Welcome to Saturday's United Daily Podcast. I'm Wayne Bartom with today's news and rumors. We begin with one of the most surreal stories from modern Manchester United history. And the World Cup, of course, has started in the USA, Canada and Mexico over the past couple of days. Um in US advertising and even some UK advertising. advertising David Beckham has been prominent, forefront in a lot of the advertising. He's had his uh little talk show as well. Um naturally Beckham was gonna be front and centre of the US um advertising, I guess, because of the fights he played so long over there and he was such a prominent uh figure in terms of the advancement of the MLS, the the eyes that went on the MLS. So there's no um question of why he should be forefront of the advertising for the competition out there.
That's a natural thing. However, overnight he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And um if I sound bemused by this, I s n not to do with the deserving o of it. I don't think um But I am gonna talk a little bit about this because it's one of the most um curious things in Manchester United history. Like we're talking about a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the kind of prestigious award that's given to the top entertainers in the world, um notably film stars and theatre stars and and music stars, those kind of icons, those are the kind of celebrities that are recognised on on the wal on the whole um Walk of Fame, you know, you walk down there and and you don't get to choose where you're placed, I don't think.
Um not I have any kind of inside knowledge of this, you know, these kind of names. I mean you've got the likes of the Simpsons are in there.

I mean that's a a a weird thing, but I mean the r the rest of the stuff it's like, you know, people that you would expect like Michael Jackson and Ah good great any any entity, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, all those kind of top movie stars, anyone you could name um as a star. Well, most people you you could name and and the point is that sometimes some of the big stars you do know don't have a a a w star on the Walk of Fame because it was kind of coveted, you know what I mean? It's a difficult thing to get and uh Um yeah, David Beckham was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Um this has been known for a couple of weeks, really, it's been public knowledge, but uh curiously the club media have not um didn't address this at all, they haven't marked it all overnight.
Uh maybe they'll they'll post something about it today, they probably will. Um but I I'm very surprised that they hadn't covered this event because it's one of the most surreal events in United history. Um and I am here to give you the historical context of this is why um anyone who listens to me or engages with my content was pr presumably why you do that. Matt Busby um took United to Hollywood in the you know in the nine nineteen fifty. You know, he was taking them over there and they were rubbing shoulders with people like um Clark Gable, you know, they were like having Hollywood parties with these people. The idea is that, you know, i Busby loved United. He'd been there for a couple of years at that point, but the idea of you know being able to take them into this celebrity world and they were just soccer stars.
They were playing games of football. They were in LA because they were playing Aztec of Mexico. Um they went back and they played there again a couple of years later. There was a bit of a riot in one of the games, you know, I I Talked about this on one of the podcasts I did with Paddy on the um Complete History podcast.
