How did Alex Volkanovski first get into the UFC and what was his early career like?
Bog world to straight talk, mate. About time we did it again.
I know, it's good, it's good. Plenty's happened since then.
Mate, I remember a very long time ago, you came into our studios at um in the George Street in the city and um this is like Ma. It was pre COVID, I think. Yep. And um you came in, Tim Yzu came in, and uh you weren't the world champion at that stage. Um and I remember you know it wasn't far off that Tim Zoo became world champion, you became world champion. And um it's I I think I I I interviewed a couple of other guys during that month, but you two actually maintained the position. And uh you've come a long way. Here we are at Freestyle M MA. This is uh amazing Jim. We're gonna Tell me bat. How important is it for someone like you? To be fully responsible for the outcomes of all the hard yards they put into fighting.
For the day they retire. And I'm not saying you retire, but for the day they retire. What are you doing? Why are you doing all these businesses? Why what is that for?
Well, I mean
I guess the obvious answer is, yeah, we ain't gonna fight forever, right? We all know that. And uh I think a lot of athletes are uh starting to understand well everyone's it's that that's a conversation Everyone's always having. And I mean I think even the teams are having it now, the the the clubs, even the say rugby league, rugby league's gonna talk about it. I think it's everyone's pretty vocal about what are you doing outside of your sport because it was a big problem for athletes to just be athletes and then not knowing what they're doing after one once the sport was done and you've seen a lot of people really struggle with that. So there it's something that's always been talked about. I'll be honest, it wasn't something that I took serious enough till not that long ago.
Long ago. And I will bring in uh that I I still remember and and in that case, like what I'm talking about when I say that is I still remember just being a fighter, I remember you asking me on that podcast that you were probably talking about, um, would have been maybe six, seven years ago. Yep. Um, even Maybe yeah, probably not even that long ago. I can't can't remember what it was. Okay, there you go. And uh I remember you asking and you you talking to me about, you know, what my brand was. And uh I'll be honest, uh at that time it was like I'm just used to used to talking about fights and whatnot. And obviously with you, we're like, we want to talk business and I didn't have a clue. I really felt um you could even say
Lost for words. Uh like I I didn't know what to say. People you asked me what was uh what would you know, what's your brand? And I didn't know what that even really meant. I bring this up sometimes even when I'm talking to people, because I remember being asked uh by Mark Boris, like, what's my brand? I had no idea. I remember not knowing. And then now for me to be in this position where um I am setting myself up and doing so much outside of uh fighting where a lot of people, you know, sometimes gonna be like, Oh, are you still fighting? I see you do so. So much more outside of fighting 'cause Especially your
especially your socials.
Yeah, exactly. So there's so much out going on a lucky yeah and I've got a great team behind me. But I mean it ha it needs to be done. I'm uh lucky enough that I've been successful enough in my career to look after myself and and build, you know, you can say build your bit of your empire and um financially was I was quite clever, you know, I didn't spend too much money on myself and I was always investing and doing the right uh things with that. So I can I can say I do I exactly need things outside, I think you you definitely do, uh, 'cause you want to keep building uh that empire and building your brand and whatnot and have something to you know, that income to keep coming. Um but I'm in a great position just because of the sport.
But the fact that uh I do have so much outside of the sport that'll, you know, keep me You know, get a goals, task that I want, and then obviously look after my family and just be successful uh in so many other ways.
