Welcome to Wednesday's United Daily Podcast. I'm Wayne Bartle with today's news and rumours. Manchester United were quick to rubbish the reports yesterday of Cristian Romero coming to United.
Why did Manchester United dismiss the Cristian Romero transfer rumours?
The Spurs defender was linked with a move to Old Trafford. the reports were coming from different places but I think United's name was just thrown in there because like I said yesterday, Lisandro Martinez plays for United and the two play together for international on international duty for Argentina but yeah No interest in United, as reported yesterday, but I think the club have briefed that everywhere. Not that it needed to be briefed, if they spent their time doing that for every player, and there's a few that I'll be mentioning today, that then they'd get nothing else done. United are still obviously interested in Matias Fernandes, no real development in that one, apart from the fact that the Hammers are now briefing they're not in a rush to sell him.
Of course, it was said that They would need to raise around £50 to £80 million following the relegation of the club. Obviously, they're going to need some money coming in to regenerate in order to bring some players in and stage a promotion push. You would think that they've accepted Fernandes as going. They're trying to stick to that £80 million price tag. I think they accept that they're not going to get that. United are still wanting to settle at £60 million and I think £5 million in add-ons. I think that's where everyone's expecting that deal to settle. It's just not there yet. United have been linked with a move for Carl Dahl, the former Leeds and current Welsh international goalkeeper, formerly of Forest and Newcastle.
Well, he's out of contract right now. He's 35 years old. A little bit surprising that United have been linked with him, but if they want to get an experienced goalkeeper in, and they've got an international standard goalkeeper there, is he really any worse than Altay Bayandir, who they'll be expecting to raise between £1 and £5 million for as he goes back to Turkey this summer? Not really. It seems like a sensible option if they want to keep the cost down. And they won't be doing the cost down for a couple of these midfielders. Three players being linked with United this morning. Well, two of them are familiar names. One's a new link. So, Newcastle are wanting £100m for Tonali. We know that United won't go there.
Alex Scott of Bournemouth is quoted as carrying a price tag of £80m. His contract expires in two years' time. Bournemouth are looking to rinse every last pound out of that contract. However, he's looking to sign a new deal at the club, but wants a release clause of around £75 million in there, which might be the conclusion. I can't see United going for Scott, even though he's the secondary option, shall we say. Elliot Anderson remains the pie in the sky option, but I think everyone accepts he's going to City, as I've said numerous times on this podcast in the mornings. His name continues to be linked with Old Trafford. We're still waiting on the developments at City, but it probably won't happen until after the World Cup now, so we can expect...
Those rumours to continue, with a new name being linked to United this morning, Igor Thiago, the Brazil international striker who did great stuff for Brentford last season, scored against United of course, only Haaland outscored him in the Premier League. Brentford though will want £70m for him, United were looking for a cut price option as they look to potentially replace Joshua Xerxe, who will be moving on hopefully. They want someone who is more likely to score goals, which is what you want from your forwards. I think they'll be put off by the £70m price tag. United have confirmed that they'll be playing AC Milan in the final match of their pre-season for the summer. They'll be playing that game in Poland on Saturday 15th August.
