Chapter 1: What were the highlights of the Manchester City vs Everton match?
Well, that has read the appetite for another weekend of Premier League football. Watching Manchester City again next week at Bournemouth, who've lost their first two without scoring. That's Saturday lunchtime. West Brom hoping to make it three wins on the bounce to start their season again. Stoke, Arsenal's conquerors, kicks us off on Super Sunday.
And then it's Arsenal themselves going to Anfield, also on Super Sunday. All those games available in Ultra HD and with Dolby Atmos for Sky Q subscribers. Star Wars The Collection available right now on Sky Cinema, featuring Rogue One. Rooney!
1-0!
It's Danilo with a cross.
Sterling! Raheem Sterling rescues ten-man Manchester City.
Pulse 18 from start to finish. How was that, Jamie, to kick us off on Monday Night Football?
Great start. It was. It was a great game. I mean, probably Everton probably slightly disappointed. 1-0 up goes down to 10 men. But you have to give great credit to City's second half. The chances they created with 10 men, you know, continually putting Everton under pressure. But still looking at that, they look like they've still got big problems that we highlighted before the game defensively.
What a night it was for Everton and for Wayne Rooney, who is waiting to speak to us now. Congratulations, Wayne, on reaching the 200. But how would you sum that up right now in terms of your emotions?
Frustrating. I think going 1-0 up at half-time and obviously with the extra man, we felt we could try and see the game out and maybe nick another goal. But I think you'd have to give City credit. They changed positions a lot, made it difficult for us and, as you said, created some good chances. But I think before the game, a point would have been a good result.

Chapter 2: How did Wayne Rooney perform in his return to Everton?
Gary, Wayne, there's a lot of talk over the last two or three years around your position, what's your best position, where you're going to play in this part of your career. You seem to play in two or three positions tonight. How has it been in this last couple of months, getting used to a new club? And also, what position do you think you'll settle into at Everton?
Yeah, I think obviously the man just made it clear he wants to play me in any of the attacking positions. As you know, guys, I've done that all my career and I think the thing with me is to play. Last year I didn't feel I played enough games and obviously if you're not playing them games you don't get that match fitness and I think I paid the price for that.
But I've had a good pre-season and played a lot of games over the last few weeks and I feel good and I think that's vital for me if I'm going to play in these different positions.
How sweet was it scoring at the Etihad?
Well, again... No, of course, it was nice, obviously. Obviously, my history with Manchester United, I've scored a few times here, but to do it, obviously, today in such an important game for us, such early on in the season, we've got tough games coming up. It was a sweet moment, and I'm sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed that one as well.
Wayne, Gary just mentioned about your own role in the team. How do you see this team going forward? A lot of money spent, you've come in yourself. Is there more to come in terms of this transfer window and even going forward over the next two or three years? A big aim for you to get that first trophy for Everton for a long time?
Yeah, well, we can certainly improve. I think it's early days, obviously. We've made a lot of signings this summer, and as you're seeing tonight, Sigurdsson making his debut, David Classen coming in, Michael Keane, Pickford, myself. So there's a lot of new players, and some young players as well, Mason Holgate tonight, Dominic Calment-Lewin.
So it's a big change after the club, and we're ambitious. We're trying to move forward, trying to be successful, and Time will tell. We can certainly get better. That's what we aim to do over the next year or two and hopefully that will bring some more success.
Wayne, with the players you've brought in, there's a lot of excitement there. You've come in yourself, I've just mentioned that. Do you think you've got enough that you could actually win a derby game?

Chapter 3: What tactical changes did Ronald Koeman make after the red card?
So, no, I've always put a shift in for the team. I've always done that and tonight was no different. Obviously, towards the end, it was getting tough for us. They were putting in a lot of pressure. But, no, I think it's a good result for us in the end. We'll go back, look at it and see where we could have done better, especially when they're 10 men.
There's an England squad being announced on Thursday as well, Wayne.
You'll be listing out for that?
I will see, I'm sure. I'm focused on everything. I'm sure I'll speak to Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we'll have a conversation and see what happens.
Interesting. We look forward to hearing the outcome on that and we look forward to welcoming you in the studio here on Monday Night Football very shortly as well, Wayne. OK, cheers. See you soon. Well done. Didn't quite promise, but I think he might be coming to join us soon. Some of his performance tonight, Gary. Excellent.
Obviously, his work rate's always there.

