This is Wednesday's United Daily Podcast. I'm Wayne Barton with today's news and rumours. Big news yesterday was Mateus Fernandez has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur Q. meltdown within the Manchester United online supporters community.
Why did Tottenham agree to pay £85 million for Mateus Fernandes and how did United react?
Spurs were open to paying £85 million to get the deal done. So a price that United wouldn't pay. They always insisted they wouldn't go that high for him. Uh Spurs were in a position that um that they are aggressively wanting to spend this summer. They also um carried the score of losing out to Brian and Boomo in a similar circumstance last year. So they've paid the fifteen million pound or whatever fifteen to twenty million pound extra. That United were willing to pay in order to um um convince West Ham to sell. It was always likely that West Ham was were going to agree that deal before um the first of July. They did. Um Spurs surprising everyone by uh their willingness to go that far. United were hoping that they wouldn't and that they would um they'd be relying on the strength of the players' will, but it didn't work out like that.
Um Spurs paid the price and United just wouldn't go there. United did brief immediately that um you know they they'd done their sort of contingency plan. like they they weren't gonna overpay um and this will be a theme really as they move on to the next targets Carlos Baliber of Brighton um Alex Scott of Bournemouth United's um whole um their their whole operation this summer is gonna be based around the fact that they're not gonna overpay for for players

And um i it could be a bit of a problem. It could be I mean I I commend the idea that they wouldn't go straight up to eighty five million pounds. Uh Manchester City though have they've changed the the midfield market and so of Spurs really. S um City obviously went to over one hundred and fifteen million pounds to get Elliott Anderson done and that has set a precedent in the market this summer. Um the fact that West Ham stuck to their their asking price of eighty five million pounds and Spurs paid it, you're gonna find that another club is easily going to um add fifteen million pounds to the player that they want to sell or or that they they're willing to sell in order to fleece the the buying club.
That's the going rate in the market now. United didn't want to participate in a in an inflated market, but unfortunately It's other clubs who are dictating that, and at some point you kind of have to pay the price. Now, whether or not that price will be paid for Alex Scott is one thing. Bournemouth's immediate response to this was to brief that they are reluctant to sell him. They do have a new contract on the table for him that I think had the release clause of either 75 or 85 million pound. That was what r was reported. So again, it's a figure along the lines. Um, you know, he he's rated between fifty and sixty million pound um on the open market, but you know, you kinda add some inflation onto that.
Carlos Belibre, of course, Brighton were asking over one hundred million pound for him last summer. This was amidst Liverpool spending over one hundred million pounds on two players. Um

Um Believer of course had a postseason. United have a bit of bargaining there. Um whether or not they'll choose to go there as the next target, I don't know. But Brighton still they're not a club who sells if they don't want to sell. It's a very tricky situation for United at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how they navigate it, but they do at least have um I was gonna say the moral there's there's no moral high ground there but they do at least Have the the the um tradition now of the stance of saying they will not overpay to get a deal done. Um we'll we'll see what happens there. Bracio Dortmund, who um have quoted around the same kind of figure 100 million euros for Felix and Mecha. Um well he is holding out for a move to United now.
Um he believes the the basically he believes believes that there's no uh smoke without fire, so he's sitting and waiting to see if United come in.
