Rashford & De Gea seal Ole's sixth win

13 Jan 2019

Transcription

Chapter 1: What were the highlights of Manchester United's win over Tottenham?

7.861 - 11.285 Paul Pogba

Pogba. It's a threatening ball to Rashford.

0

12.527 - 32.471 Patrick Davison

And Rashford fires it across Lloris and into the net and sends Manchester United into the lead. And that was enough to win it for Manchester United, but it only tells half the story because in the second half, Spurs were brilliant and David De Gea was even better. Simply unbeatable. More saves in the second half than any keepers made in an entire game this season.

0

32.852 - 35.455 Patrick Davison

De Gea and Rashford with Patrick Davison.

0

36.92 - 41.747 David Jones

Guys, well done. None of them have been bad, but was that the best day yet under this manager?

0

42.768 - 58.189 Graeme Souness

I think definitely the most difficult. This is the hardest we've had to work for a result. But, you know, we put in a lot of work today. The second half was more difficult than the first half, but it doesn't matter now that we got the three points. So we go home now and prepare for the next game.

58.55 - 63.096 David Jones

David, when all your teammates come to you at full time, do you know you've had a good day?

Chapter 2: How did David De Gea's performance impact the game?

63.211 - 79.766 David De Gea

Yeah, especially because we won the game against a top team like Tottenham. I think we just have to win. We controlled the first half, but the second day they put a lot of pressure. They had chances, but we defended well and we have the three points.

0

80.226 - 87.893 David Jones

Eleven saves in the second half, no other keeper has made that in an entire match. Do you get to the point where you start to feel unbeatable?

0

88.874 - 108.14 David De Gea

Well, I was feeling very well with the first two saves. But, yeah, it was a great game, especially, like I said, for the three points in that pitch at Wembley, with the fans, a great game, so very, very happy. From the XI, can you pick a favourite, can you pick a best save? No, I don't even remember some of them, so I'm happy with everything. No post.

0

108.741 - 114.75 Graeme Souness

It was his fault. He's bailed you out, hasn't he, Marcus? I see.

0

115.321 - 122.128 David Jones

Just tell us about the plan today because it seemed it was obviously a different game to the others you've had under this manager and the plan seemed different.

Chapter 3: What tactical changes did Manchester United implement against Tottenham?

122.768 - 142.307 Graeme Souness

Yeah, we played a slightly different system but against a team like this it was needed because the other teams that we've played have played pretty much the same system so today was a different game and we prepared different for it and the tactics changed but this is what we have to do to beat the top teams, we have to adapt and we keep pushing and keep improving.

0

142.388 - 150.034 David Jones

Gary Neville said in commentary that you're the man now, maybe for the first time under this manager, you're the go-to guy for goals. Are you enjoying that?

0

151.235 - 165.467 Graeme Souness

I think it's a good responsibility, but I think since this manager's come in, everyone's chipped in. To date, it wasn't about the goals, it was about the keeper today and the amount of saves that he's made is tremendous, but we know that we have that at the back with David.

0

166.728 - 172.193 David Jones

David, you obviously are going to get a lot of the credit for today, but how much credit would you give the manager? How much difference has he made?

0

173.219 - 189.743 David De Gea

He brings me some happiness. I think the players are playing very well. The team is strong now, very strong. I think we know how to control the games, how to keep the ball, how to create chances. And that's very good for us. This is the real Manchester United.

189.976 - 194.28 David Jones

Marcus, I don't think you're going to mind handing this over. The Premier League man of the match, David de Gea.

Chapter 4: What was Paul Pogba's role in the victory?

195.381 - 196.342 David Jones

Lovely little handshake as well.

0

196.602 - 208.813 Patrick Davison

Thank you. Well done, boys. Less elaborate than the Spurs handshakes, but effective all the same. Perhaps remarkable that when you see David de Gea in that kind of form, only his third clean sheet of the season, but maybe he hasn't been in that kind of form all season.

0

210.034 - 217.401 Patrick Davison

How do you sum that up, Graham, when you see Manchester United winning for the sixth game in a row, but then you see a goalkeeper...

0

217.381 - 239.231 Patrick Davison

being that inspired to get them over the line well everybody said this was a acid test for him and it was in the first half they were polished you know they looked apart you know on sitting deep defending well and then catching spurs on the break in the second half that's a very different team they're holding on by the skin of their teeth and if it wasn't for him De Gea, they lose this game.

0

239.271 - 260.09 Patrick Davison

Spurs were fabulous in the second half. But they're under luck, United. I mean, it's harsh or hard on Spurs because on any other day they're getting two or three or four goals. But De Gea was just... He's unique, isn't he? Robbie, would you be critical at all of Spurs finishing today? You wouldn't say that very often, would you?

260.511 - 267.07 Patrick Davison

But today, you've got David De Gea, who's probably the best goalkeeper in the world with his feet.

Chapter 5: How did the second half differ from the first for Manchester United?

267.09 - 284.515 Patrick Davison

Maybe a couple of occasions, sometimes you have to change it and lift the ball a little bit higher. Is that something that the players will be aware of, the players will talk about? Well, I would go into a game and know that playing against someone like him, that he's so good with his feet, that maybe a bit more power, a bit more height in the ball.

0

285.756 - 308.155 Patrick Davison

We've seen on a couple of occasions, three or four he saved for his feet. That one there is, I mean, you would expect him to save that. But the ones beside his feet, he's so quick and so sharp. We're adjusting his feet, his agility. So you need to mix it up a little bit. I mean, this one alone, why is he going with his feet? Because he knows he's going to save it. It's like, I think...

