Chapter 1: What are the latest updates on the Premier League's restart?

14.189 - 32.949 Scott Minto

Good morning. Welcome to the Football Show. Just one week away now from the restart to the Premier League season. On today's show, we'll be talking to the Peterborough United owner, Darren McCantney, on yesterday's League One vote to finish the season. We'll also be chatting to Liam Resignia, Chris Boyd, and the legend that is Ruud Gullit.

33.55 - 43.42 Scott Minto

Two legends with me all morning, Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp. Graeme, just seven days away now. You're not playing anymore, but was this about the point where you started sharpening your studs?

0

47.922 - 66.437 Graeme Souness

Yeah. I mean, you can do all the training you want. You can do all the practice games you want. But when it gets real, you go to another level. Mentally, you get yourself in that zone where you have to win football matches. Exciting for the boys. They'll be desperate to win football.

Chapter 2: What was the outcome of the League One vote to end the season?

67.396 - 87.261 Scott Minto

Indeed. Jamie, end of an era, especially with the last episode of Redknapp's Home Fixture this week and time for the restart. Just behind you, has that all been sorted now back to normal? Yeah, that's been a bit of a makeshift studio for a while now, but it's nice. I can't wait. We've been very fortunate to speak to a lot of the players. Jordan Henderson was on this week's show and you can see

0

87.241 - 101.76 Scott Minto

The excitement he has, looking forward to getting back, obviously. He didn't want to say too much about getting his hands on the trophy because they don't want to tempt fate. But I think you could see that he is chomping at the bit to get back to what he loves doing the most. I think it's the same for all players.

0

101.78 - 111.573 Scott Minto

There'll be a bit of nerves as well with the teams in the bottom six because of obviously what relegation can mean to football clubs right now. But it's exciting times. Thierry Henry was on as well. He was fantastic.

0

Chapter 3: How does Ruud Gullit reflect on his legendary career?

111.613 - 129.008 Scott Minto

So we were lucky we had some really good guests. It's been a good show. Enjoyed it, Jane. OK, remember, if you want to get involved, use the hashtag Sky Football Show and we'll try and get your questions to the guys a little bit later on. OK, let's kick off this morning with the EFL meeting that happened yesterday, trying to condense it a little.

0

129.048 - 148.517 Scott Minto

The championship we know hopefully will be restarting next weekend. League Two voted for curtailment with automatic promotion and relegation based on the unweighted points per game basis. With the playoffs to come, we knew that would happen, really. The contentious division was League One. And that's gone the same way, which means Tranmere, Southend and Bolton are relegated.

0

148.958 - 165.73 Scott Minto

Coventry and Rotherham promoted, with Wickham moving into the playoffs and Peterborough dropping out. Dara McAntony, the Peterborough owner, joins us. Dara, good to see you. Thanks for getting up early again in Florida. Look, first of all, tell us how the meeting went and the process of it as well.

0

Chapter 4: What insights does Gini Wijnaldum share about being a perfect midfielder?

166.992 - 188.234 Darragh MacAnthony

Um, the process is you sign in via obviously video software, sorry, morning guys, by the way. And, um, you, you, you get to see who's in the meeting with all the different faces. And the first meeting was a general EFL meeting about 70 odd clubs in that meeting, uh, two people per club were allowed in. And there's a bit of chit chat beforehand. Then obviously the chairman takes over Rick Parry.

0

188.695 - 209.925 Darragh MacAnthony

He starts talking through the process, uh, jazz Moxley, then one of obviously the, uh, directors. runs through the voting process. My partner, Jason, was on with me and he obviously had the voting system at hand. They ran through the five or six proposals about, you know, Tranmere put a proposal together, Barnsley put one in, Stevenage put one in, Ipswich.

0

210.226 - 229.821 Darragh MacAnthony

And then you got to vote on the different proposals. But in fairness, they allowed people from Ipswich, Tranmere to explain the proposal to everyone and to go back over it again, even though we had it right in about a few days ago. But the real disappointment was there was like 75% of clubs had already proxy voted. So they hadn't even really waited to listen to anyone or hear anyone out.

0

230.302 - 235.211 Darragh MacAnthony

The vote was in. So, you know, I kind of knew going into it anyway that was going to be the case.

0

Chapter 5: What does Liam Rosenior discuss in his letter to President Trump?

235.651 - 258.813 Darragh MacAnthony

I had an idea. But I wanted to be, you know, part of the process. I wanted to hear it. I wanted to hear if people had any thoughts on anything. But very little said. So it was well worth it getting up at 5 a.m. yesterday morning for it. And then later, a couple of hours, then the EFL League One had their own vote. After the vote went to, let's curtail it, then we voted on that.

