Why does running a vacation‑rental business on gut feeling lead to losing money?
Okay, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of The Accommodation Show. This week, we are joined by an incredible gentleman called Daniel Leefield from Key Data. Welcome to the show. How are you, Bart? Doing good. We're in the afternoon over here. You are getting late into the night for yourself. Is that right? Almost 11 o'clock p.m. So Daniel's been in the industry forever. We recently have been bringing some more people onto our team and we're six years into it. And now that I've met you, we're just talking and I was saying, I wish that I had reached out to you 15 years ago Or six years ago when I first started to have a bit of a chat to get a bit of understanding of the landscape. You have been in the industry for a while, huh?
Yeah, I started in 2011. And it's been a really awesome experience just to be able to see from the ground level, especially because of where I live in Colorado. I think we're going to talk about that in a little bit. Yeah. I started in the industry in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and what we in the United States refer to as the Silicon Valley of vacation rentals because instant software and Escapia was two of the old systems. original systems in the industry, I guess you could call them, were run out of here, out of this valley. So there's a lot of spinoff companies. And so we've seen a lot of the growth in the industry in this valley. There's a whole bunch of us that are kind of been in the industry for a long time who all live here.
Yeah, well, because you came from sales and marketing and that sort of thing and then kind of fell into this short-term rental world, I guess, on the back of that growth and that innovation and being at the right place at the right time.
Yeah, absolutely. I'm the luckiest person you'll ever meet. I met a girl. She took me to rural Colorado. There was no radio and TV here that I could work for. And I had a face for radio and there was no radio station here.
How did Daniel Leefeld get started in the vacation‑rental industry and what is the “Silicon Valley of vacation rentals”?
So I was really in trouble. Um, and, uh, I, I looked up, uh, I found a marketing agency that specialized in vacation rentals and, uh, that was my minor in college was, was, uh, marketing. So that's where, that's what got me into this industry was somebody had an opening in the right place at the right time. And I'm just really lucky to be here.
Yeah, amazing. So folks, check out Daniel's LinkedIn profile because you're going to pick up a lot of what he's done in the past and also send him a message. I'm sure he'll get back to you and have a bit of a chat. But Daniel, I've been hunting to talk to yourselves or AirDNA or let's put it this way. I love to talk to data providers. And the reason why I love to talk to data providers is because, and by the way, I am aware that we'll be crossing over between data and data. So you stick to data, I'll stick to data.
Good luck. So I love the power
of data. And For anyone that's listening that hasn't quite understood the power of it yet, it drives everything. If you look at the biggest tech companies in the world, it's all data-driven. And one of the things, Daniel, that can feel quite weird and quite foreign with data is that when we talk about... an Amazon or a Netflix or a ChatGPT using data, you think, well, yeah, of course they are. They can control this information and serve up better adverts and do that sort of thing, which is great to know. But then I think for a lot of people, there's a big disconnect between what they're doing with their businesses and and how data can really affect our businesses and our everyday lives. And that's something I really want to talk to you about today is what key pieces of information are we missing as accommodation stroke short-term rental professionals?
what kind of data do we need to be thinking about for the future that we can access, that we can touch, and it's going to make a difference to our business. Whoa.
So we have, how long is this podcast? So 25 minutes now, but I'm taking, here we go. Let's get started. Well, I'll tell everybody this right now. If you want to have a really fun drinking game that gets you to a whole nother level on,
