What is the 2026 tech roadmap for short‑term rentals and hotels?

Bart Sobies 0:12
Okay, everybody, welcome back to another episode of the accommodation show. This week we don't have one guest, we have four wonderful guests from all over the world. We've got Ash Cohen calling in from Australia from a company called Wiz. We've got Sam Steele from Wesley uh calling in from Australia as well. We've got Kasha, who is in Toronto, I believe, and then we've got DePanchu. uh who is all the way, I believe that you're in your house in India, is that right? That's great. Fantastic. Welcome to the show everybody. How how are we going? Good.
Ash Cohen 0:48
Hey Bert. Doing good. Doing good?
Bart Sobies 0:50
Love and life, yeah. Fantastic. Look, um, this episode is all about trends, tech trends for 2026. And what I thought we would do is we'll get some people that are going to be at the Strive conference or their companies, get them into a room, have a bit of uh bit of a chat about what to expect, what's coming, why it's important to stay on top of technology. For 2026. What is the difference? What difference does technology make? And I thought what might be a what a nice place to start is to think about um short-term rentals in the past sort of let's say well at five to ten years and the impact that technology has made. Because I would argue that most people in this room are only in this room, uh have only been part of the industry, uh, is a tech supplier.
Bart Sobies 1:35
for the past five or ten years. And we've seen a monumental shift in short term rentals innovating in that space. So the first question for whoever wants to grab it, um, what have you seen in the past 10 years or what kind of effects do you think technology has had on the short term rental industry?
DePanchu 1:55
I think Sam's the best person to answer that, considering he launched his own company, went from You know, emoting a person to being a business owner and absolutely at the heart of technology space.
Sam Steele 2:07
Yeah, well, okay, I'll take it. Um, the the tech space we're coming up to our sixth birthday, so we're still relatively young in this space. Um, but the beauty is we kind of see the hotel side and the STR side. And what we're finding is the STR side is far more open to tech adoption. They're trying to find solutions for problems than the kind of legacy traditional hotel side of things. And I think that's quite unique. And I I think it comes down to the operator as well. They're all people that are are coming in running their own businesses. They're looking for better, faster, easier ways to do things. So um yeah, I see like a tech adoption is is is much more prevalent in STR space. Um I still think it's quite a cluttered market.
Sam Steele 2:56
Like we've got seems like we've got tech for everything and some of those solutions don't need a t a a take offering, but um yeah, it's definitely an interesting spice which will
Ash Cohen 3:07
I think I think Sam, your point around the tech for everything, it's uh that I've spoken to a lot of property management groups of late and they're getting to a point where they're sick of having the fifty tabs open that are controlling their business. And they're now starting to really look at how do they can start to consolidate those bits of technology uh to run their business and operate it in a more consolidated way so that they're not having to jump between tabs and the integrations. aren't working for them, so things are getting missed, uh, and they're trying to streamline the operations as well from the use of new technology that's coming out.
Sam Steele 3:42
Yeah, it's reducing that tech stack, right? And we as a PMS, we get so much pressure because people want to be able to do X, Y, Z and they don't want to go get a plug in or an integrations partner to do it. They expect their PMS to evolve and be able to to fill that gap. Um but I th yeah, I think that's like Overarching. I think when especially with AI, this buzzword that keeps get thrown around like um i everyone, you know, they want AI in the system but they don't actually understand it or or realise that All of our software has been using AI for the ever since we built it. It's just now Chat G P T's kind of more public and and they're expecting AI to be like user facing, but um
