Why does cleaning quality matter more than branding for short‑term rentals?

Bart Sobies 0:12
Okay, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the accommodation show this week. I am joined by the wonderful Noelia Novella from Duin. Welcome to the show.
Noelia Novella 0:28
Thank you, Bart, and thank you for the invitation to the podcast.
Bart Sobies 0:32
I've been looking forward to it. We met at VRMA. You run a company that's a smart operations platform which transforms how tr vacation rental companies, service providers, and co-living operators manage their day-to-day. My the story is that after traveling the world with your family and discovering just how inconsistent cleaning standards were, you built a solution, doin' to bridge the gap between hospitality tech Um, hospitality and the technology. And what began is a simple marketplace has grown into a global SaaS platform. You're used in 20 countries. You're partnering with National University of Singapore, which is really cool, uh, to bring AI-driven automation to property operations. Uh folks, today we're going to talk about scaling a tech company from scat scratch.
Bart Sobies 1:23
How Noelia built her business, got it to the stage where it is today. Um, and then we'll have some learnings along the way and things that you might be able to bring into your business, but also maybe some tips and strategies as to how you can improve your accommodation business. So After all of that, um I'm really excited to have you on and have a bit of a chat. We met at VRMA a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas. I'm just looking down at my table and I have a little uh sticker that says Las Vegas on it. Probably won't focus on there. Um and we're back. We're recording. Uh how was the trip?
Noelia Novella 2:01
It was long. I live in Singapore. It took me a while. Especially because we got an emergen um emergency medical emergency and so we we stopped in Alaska.
Illia Polosukhin 2:14
Oh wow.
Noelia Novella 2:15
So it was an adventure, but yeah, I managed and and the event is amazing, right? It was a lot of learning, a lot of uh new people I met there. Um yeah, it's just it's just the event, right? The global event.
Bart Sobies 2:29
Yeah. Because one of the things that we were talking about is that you uh your uh main presence as a business is in uh Portugal and um you also said Brazil. But I think that you also uh inherently uh like Europe is a big market for you guys.
Noelia Novella 2:46
Yeah, especially Spain is our biggest market. But also Italy, Greece, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany. We have a lot of clients there as well. So yeah, we are from Europe, right?
Bart Sobies 2:59
And it's interesting, isn't it? Because I mean I've been a lot of the events that I've been to are APAC, so around my area, but also a lot in the States and Canada. Um, but in terms of um this particular industry, I haven't really done the circuit in in Europe. Do you think it's uh a lot different to what you saw at VRMA?
Noelia Novella 3:20
Yes. I mean there were a lot of people from Europe as well in there. But mm yeah, it's more focused in in learning. um what I feel very interesting, but doing a property management company in the US versus Europe is quite different. The sizes are different, right? If we look at the as a five hundred eight units property management company, it's easier to find than in the US than in Italy, to give you an example. Well yeah, I mean the needs at the end of the day are the same. Uh the direct booking obviously uh and the the cleaning and all the operations um is one of the main issues they have everywhere.
Bart Sobies 4:03
Yeah, awesome. Yeah, look, I think it's interesting because uh the states it's interesting because it's it's made up of so many different states, right? Well, I see Europe is kind of made up of so many different countries and it's kind of the same thing where the state has got kind of its own laws, regulations, it's uh own taxes as well and its own ecosystem. But it does I think it comes together a lot nicer than Europe does, right? If you look at uh if you compare Poland and France, like it's it's yes, they're they're part of Europe, but they're they're so different in terms of hospitality and the terms of the way that things run. But in the States the uh the gap will be a lot less further apart. So a lot uh a lot a lot closer aligned.
