Chapter 1: What is discussed at the start of this section?
Amazon presents Jamal versus the Shih Tzu. Descending from the gray wolf, Shih Tzus live by their own untamed primal code of not giving a single Shih Tzu. But Jamal shopped on Amazon and bought dog treats, chew toys, and 32 ounces of carpet cleaner. Hey Jamal, you've been promoted to pack leader. Save the everyday with Amazon.
Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. We got a couple big sweeps. Are the Phillies back? One mopping and it's gonna, gonna, gonna, gonna, gonna. It's gonna be me. Let's do it, Trev. Let's talk ball. Oh, shoot. Shane Boz.
Elston Howard. MVP 1963.
Get it out of the seats. Hello and welcome to Talkin' Baseball, presented by Fanatics Markets, where fans trade on sports. Fanatics Markets available now on the app stores. I'm Jake Storielli. That is Trevor Plouffe. Rob Scirocco on the ones, twos, and threes today.
Adult, just cooking in the sheet constantly as we try to get you guys as much baseball info as we can possibly give you with some, I don't know, some life tidbits, a couple silly things in between. That's kind of the show, Trev. How are you?
I'm doing great. You're doing great. I told you or tell the people who you look like today.
I threw on the denim jacket. It was a tweener weather day and you gave me a Vinny Chase, which that's that's high end for me.
That's pretty good.
A lot of times I'm bringing turtle energy from being honest.

Chapter 2: How are the Phillies performing under their new coaching regime?
10-21 for them. And then the Central... Kind of the opposite of the NL East. Every single team, 500 or better. Cincinnati at the top of the division, 20-11. We throw the ball. By the way, I'm watching a show about early settlers, and I just can't get Nathaniel Lowe out of my mind when I'm watching it, so that's your fault. Chicago Cubs, 19-12. St. Louis Cardinals, 18-13.
Milwaukee just cruising, lying in the freaking weeds, dude. 16-14 for them. And the Pirates, who just got mopped, 16-16. And then out west, two teams dominating. The Dodgers, 20-11, although they get the business from the Marlins. Padres, 19-11. Arizona, 16-14. Colorado! 14-18, and the Giants with the third-worst record in the National League, at least, 13-18 for them.
Those are the standings in the National League.
Well done. Trevor Plouffe. Today's episode is sponsored by Shady Rays. Shady Rays are built for real sports fans. So when you're at the game, you don't have to squint through the sun to track the fly ball. Maybe see the scoreboard or the ump blowing that last out call. Their lightweight frames are amazing. They don't slip off whether you're at the ballpark, the golf course, or watching the game.
Outside on the patio. And they're lost and broken protection. If you lose or break them, even right after you get them, Shady Rays is going to replace them. No drama, no stress, no replacement guilt. Just a new pair headed your ways. And good news. I'm wearing. I have two pairs of Shady Rays on right now. Not both on my eyes. One eyes, one chest.
Shadyrays.com, code TALKING50, 50% off two or more polarized sunglasses. That's TALKING50, 50% off two or more polarized sunglasses at Shadyrays.com. Well done. I think we start out with your guy Shelfie's fills. Obviously took some of the headlines this week. I think a lot of us were eyeing the Mets and potentially Mendoza in making a change. They make the Rob Thompson move.
And, dude, you want to talk about being a man. Rob Thompson taking the presser after being like, yeah, I owe the media one last conversation about it and takes a lot of responsibility while also being like, you know, these guys are better than that.

