It's love that changes us. It's not rules and regulations. Rule have never brought out the the best in people. I mean, I I'm all for creating and enforcing healthy boundaries with love and respect and that there have to be a choice. But at the end of the day, like love is what makes people change and love is what transforms people. It's not rules.

So Joshua, thanks for being here. What does it mean to have heart first leadership exactly?
Joshua Medcalf 1:18
Well, to us it's really about putting people's heart first. You know, F. S. Lulis has a really interesting quote where he's already put first things first, second things aren't suppressed. to actually increase and so, you know, we really we really want people to focus on their death net, which sounds really morbid, but looking at it from that perspective and going, Okay, on my on my death bed, what's really gonna matter? And if that's really what matters there, then that's what I need to focus on today. And typically when you ask people, you know, what do you want to be remembered for? And, you know, I I lost my little brother whenever I was nine years old, but I lost my dad whenever I was twenty one.
Joshua Medcalf 1:52
And so I this really interesting framework that I saw the world through and it was like I don't want to end up on my deathbed and you know be really successful from a monetary perspective or some type of a result or championship perspective but but it really um really look back and go man I I really messed up a lot of the most important relationships in my life and and I really used people to get results And so I was really transactional with people instead of being a transformational leader. So for us that that really starts with putting people's hearts first, above and beyond performance. And and what we found over and over again is that when we will actually put people's hearts first, and that has nothing to do with being soft and uh easy on them.
Joshua Medcalf 2:37
We believe that we we believe in raising the standard for people, but we believe in doing it with love and respect. and really putting them first. And when we do that, what we found is that like CS Lis said that those first things will increase, um, but also the the second things will increase as well. But they're only trying put the second things first, like, you know, money and the the results and you know, power and status, fame, all those things that that ends up messing everything up.
Unknown 3:05
So the title of your first book was called Burn Your Goals. And of course, you know, that's kinda like that'd be the opposite of what you usually hear have goals, write your goals down. You gotta have goals. People with goals make more money. So what's that all about? Can you talk talk through that a little bit?
Joshua Medcalf 3:20
Yeah, I mean I I finally got really frustrated because so many people were were coming to us with these with these big huge goals and you know more and more people were telling them you need to set bigger goals than and really all that we found is that it you know it's like a wish list and you know most of us have have outgrown Anta Clause and realize that Anna Clause isn't real and and that's how we look at most goals.

What does “heart‑first leadership” mean and why is love more powerful than rules?

Joshua Medcalf 3:42
Like what we've found is we want people to focus on their commitment. You know, what are you committed to doing with your 86,400 seconds every single day to close the gap between who you are and who you want to become, between where you are and where you want to be?