0

258.833 - 277.611 Darragh MacAnthony

Do we want to play football? Do we not want to play football? I'm sorry, the earlier vote earlier in the day, obviously nobody voted for the Trinomere proposal, the Barnsley proposal, the Lincoln, the Ipswich one. So in the League One general meeting, basically, I think 18 clubs voted not to play football. Four or five clubs voted to play football. And that's...

0

Chapter 6: How does Kris Boyd analyze the current state of Scottish football?

277.591 - 279.874 Darragh MacAnthony

That's all she wrote. It's done.

0

281.496 - 287.505 Scott Minto

So what did you say? Did you say anything during the meeting at all? Did you say anything afterwards?

0

288.767 - 305.37 Darragh MacAnthony

No, I might shock people. I actually didn't say a word. I sat there. I listened. I said a lot at the last meeting. I spoke to a lot of clubs the last few weeks. I've been on the phone. I knew the vote was in. There was nothing I would say. There was nothing I could say that would change anyone's minds.

0

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the Black Lives Matter movement in football?

305.35 - 322.667 Darragh MacAnthony

Mark Palios from Tranmere obviously tried to explain the Tranmere one through. And the technology can be difficult at times. It's not the greatest technology, if I'm honest. So when people are trying to explain, and it's probably one of the most important presentations of their life, you know, it's all based on the internet and it can break up.

0

323.238 - 340.889 Darragh MacAnthony

You've got a lot of people on those calls, probably there was 70 on the first one, there was probably 50 then on the League 1 one. And I just wanted to listen. I wanted to hear the numbers for the votes. But I knew the vote was in and it meant no difference what I was going to say. And then obviously other stuff was spoken about in the League 1 meeting as well.

0

342.432 - 345.938 Scott Minto

So your thoughts on a decision then? What do you feel should have happened?

0

346.947 - 357.786 Darragh MacAnthony

Look, Scott, I've been really transparent from day one. When this happened in March, we'd just been in Portsmouth and the world's obviously collapsed. The virus came in. No one knew what was going to happen when we were going to play again.

0

Chapter 8: What are the future plans for clubs in the English Football League?

358.347 - 366.441 Darragh MacAnthony

But the idea always being that, look, we're going to stop playing until we knew more. And the EFL, it always led us to believe, you know, we're going to finish the season.

0

366.421 - 380.903 Darragh MacAnthony

We were one of probably the few clubs who didn't furlough players because we wanted to be professional, have our players, you know, working with the sports scientists every day from home, be ready for when we get back up and running. Every letter we got from the EFL was stated that we want to finish the season.

0

381.659 - 411.615 Darragh MacAnthony

finish the season and we went along with that I spoke to Rick Parry myself early in May Rick Parry the chairman I said to him you know what are we doing things seem to be improving and he said look we want to finish the season things seem to be improving there's no reason not to finish the season so again went along with that and you know from my perspective my partners Jason and Randy all the fans of Peterborough my staff it's a big disappointment because we vote for football we will always vote for football we own a football club that's what we do I understand all the health concerns and

0

411.595 - 422.745 Darragh MacAnthony

But we've now been told football's back. The Prem's back. The Champ's back. The EFL is like 71 clubs. We want to be playing football and we've been told we can't play football. So it's devastation and disappointment.

0

424.287 - 439.341 Scott Minto

Hi, Darius. Jamie Redknapp here. I was just listening to what you're talking about there. And I've looked at your fixtures and a lot more home games as well. So for that reason, do you feel disappointed to a certain extent and let down by what you've been told? Because it feels like you led a bit of a merry dance there.

440.03 - 455.517 Darragh MacAnthony

Yeah, we were, we, we base and I don't, I don't want to cry me a river story that I'm a poor old Peter, but we'd won seven of our previous nine games. We were the form team in the league. We had one of the best home records, leading goal scorers in the football league. Our last nine games, we'd had tough fixtures early on.

455.537 - 473.264 Darragh MacAnthony

We played seven of the bottom nine, the last nine games, five out of nine were at home. And this P this points per game weighted on weighted system has basically thrown us out of the playoffs and we would have got automatic promotion. I'm superbly confident on that. Where we were as a team peaking at the right time, it was all set up for that run-in.

474.145 - 491.508 Darragh MacAnthony

Our next fixture, when the season was called off back when we beat Portsmouth back in March, the following day, we were due to play Bolton. No disrespect to Bolton, but they've obviously been, you know, beaten quite heavily this season by many teams. And if we'd had one more day, no doubt we would have beaten Bolton. We'd probably be sat third or even second.

491.889 - 507.86 Darragh MacAnthony

So it's just mad, the timing, everything that's going on. So, Yeah, we feel better. We feel unjust. Because as I said, we voted to play football. That's what we do. And we wanted to do it. And the way it's, you know, it's done now. You know, most of the clubs in League One and League Two don't want to play football.
