Good morning. This is Talking Devils, your favorite Manchester United podcast. I'm your host, Wayne Barton, joined by the legendary Dave Murphy this morning. Instead of the legendary Paul Parker. A legend nonetheless. How are you doing, Dave? You all right?
Yeah, not too bad. Not too bad. Nice sunny day. Heat wave is here. We'll be complaining within the hour about the heat and not the rain. So yeah, looking forward to that.
Unbearable for um, middle aged, bald white man. Um as as we are. Um it's too much. It's too much, Dave. It's too much. Um You know me, I'm not one to complain. Um Yeah, not one to okay. All right. Yeah. Well, certainly not about the football. Anyway, Manchester United won three nil at Brighton to conclude. Their Premier League season is a ground where we've had some Um my favourite word, shillakins in the past. Um s we've had some bad times down there um in recent years. Uh but we won three nil yesterday, very good result. Um Michael Kerrick uh completes the first half of um a season. in uh convincing fashion. Uh United were finishing third no matter what. Um so so that part of it was there was no problem. Um nothing riding on yesterday's result apart from for Brighton they were going for European football.
Um so U United um yeah, win in a way that we've not seen them win at Brighton um for for quite some time. In fact we've had some really difficult times there. Um I seem to remember there was a game Jose Mourinho's time where we we were battered. Lindelof and Eric Bay played at the start of the season, start of his last season, in fact, we were we were given a runaround there. Then Ralph Ragnick, we lost four nil down there, conceded three goals at the start of the second half. And we've had some we had a couple of uh bad ones besides I think I think that one, that game then was like the first th something like they won six out of seven against us and often played us off the park, particularly Old Trafford, they played really well.
However, we've righted that this season, we won twice twice against them. Um In fact, second goal we scored yesterday against p um Brian and Boomer, a goal that scored in the kind of fashion that they scored against us so many times, carving us open inside the box and scoring. Um You can only I mean it was hot conditions for those lads yesterday. You could tell it was difficult, but uh United managed to play some good football a p particularly when they went in from they really I mean they could have won by four or five with the way they played in the second half. As well. They they were really, really good. Um and yeah, all right, typical end of season affair, but we've seen United fall apart in these in the past.
So um what did you make of it, Dave?
Well Coming up to the last, you know, maybe six or seven games and uh, you know, I looked I looked at our last game of the season, which was obviously Brighton away and I did have, you know, a lot of concerns 'cause we've we've been absolutely battered by Brighton and completely paid off the bark over the past few seasons. uh by Brighton. So my concern was going into that game, requiring three points to get a Champions League spot. Um Turns out, you know, it didn't work out that way. uh which is fantastic. Uh but, you know, Brighton had everything to play for yesterday. You know, they they were they were unsure until, you know, three or four minutes after the final whistle whether they were going to get European football.
So they had to win the game. Um I honestly thought that, you know, going into the game yesterday. Was it dead rubber for United? what were we gonna gain out of it other than another win and a bit of momentum um keep that momentum going. But Carrie came out I think before the start of the game and and made that comment about no, it's you know, we're not on the beach, you know, this is Manchester United. You know, with the there's a there's a level that we have to strive for it and and we're gonna go out there and we're gonna try and win this game.