Chapter 4: How did Manchester City adapt to playing with 10 men?
I mean, I have to say that just thinking about, sort of, he looked free, actually. He looked free, looked like his touch was there, looked like his confidence was there. Obviously, he scored two goals.
But I think it's as if over the last two or three years, people wouldn't have been satisfied until they'd seen him out of the England squad, out of the Manchester United team, away from sort of that. And then all of a sudden, people might start to celebrate him a little bit more.
And what I've started to see in this last probably couple of weeks is actually it's been a tough ride for him sort of publicly over this last few years. You just heard him there refer to a player that's not fit anymore. But actually, he has a right not to be as fit as he once was.
The work that he's put into his career, as this is some of his clips from tonight, he held the ball well, he protected it well. He pointed towards Calvert-Lewin, who I thought was outstanding. It's the best I've seen him. And I mentioned before the game about the impact of Wayne Rooney. That's his goal, which was a magic moment for him.
That Everton team hasn't got what I would call a lot of, well, they haven't got a lot of success as a club. They haven't had a lot of inner steel in big matches. You think of their record away from home. He's fearless when it comes to big matches. He's fearless when it comes to big moments.
I think that the confidence that he will give his teammates just by being there, seeing him there in that line up at the start of the game, thinking, don't worry lads, this is not a big game. This is fine. I'm out there. It will settle them down an awful lot and he'll have a big impact in that dressing room.
and hopefully it'll continue for him do you think jamie it has given him a new lease of life this move
Listen, it's not just moving sort of away from... Listen, he had a great Man United career, and it'd come to the end, as it does for us all. But it's not just moving, it's moving to Everton. His family still went the game, his kids were still Everton fans.
It was... I'm sure not even just sort of this summer, if you'd have asked Wayne Rooney five or six years ago, where do you want to finish your career, he'd say Goodison Park. Because he's an Everton fan, he always will be when he... He's like you, isn't he? Yeah.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of the red cards in the match?
I was jumping when City scored there. What I'm saying is Phil played for Everton, but he's always going to be a Man United fan. Now that's his club and that's what it is with him. And I think, I said it last week, that is a great story for the Premier League. Seeing sort of Wayne... I said last week, the best moment for me was Wayne Rooney.
The best moment of the weekend was Wayne Rooney scoring a header. Great goal, but what it meant to him, the celebration, what it meant to the crowd, the supporters. And I think Gary was obviously spot on with what he said about Rooney. Everton...
haven't got that sort of presence even when I think we might look at it later the sending off happens he's right over there to the referee that sort of that presence around the place and he got you know the players sent off but he's there someone who people can look up to the younger players at Everton looking at him and
What he does in terms of the position he played, he ended up right midfield again as he finished. And I think he's going to play lots of positions. You ask them about that. But his class is intelligence. He said his legs have gone off. People are criticising for that. But you don't lose that intelligence.
Ronald Koeman's been listening to this conversation and delighted to say he joins us now from the Etihad. We may as well start with that, Ronald. We've been talking about Wayne Rooney. Was that performance tonight the reason that you were so keen to bring him back to Everton?
Yes, of course, but not only for tonight. I think he showed that the whole pre-season and maybe a little bit more on the first game when he played Stoke at home. He was that difference between him and the rest. About cleverness in the game, view of the game, and also tonight he had a big impact in the final result.
When you've played that well tonight, Ronald, and led the game for so long, but ultimately you've got a point at Manchester City, how does it leave you feeling?
Disappointed, of course. Maybe you will sign for that point before the game, but 1-0 up by half-time, 11 against 10. But you know even with one less player on the pitch, he has that great talent in football and that can make it really difficult. But I think we... We had problems in keeping the ball and I think we played too fast, the long ball, but I think we controlled it well.
I think the tactical plan was outstanding in the first half and maybe a little bit more, but I think finally we worked really hard for a good result and one point away against City is a good result.

Chapter 6: How did the pundits analyze the defensive issues for Manchester City?
That rotation was really difficult to control the game in the centre of the pitch, but I think our game plan in the first half to give the ball to Otamendi and later on to Kompany was a good decision, right-footed on the left side, and we had really a good defensive shape and we made it really difficult.
And you know by several moments also in the first half you need to be lucky if they don't score, but because they have that quality players then they can score always, every moment in the game.
It's a really good point tonight, Ronald. But how difficult is it going to be to manage this next week with a 2,000-mile round trip to Split? Before you have to face Chelsea.
Yeah, we know. It's a tough week. But I think this point tonight gives a boost for this Thursday. We will do everything to reach the group stage of the Europa League. And we know only two days later on and we need to travel back. Chelsea is waiting, but OK, it's a nice challenge. And I don't criticise that we need to play on Monday and Thursday and Sunday 1.30.
You know the Premier League and we have to accept it and prepare the game for Thursday.
Good, we're glad to hear it, Ronald. And just finally, is the spending done now?
I hope not. What else do you need? No, OK, we are looking for a left-footed centre defender, maybe the backup for Leighton. With the injury of Funes Mori, we don't have any left-footed on that side behind as a backup of Leighton. That's an option and also a striker, because I think even with the talent of Dominic and Ramirez, look to other squads.
They have that number of players that if we need to make the next step, if we like to make the next step, we need a striker in as well.
Exciting times ahead. Pleasure to speak to you, Ronald. Thanks very much.

