I'm Jensen Holt-McNair. In today's passage, we will see Jesus perform a miracle. It's probably one that you know well. Jesus is healing a man who was born blind. And there's so much going on in this passage. Like most of the miracles that John chooses to share in his gospel, it both has physical implications. A man born blind now is no longer blind because of the work of Jesus. but it also has spiritual implications. John uses the stories and the miracles he shares to paint us a deeper picture, a spiritual picture, to remind us of who Jesus really is and what his actions and miracles show us about our larger spiritual reality. In this miracle, it's no different. And I don't want to gloss over something complicated or confusing, but we certainly will find something complicated and confusing in the first few verses, and I am not going to spend a lot of time on it.
Mostly because we have 10 minutes, and many others have done a much more thorough and intricate job at explaining this portion of the passage than I ever could. But also because it's not the portion of this passage that I want to focus in on today. But this passage, it opens with Jesus encountering a man who has been blind from birth. And the disciples ask, who sent him or his parents? Why is this guy blind? And Jesus says, neither. He was blind so that the works of God might be displayed in him. God has allowed this man suffering his blindness so that he may experience deliverance. And for this specific blind man, his deliverance is happening in this lifetime, right now, as he encounters Jesus. But before we get to that, Jesus continues.
He says, As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Okay, so this statement is packed full of good truths that we can glean. So first, let's focus on Jesus's claims about himself. He is saying that it is daytime because he is here on earth. He is alive. And he says that he is the light of the world. Now, this is the second time that Jesus has made this specific I am statement. But like his other I am statements in the gospel, Jesus is claiming something incredible. credible in his words. He is the light of the world. It echoes back to the Old Testament passages about God being the light of the world.
Psalm 27.1, the Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? And about the one who God promised he would send, who would be the light of the world, Isaiah 9-2. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned. See, Jesus is teaching his disciples a fundamental truth about himself. He is the one who was promised. He is God. Only God is the light of the world. Because of who he is, because he is here on earth, something has shifted for God's people. They have seen a great light. They have no reason to fear. And as we are about to see, they have new purpose. They have a mission, like a microcosm, a picture of the entire narrative of salvation and our call as believers.
As the light of the world opens our eyes to the reality of his saving grace, his deliverance, his promise of redemption and restoration, we are sent out by him to go forth and do the same for others. When we put our hope in him, Paul says we become a new creation. Jesus' gift recreates us, his life and death and resurrection. They give us the power to fight sin in this life, to spread his light, but also reminds us of his ultimate promise to return. to be our eternal light, to resurrect, redeem, and restore our earthly bodies into eternally renewed ones. That's our purpose. It's our mission. It's our calling in this life to be transformed by Jesus so that we can go out and bring light to a world in darkness.
Thank you, Jesus, for being the light of the world, for coming and bringing your light, for opening our eyes, for creating a new heart in us.
