But we were just saying that it started, and I mean, you, you know, oh, my God, you started the whole thing. But as soon as we saw you, straight away, the parents were just saying, we just went, oh, right, okay.

yeah i i've said it i said it then and i say it now to anyone that that will listen and i say this um very happily and openly um i think um i think connor is a generational talent i do because i think he can do anything he can make you laugh can make you cry he could uh threaten you he can do anything he can do anything he wants to do do you think he can eat snails i think we're about to find out i really hope so they were very subtly dropped

So I'm only in it thanks to him. It's the only reason I'm in it. Because... And then I remember going, they called me in and said, would you come and meet Ben, the director, exec producer, and JJ, our producer, and come and have a chat about this show. And I had read the first script. My agent just said, it's really good. And I read and thought, oh, it's really good.
So going in to chat about it was really, really easy. And they were so lovely and so... almost overly lovely. And I thought, this is kind of odd.
Yeah.
Because they're being so kind of engaged and really like, how do you like it? They were really worried. And now I see perfectly why, because they just knew that it had to be you. It had to be me. Thanks to him. So I just, I spend my life happily just sort of hiding behind his coattails.
When you first met each other and just your mannerisms and kind of, I mean, what's weird is that sitting here looking at the pair of you now, you don't particularly look like each other. Sorry, talking with my mouth full. But actually watching you on TV, you do. I mean, you just go, oh, my God, are they actually related?
Well, we went away for six months to a small island and studied each other.
That's not true. Someone said to me while we were shooting, they said, it's so funny what you're doing because I can see that you're like modeling, you know, it's clever. Oh my God. We're really not.
We're doing it. We're just allowing, don't we? Joe, can I just say?

And I think that's very much the same with sex ed. You can always be bonded by it. And I get, I mean, I get enormous compliments Again, as sort of one of the sort of older members of the cast, really sort of Gillian and I, I get such pride again in just watching how these extraordinary talents were found by Lauren Evans and then pieced together with such brilliant chemistry.
And that was a jigsaw in itself. And watching without fail, all of them. Yeah, all of them. They fly.
fly and that is just unbelievably wonderful i mean you know amy lou shooty emma connor i mean the list is endless and because talent was found discovered and and and kind of unleashed and i just think that's glorious really glorious and also doing on their own terms i think that's really important i think that's the key point we always felt like we were just mucking around really no matter how big the show got was there still a freedom yeah
Loads of freedom. You never know if anyone's going to see something. You make something and then you sit and just think, well, let's hope we find an audience, especially when we came out in 2019, which was all the streamers were throwing stuff at the wall as hard as they possibly could to see what was going to stick. And I've never forgotten me, Conor and Amy Liu. We met on the Monday.
It was 2019 and the show, I think, had gone out on a Friday or the Saturday. The first season had dropped on Netflix. And we met in a hotel coffee bar of some fancy-ass hotel in Shoreditch. And they were both sort of saying, do you think anyone's seen it? And I was facing the room and they were sitting just sort of looking at me. And I sort of turned around and looked at the room.
And 80% of a very hip coffee bar in a hotel in Shoreditch were basically nudging each other. Because there was suddenly three members of a cast from a show all sitting having a coffee. And I just remember saying to, I think we're going to be all right. Yeah.
Because you were all so recognisable and your characters were all so strong. I mean, you just, each one of you, you could just sort of just have the outline of each one of you and you would know who you were.
That's definitely down to, again, it's so nice now that this is the first year that Oscars are recognising casting. It had flown so under the radar. And, you know, Lauren, thank you, Lauren won't mind me saying that she was working for someone in casting and got a meeting to cast this show for Netflix. And she thought, I haven't got a cat's hell chance in getting this.
So I might as well just go in. And when they ask me who I think is right, I'll just tell them my current ideas. And so she just went in and just let it all hang out. And they went, yeah, great, great. And now Lauren, in a very short, she's amazing anyway. Yeah, brilliant.