Chapter 3: What challenges are the Cardinals facing in their series against the Pirates?
And then Kyle Schwarber, basically the other side, being a man and being like, yeah, because we played bad, that guy lost his job. And they came out, and I don't know if you believe in baseball – Oddities, I think their first game after they fired Girardi and hired Thompson, they won 7-0, and then they walked off the next game. First games under Don Mattingly, win 7-0, walk off the next game.
I don't know. It's a little off the deep end. I think the bigger thing is they won three games. They sweep, I think, a decent Giants team, although the standings tell you slightly different. And they had some guys ball out in this series.
The Giants are a decent team. I think that's a great way to describe them. They're a decent team.
I think they are.
There are more Giants talk coming, people. Don't you worry about it. This one is about the Phillies. And look, yes, it is early in the season. They've gotten off to a horrible start. But a couple things happened here that they need to have happen to get back on track. Number one. Most important, Jake, win games.
Yes. Right. I was honestly going to say first series win since April 5th. You got to win, dude.
You got to win. You got to find ways to win. You got to dig deep. Get Crawford. You see here beating out the infield single to win the game. You got to have stuff like that going on. You got to have your big boys at the top of the order hit. Second game of the doubleheader. Turner and Schwarber open the game up with homers. That's nice. Alec Boehm has to do something.
He makes a nice defensive play to save a run in the 10th, and he walks him off with a sack fly. Beautiful. Nice try, Logan Gilbert. Everyone was so, like, the internet was so impressed with Logan Gilbert, like, letting that ball drop.

Chapter 4: What are the key takeaways from the Cubs vs. Padres series?
Drew Gilbert.
You're all right. You're all right. You know who I was talking about. I knew I was getting choked up talking about it.
I know. Usually when I say that, you do this. You didn't. I should have known. The internet was a little too rambunctious about that.
I'm with you, dude. I saw how viral that was going. I was like, that's... I don't know.
And then there's people like, why didn't he just hit the ball up to himself? It's like, no, that's also not the rule. Here's the big thing, though. They got to pitch, man. And Lozardo needs to be the guy that they brought him in to be, and he did that in game one. So a lot of things have to happen with the Phillies, but this is obviously a very nice start for the rest of the year.
Can we put the Rob Thompson 2026 era behind us? I don't know, man. It's a great start for the Phillies. I hope it continues, and I think it will. I think at the end of the year, we're going to be talking about the Phillies and playoff contention. I do.
Yeah, it's one of those. There's still a lot of baseball to be played, and when you see kind of how bad it was, like the Phillies just not winning series for basically a month, that's... That's a bad game plan. And Rob Thompson, that wasn't the game plan, but it's just what happened. And, yeah, it was cool.
We filmed – I shouldn't be teasing this because I don't think it's going to be out for a while. We're a new jam baseball video where we're reliving some big moments. And we ended up in some of the World Series moments last year, which was just insane. Like, I know we lived it and –
You can think of the Andy Pahez catch, like all these little things that in those moments, everything that got highlighted is like every player's skill and ability across the board. Alejandro Kirk has the final ground into double play that you're like, that's his one weakness. Like the guy's a freak show at everything else baseball wise. I know, right?

Chapter 5: What are the standout performances in recent baseball games?
What do you see, Coach?
Blue Jays have to be very excited to start getting some of their players back off the IL. You get your Savage. He looks great. Got a big pop there at the stadium. Toronto fans are a lot of fun. He's a stud, man. He's a stud.
Chapter 6: Which players are currently struggling in the league?
He's an absolute stud. Is it him? I think it is. I think he still has more starts in the postseason than he does in the regular season.
Ooh. I'm on it. God, yeah.
I hope I'm right on that one.
Doesn't sound right, but it's cool if it is.
Yeah, it is, yeah. Okay. Four games started in the regular season, five in the postseason, six appearances, but five games started. Jesus. That's like a funny stat to start off with.
That's good. It snaps you. I said it. If it's real, I like it, and it's real. Way to go, me. That's crazy. We watched him for a month.
The whole, like, Brian Bayo thing, I don't know if you saw that, kind of giving Chad Tracy the business on the mound, shaking his head, not wanting to come out. That's just kind of like, You could say, well, he's a competitor and he wants to stay in there. Say, well, dude, that's only if you're doing well. Right.
like you're not pitching well at all throughout the season not really this game either and boston is just trying to win fucking baseball games bro where you're at in the standings you can't be you could tell this is like he's like who is this dude taking me out where's my where's my manager i think that's kind of the gist we got here um yeah i again i for bayo you know the era 9.12 you don't
It's a lot easier if you got the 2-4-5 and you're like, give me one more out. But I don't know. Again, there's going to be a lot of eyes on Boston. And probably the biggest news out of this series, Crochet goes to the IL, which, golly, after their first three-game win streak of the year, that is not what Baston needed.

