Usually, a primetime White House address is reserved for major announcement from the president, wartime updates, national security. You remember the announcement that Osama bin Laden had been killed. Sometimes there's economic policy, like in the midst of a recession, but something so important and pressing, there's no guessing about what the address will be. But this week, when President Trump announced he would hold a primetime address on Thursday night, he wouldn't say what it was going to be about. But then when he took to the podium last night in the East Room, he revealed this was all about election security, specifically what he described as new information he had received about vulnerabilities in our election system and accusations about an election he lost six years ago.
Let's go straight to ABC's chief White House correspondent, Jonathan Karl. Jon, what was he alleging here? Because there was a lot. There was a lot. And it was, you know, frankly, it was an unusual, to say the least, address for an American president for the reasons you outlined. But also, even in making his case that there is vulnerabilities to our election system, he said they're catastrophically vulnerable. He didn't appear to me to present significant new information.
Tonight, I'm announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure.
Some of the information he presented, it seemed to me, had almost nothing to do with election security.
For many years, Americans were blatantly lied to about the security of our election infrastructure, including electronic voting machines and ballot counting systems.
He got into this whole riff about voting machines being vulnerable. This is something that has been litigated and studied and investigated over and over again, including by his own administration, his own attorney general, Bill Barr, the people that he appointed to be in charge of cybersecurity in his first administration. I was going to say, he was talking about the 2020 election, but he was president in 2019, 2020. I mean, this is what is so unusual here to me about this address. One of the many things is that he talks about how the deep state covered this up and there was this great effort by foreign entities to manipulate our election against him. He was president and it was his people that were in charge.
But then he also made allegations about specific countries. Can we start with China? How is he saying that China would have played a role in Election Day? Well, he says that there's evidence that China hacked and obtained information in the voting rolls on 220 million Americans in 2020.
Tens of millions of voters' data in 18 states have been bought, stolen, or hacked by China.