0

309.282 - 318.435 Patrick Davison

Every other goalkeeper is trying to save that with his hands. I can only think of one goalkeeper, and it was a great Pat Jennings here. You're too young to remember her. Who was his equivalent.

0

Chapter 6: What challenges did Tottenham face during the match?

318.715 - 337.382 Patrick Davison

That's how he saved Pat Jennings time and time again. But United have got him to thank. You can see by the reaction of his own players at the end of the game how much that meant. They knew that him to thank for that victory today. Yes, it's a very different United. It's a very different United in terms of easy on Nye, looked threatening in that first half.

0

337.362 - 357.241 Patrick Davison

DO YOU THINK THAT WAS THE CASE IN THE SECOND HALF, GRAHAM? NO, THEY WERE HOLDING ON IN THE SECOND HALF. FOR ME, THE UNITED LOOKED TIRED. THEY HAVE BEEN AWAY TO DUBAI, FRESH, LITTLE THINGS LIKE SLEEPING IN A STRANGE BED, A DIFFERENT PILLOW, TRAVELING, GOING TO SPEND 15 HOURS IN A PRESSURISED CABIN, ALL THOSE LITTLE THINGS PEOPLE DON'T THINK MATTER BUT THEY DO.

0

357.661 - 370.182 Patrick Davison

I THOUGHT THEY WERE HOLDING ON FOR A LARGE PART OF THE SECOND HALF. WAS THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE TIRED OR BECAUSE SPURS WERE UP TO THE GEAR? SPURS WERE FABULOUS TODAY. They didn't have a shot on target in the first half. No, but in the second half, the more they made up for it.

0

Chapter 7: What does this win mean for Manchester United's season?

370.202 - 391.207 Patrick Davison

They found another gear in the second half. What about Manchester United attacking-wise, Robbie, particularly in that first half, particularly the quality of the goal? Yeah, the goal was a great ball from Paul Pogba, as we said, in the first half. Trivia, you can't be playing a blind ball like that. Not when you've got quality players like Pogba.

0

391.227 - 414.945 Patrick Davison

And as we said before the game, Rashford playing through the middle, he's got so much pace. And that was the difference between the two teams today, the finishing. Harry had a couple where he probably should have put a cross. David De Gea. This is a difficult finish, and he makes it look easy because he's got so much confidence at the moment. As he said after the game, he's in great form.

0

414.985 - 431.761 Patrick Davison

He looks like a player who's relishing playing as a number nine. Did it look, Graham, like a deliberate tactic to release Martial, and particularly Rashford, as soon as Manchester United won the ball back? I think when you've got that sort of pace, that's always part of your plan. But you know you're playing against the Spurs team that's going to come after you.

0

Chapter 8: How did the panel assess the overall performance of both teams?

432.222 - 451.83 Patrick Davison

Spurs are going to attack. And when you've got people in good possession like Trippier was, not under pressure, he's got time to get his head up, decide on what pass he's making, people commit themselves then. They're committed because they think he's not going to give it away stupidly. He gave it away stupidly and it was tailor-made for Man Utd at that time with the pace they have in Rashford.

0

452.19 - 470.721 Patrick Davison

It was a stupid goal to give away. When... I liken it to my field players. The minute you start going, instead of going forward or square, you just cannot give it away if you're going square. And it's even worse for a defender, and that's what he did. Everyone's thinking he's wearing good possession here. Everyone's thinking he'll pick the correct pass. He made a complete hash of it.

0

471.041 - 491.464 Patrick Davison

But then you have to say, on the plus side for United... Paul Pogba gets at his feet. It takes him two touches to get out of his feet. But he knows where he wants to go after the first touch. And he delivers an exquisite ball with a great pace. And it's just fading in the path of Rashford. And it's not an easy finish. You're thinking if that's De Gea, he saves that. That was today.

0

491.524 - 505.205 Patrick Davison

The small margins. Big performance again from Paul Pogba this afternoon. Delighted to say we can hear from him now live. He's speaking with Jamie Redknapp. Jamie, over to you. Thanks, David. I'm joined by Paul Pogba. Paul, obviously the involvement in the first goal. How important was that win today?

0

506.387 - 528.841 Paul Pogba

Obviously it was very important. It was for us a big test. I mean, Tottenham needed points as well. We needed points. We carry on our winning consecutively. And today, really, team performance was obviously the key of the game and we've done it today. We're really proud of it.

528.861 - 548.491 Patrick Davison

Well, let's have a look at the first goal. Obviously, you are heavily involved. Jesse Lingard does really well. He just comes in and reads that initial pass. When did you actually see it, Paul? Because as the ball comes to you there, you have a little... I'll just take that back a second. You have a little look to your left-hand side. Then you realise that Rashford is in.

549.913 - 556.1 Patrick Davison

Just one second, let's get that back. Let's make the most of that pass because it was so good. And you see it there and it's a fantastic pass.

556.74 - 582.351 Paul Pogba

It's a great ball but we've been training on this. We knew that was the weakness of Tottenham when they attack in one side. They get high and we needed to attack in the opposite side. So we've been training and that's what we did and we scored a goal. Yeah, we were prepared on this. We knew it would be a very difficult game and we knew we could hurt them in this contract.

582.591 - 594.167 Patrick Davison

So certainly first half, because Marcus Rashford was just getting in alongside, I think it was Vertonghen and Ben Davies. That side was always on for that pass through. Is that something, obviously, you say you worked on and it obviously came to fruition?