Chapter 7: What injuries are affecting player performances?
I think there's part of that that connects with you. And Trev, actual baseball-wise... Hey, positionally, man, you know, he's listed this game as the center fielder. Yeah, he plays everywhere. He's played all three outfield positions. He can play some infield that Matt Veerling fits in with that kind of Detroit any guy on any given day.
These hits are now comical because just tormenting Austin Riley a little bit. I'm happy you get to talk about these two guys because you love those two guys.
He's a Notre Dame guy. Him and Jimmy Claussen. I love Notre Dame guys.
Javi? Shout out Javi. Javier Sanchez. Okay, can't start talking. Boosted out for Jake. We can't start talking Javi right now. Man, I'm for the birds, man, and I'm going to Alec Burleson. He has a two-hit day, two doubles, three RBI, which I don't know, standout performance-wise, not necessarily what it was built for. Although I do think he's on fuego. I'll let you read the stats in a little bit.
Trev, I... I ended up, me and Rob ended up in a little giggle fest over here because part of the reason I wanted to pick Alec Burleson is he had a hit off Skeens where he just pokes it the other way. And I was like, Rob, get the home broadcast because it's funny. We also listened to the Pirates broadcast and we'll let it ride because, dude, it is such baseball comedy.
Oh, my goodness. And excuse me, RBI single. And the pitch is served down the left-field line. How beautiful is that? Weatherholt will streak around third, and he will score. Burleson has two more hits against Skeens.
So, yeah, the Pirates broadcast talking about it like it's such lucky BS hitting in the Cardinals broadcast. Cardinals broadcast being like, does baseball get any better? What a piece of hitting by Burleson. And that's kind of that's not his full approach at the plate. But I feel like you and I like highlighting guys that aren't swinging for the home run, just swinging to do damage to the ball.
And he's one of those guys. He had an 801 OPS last year. 801 OPS today, and he's part of the reason the Cardinals have had the success they've had this season.
The grizzled vet who's got like three-year service time, our guy?

Chapter 8: How are teams weathering the storm in the current season?
During Thursday's doubleheader, Schwarber became the first player since 1940. to record five-plus hits, three-plus walks, two-plus doubles, two-plus homers, and zero Ks in one day. That's a lot. That's an insane stat, okay? Aaron Judge, five for 11, two doubles, two home runs, two runs driven, and he's just sneaky having an incredible season. Yep. Just sneaky.
Cody Clemens, four for 11, a double home run, five runs driven in. Former twin, big biceps, big arms, tight friends. Four for 11, a double, a triple, and five runs driven in. He had a three-game multi-hit streak during this week. That feels good. Coming to the park, a couple knocks every day. Love that.
He's recorded a multi-hit game streak of three-plus games in each of the last four seasons, all four times with different teams. Okay. Wherever you put me, I'm going to bang, essentially. And for the week, Ozzy Albies. You enjoy his fish content. 13 for 27, three doubles, three homers, nine RBIs. He also looks like my best friend, Ollie Linton.
Yes.
Who I talked with yesterday. Cole Young. Nice job. You know what? We talked about the Mariners, and we didn't really even mention Cole Young because we got the big three there, but he's been a massive bright spot for them this season. 11 for 22 on the week, two doubles a homer, eight runs driven in. He has an RBI in six straight games. That's the longest active streak in all of baseball.
Matt Olson, 11 for 27, three doubles, two homeruns, six runs driven in. Fourth career walk-off homer, and his first since joining the Braves. That seems right. Wow. Okay. Go, Matt Elson, go. Bob Wood Jr. needed it. Eight for 26, two doubles, a triple, two homers, five runs driven in. On Tuesday, second career go-ahead homer in extra innings. His first time since 2023. He was playing ball in 2023?
Wow. Okay.
Wow.
Go, Bobby, go. That's Susan Flago.
