Hello and welcome to Tailenders! Hello and thank you for having us on your weekly, loosely, cricket and tennis sometimes wedding-based podcast, Tailenders.
This is G4's Greg James, that is Felix White and over there is Sir Jimmy Anderson. We also have Izzy Wong! Hello!
Hello! Hello! How are we? How are we?
Sorry, see what he says? How are we? Well, how are we? How are we? How are we? How are we? And where are we? I'm just going... Alan Partridge, how are you? I'm going to just caveat this entire episode by saying I'm in a place away for a friend's birthday with terrible... On holiday. Terrible Wi-Fi. So I'm trying my best. I've sneaked away... And I said, I've got an urgent call to make. So no one knows that I'm recording tailenders because I don't want them to know that I'm a workaholic. I'm happy with the listeners to know that. But also a massive crickaholic, as we know, cricket badgers, all of us. And there's so much to talk about. I was desperate to just hang out with you all and talk it all through and chat to Izzy about the test match and talk about the big retirements.
And obviously, Brendan McCollum. So just to say, Wi-Fi bad. If I go, just go on without me, guys, please. Leave the soldier behind and just do whatever you need and I'll join whenever I can. But big, big story. Brendan McCollum has been sacked as England men's test coach. We'll get into that in a second. But the biggest story of the week... Jimmy Anderson got Joe Root out in the Vitality Blast. And I would love to talk about your plans. Not for the first time. Did you have a plan? Was that the execution of said plan or was that... Oh, and Wi-Fi.
I think he might be finishing by saying, or was that just you bowling on instinct, Jim? I think that might be the end of his question.
The problem with Greg's Wi-Fi, I could just point out that we're obviously recording it so I could see his face. It's pausing it or stopping at the really bad time with his interesting facials.
I think it's pausing when he gets over animated. Yeah. When he reaches peak face animation.
He's tipping the Wi-Fi over the edge. His energy is making the Wi-Fi go.
And he has got an energy, definitely.
Yeah.
You're wicked, Jim.
Yeah, funny enough, like, I did have a plan. Oh, yeah. But didn't execute it particularly well. Right. So the first ball I bowled at him, I was thinking, right, his first ball, I think it was the last ball of my over, potentially. Or the first time I bowled at him. So I'm just going to bowl, like, test match line and lengths.
Why is Greg sneaking onto the show and how is his Wi‑Fi causing chaos?
Top of four stump.
Lovely.
Nick him off. Any bounce or movement, try and nick him off. And it ended up being a long hop sort of at his shoulder that got pulled for four. So I didn't go well. And then I thought, right, next ball I bowl at him, which was the start of my next over, try again. And again, I dragged it down a bit, but this time he top edged it to short, fine legs. So I can't really say that. I planned it and it came off.
Yeah. It was a bit of a fluke. It was one of those where when I saw it, I thought, oh, Jimmy won't want to celebrate that. It was that sort of dismissal.
Yeah. Well, it's not as bad as my next dismissal, which was caught like deep point from a wide half volley. Okay.
Welcome to the Vitality Blast.
That's a wicket I will not be celebrating ever. But yeah, no, it was a good game actually. I didn't play in the reverse fixture at Headingley. Playing the Roses game is always good.
Yeah.
As I said, didn't bowl great, but we won the game. So it was a good day. Good night.
Buzzing atmosphere?
Incredible atmosphere. Yeah, it was like, I think we had about, I think it was less than a thousand tickets left.