Chapter 7: What are the expectations for Everton's season after this match?
But it's one of those, we've all played in it, where you sort of come off slightly disappointed because you're 1-0 up and it's 10 men, but you'd always say, we'd have took that before the game. So Everton have got a tough run of fixtures coming up, so our point here, I think, is a great point for them.
65% position, I think, City with 10 men tonight. So there were positives from them tonight, really good again going forward, but evidence of... Yes, again, one or two defensive frailties. Again, so much still to talk about here on the Monday Night Football.
Finished one apiece at the Etihad just as it did last season between these two when we saw two penalties missed last year, two red cards tonight. And this is the first time that Pep Guardiola has played a team in his league career in three occasions and failed to beat them. But, Gary, having said all that, is there something to be positive about for City tonight?
Yeah, lots to be positive about. Pep Guardiola will be disappointed with certain aspects. He'll be disappointed with the decision on Kyle Walker. I think he'll still look at the back three and think about things like that. But his performance in the second half with 10 men was outstanding.
To dominate possession, to dominate the game, people might point towards Everton and say they should have done more, they could have come out. Not many teams will come out of there alive this season and Everton have done, they should be thankful for that because City were fantastic in the second half.
They were wasteful with the chances, they should have took the chances and it's a good performance with 10 men. They were under pressure, they could have lost that game tonight if they hadn't had the quality that they did. They had the quality second half to keep dominating the match in the way in which they did.
It's not easy to do with 10 men against a good Everton team, a good Everton performance, and they can be positive about that, I think.
But having spent, what, £217 million, are there still concerns defensively about this team?
There has to be, I think. I think Pep Guardiola will look at that game tonight and obviously coaches will reflect on what's not been quite right. We were defenders. I said before the game, the question this season for City is not about those front players. Yeah, they have to take the chances and they will do, I'm sure. But the back three. And, you know, we're just going to show you one clip.

Chapter 8: What were the final thoughts on the match and its impact on the league?
In your first game of the season at home, there's a weakness there.
Does that create confusion as well?
I think it creates a lack of trust in the sense that once you're being switched, when Otamendi can't handle Calvert-Lewin, you're sort of thinking something's not quite right. And I think ultimately the question mark over this team... I think the goalkeeper actually did OK tonight, so park him for one second, maybe the goal. But the three at the back... you can get at them. You can get at them.
John Stones has been substituted. I know that's tactical, but he's been substituted. The back three, they've not kept a clean sheet. Otamendi's been got at. Kompany looked a little bit short. And you have to say that for this first goal, the conclusion...
the conclusion of the switch is that Otamendi on the right, Stones in the middle, and Kompany to the left-hand side, is that the ball still gets played in there, Kompany deals with it, to be fair to him, mistake by Sané, but now you made the point perfectly at half-time. There, there is no way Vincent Kompany should do anything but stay with that run. He should never, ever come to the ball.
He's got a midfield player getting across in Fernandinho. He's got Sané retreating. You do not commit forward. And he does, and he makes a bad decision. And I'm surprised, because Vincent Kompany is a fantastic defender. And what he does, he quickens up the attack. He quickens up the attack. Everton go in front, and you'll see it here again now from a better angle.
And that is probably, I would say, still something that makes Pep Guardiola, maybe even the Manchester City fans, quite nervous. They've got a back three there, and whether it's a back four, you can get at them. They don't look solid. They don't look like they're reliable. And I'm not quite sure how they deal with that other than keep working at it and improve. They have to improve.
Again, he looks rash at times. There are big question marks over that back three. Not so much in terms of the football. The football is absolutely wonderful. It's a joy. And I have to say, this should take more of the chances. This should be clinical.
Did take one in the second half, though. They did, and they deserved it. And to be honest, that was quite critical in here at times with Sterling when he came on in terms of his finishing. He blazed one over the bar. And there was something interesting in the game, actually. Just before the ball comes in, for most of the game, I think we've got Guy and Sneijder in there.
