It's really great to be back in South Buffalo, and it's great to be with you again. We're coming up on a year. Last July, my son and I came out and did a show with you.
One of my favorite podcasts I've ever done. So I truly mean that. I truly mean that. That was a year ago at Sunny Reds. Owen was with us. I remember this very well because it wasn't planned for Owen to be on the show. You just suggested bring him. I was like, let's do it that day. And I'm really glad because that was a really fun and very insightful conversation. I'm sure this one will be as well. We're going to talk sports. We're going to do some fact or fiction with Bill Saber stuff. We'll get to some general other things. But one of... We'll do this right at the top. We'll talk about this right at the top. One of the very many reasons why I wanted to have you on this podcast with me today is because we're now close to the ride for Roswell, which is next Saturday, June 27th.
I got a story that I want to share. But before that. You're doing the ride for Wisewell. Let me start by asking you a pretty generic, simple, but a question that I'd love to know is what made you want to start doing Ride for Wisewell? Take us inside that a little bit.
Well, I mean, cancer, like anyone, has touched my family, my mom's. Mother and father both passed away from cancer. Her older sister also, my godmother, Rita, passed away from cancer. My older sister is a breast cancer survivor. And the late, great Jim Kelly. We're in South Buffalo. South Buffalo's own. Yeah. Meant a lot to me when I first started. So that's why.
Well, I appreciate that, and here's what I want to say, too, and I promise you we're going to have some fun today as well. We are going to have a lot of fun today, but this is important. You're so right about Cancer Touches Everybody, and I kind of want to talk about why it means more to me this year and why I am enlisting. I'm kind of jumping on the Bulldog bandwagon. I'll say this right away. I got lung issues. I cannot physically do the ride for Roswell. If I could, I would be doing it, especially this year, 100%, but I can't. So I talked to you months ago and said, you know, I would be honored if I could kind of hitch my wagon to you for your ride, for the followers of this show, for my personal friends.
I'm flattered to have your wagon hitched.
Well, so here's the story. And again, preface by saying it's not a unique story. There's nothing unique about it. Cancer does touch everybody. A lot of people, if you're a regular listener to the show, you know this already, but one of my closest friends for the past 25 years... Got cancer. He was diagnosed five years ago. And he passed away a couple months ago. And the staff at Roswell, I just... Months later, Bulldog, I mean, I'm literally right now on the air at a loss for words. I can't properly express how incredible the people at Roswell were from the diagnosis to the treatments. And earlier this past January, he was diagnosed with stage four cancer right off the bat. All right. So, I mean, it was bad from the beginning.
For four years, though, he... still lived you know what i mean and he did all the things pretty much you know he was still out he was i look at these barstools behind me and that's what kind of makes me sad because i've said barstools with him here probably more than anywhere else but anyway my point was this
