended narrow, so it was very difficult for Mane, very difficult for Salah to find those spaces. And at the same time, I thought they controlled the tempo of the game without committing too many men forward, which was a lot of respect to Liverpool.
Listen, I know it was 0-0 and we're all disappointed and a lot of people back home will be disappointed, but I thought it was a really high-quality game.
The thing on Liverpool's front three, what Gary's mentioned in terms of the Champions League, Liverpool did it last year. They got the Champions League final. Now, last season, because Liverpool never won the league, those three still played in the league, so they still go into every game wanting to win. They were still fantastic.
At Gary's point, they were 25 points behind City last year.
