Talk Sport powered by fans. This is Sunday's United Daily Podcast. I'm Wayne Barton with today's news and rumours. Manchester United began their pre season at well in Elsink yesterday. They played at the Olympic Stadium against Wrexham and they fell to a one nil defeat. Um yeah, scored just before half time. Sam Smith uh he'd um I think early Earlier in the match, he had um he attempted to clear a ball from a United corner and hit his own bar. Well, he um he scored uh the goal that decided the game in Helsinki. He's a a very much changed United side of as you would imagine, and it all changed again at half time. Just over twenty thousand in attendance, twenty thousand and sixty-nine, the official figure.

Um stadium. wasn't full by any means. Quite a disappointing attendance actually. A lot's been made of this trip to Helsinki. United's return there after many many years and um the club sent out an official entourage and everything like that to to deal with it and it's yeah very little attendance, very disappointing. Anyway, um United's first off team was Tom Heaton, Lenny Yoro Aidan Heaven, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw. A couple of first half tackles from Heaven and Maguire could be seen in there. They're very interesting. Andre Santos started, Mason Mount were in midfield. Brian Nbumo, Jack Fletcher, Patrick Dogo, and Joshua Xerxy all started from the bench in the second half. It was Vitek who stood. Looking for his move.

Camerson, Devaney, Arma, and Amas in defence. Collier and Tyler Fletcher came on, he wore the armband for the second half. Shea Lacey, Dango, Ethan Williams, and uh Ethan Wheeler. So a disappointing um start to preseason, but um Michael Carrick was quick to sort of downplay. The significance of the result. Um he said there's loads of little positives to take from the game. I thought Andre and Mason did some really good things and connected really well. I could see some positives. The top end of the pitch, just because it's a weekend, those sharp little movements and bright moments that you're looking for, they come as you progress to the weeks of trading. That is what it is. There were good signs from Andre on his first

Game. He's getting in the rhythm and the feel of it. It was good to see him in a red shirt. The boys have only been back together for ten days. It was just about getting through today, looking for some positives, looking for some good things. Knowing it wasn't gonna be perfect. It's only natural for the first one. I think the most important thing is everyone came through in good shape, no injuries, we can move on and take the s next step next week. Yep, uh no one's gonna get over uh no

Why did coach Michael Carrick downplay the significance of the 1‑0 loss?

Wayne Barton 3:03
No one's gonna overreact about preseason friendly, well, apart from the Twitter fans. The one thing I would say is that, you know, Wrexham are in the same place, you know. They they they've got the trading in the same conditions, they're still a lower league team. United should be expecting to be those kind of teams. You don't want to lose too many games like that in preseason because it really does damage your you know, a poor preseason l Y a g a great preseason doesn't guarantee a great season, but a post pre season really unsettles the start of a season and you know, I don't want to have too many um don't want to have too many um damp squibs of games and performances, do they? So um anyway, Jason Wilcox has been quoted in the uh club's yearbook, uh on the website and in the press.
Wayne Barton 3:52
He says he A year on uh from his last statement of of this kind, we can be proud of the progress and we've made that we have made toward our ultimate goals. We have taken great strides forward and can be confident that we have that we have the right structures, structures, and processes in place to achieve regular and sustained success in the future. Michael has done an excellent job and thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue as head coach of our Team, the results speak for themselves, with United picking up the highest points tally in the Premier League since he returned to the club.
