Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This podcast is part of the Sports Social Podcast Network.
It's a morning reaction show. We've just come in. We made the cup of coffee. We went through the day's schedule. Then we had a bit of Romano just tossing it all out.
Just as we finished talking about what we're going to do today, Romano decides to blow all of the water with a here we go on the new manager.
Yeah, he has said Liverpool reach agreements in principle to appoint Adoni Areola as new manager. Here we go. A few of the others are saying there's still a little bit of work to be done, but
listen whether we like it or not the man who speaks to all the agents doesn't he got the slot thing first you know he was he went with areola so it's a fairy straight on so if he's saying it that it's that it's done then it looks like he's done it's going to be liverpool manager yeah i think so as well whether you like the age of you know twitter accounts breaking news stories for your club or not romano is one of the biggest journalists never just looked at 28 million followers so like he's sticking his neck on the line if he's not sure
It looks like it's going to be a viola. I'll be honest with you, I'm excited, John. I feel really excited since I've seen that. I've known for a few days that he's the number one target, and I've spent hours on YouTube watching mic'd up Bournemouth sessions and all sorts, and I'm starting to get really excited by it, but there's obviously...
The element in the room is he's not won something before, and that was the one concern that I've got. To be a Liverpool manager and not have the experience to win the trophy, it's unusual that one comes in and flies with it. But this does feel a little bit different. He's so highly rated, he speaks so well, and it's the football that we're all dying to see.
It's the football that we've all been looking for all season.

Chapter 2: What news did Andoni Iraola's appointment bring to Liverpool fans?
We're going to attack teams again, we're going to put teams to bed by half-time and hopefully win some titles.
Yeah, excuses if we're on our phones a little bit. I think you'll excuse us for this one. It is obviously a rapidly developing story. It should be said that Paul Joyce has written this morning. He's gone from Liverpool closing in on Andoni Arreola's appointment. So he's saying that it's not quite as advanced. But you either think it's very, very close or it's absolutely done.
But as I said, he is going to be the next Liverpool manager. And I'm with you, Keogh. I am excited as well. I was a little bit unsure at first because, you know, he's not the... The big, huge name that's going to sort of get you really excited. But I was a bit like that about Arnaud Slott, but then he won the league in his first season, so we all could do the same.
But what got me excited is I've done a couple of calls yesterday that have encouraged people to check out. It's available for all your subscribers.
on the app and I think we did one of them with Sam on video as well but I spoke to a few people who've watched a lot more of them than me so first of all Sam from Back of the Net podcast which is an excellent born with podcasting and YouTube channel and he spoke about
his personal dealings with him the fact that he'd met him a couple of times and how he was with them as well but also just being a season ticket holder there he goes home and away and watching them and I said what are the big Areola games that you can remember and he talked about well first of all the first one he did was when they were 2-0 down at Goodison Park and turned around and won 3-2 and I thought he'll do for me he'll do for me
But he talked about these games where he's had a big impact with the players that he sort of helped develop and things like that. And just the fact that they all knew that he was destined for bigger and better things. And, you know, they're wishing him well because they know he should be managing on that higher stage.
And then I spoke a little bit later to Jonathan Norcroft, who's a phenomenal coach. journalist for the Sunday Times.
It's so interesting what he said about him. Really interesting, especially the club thing and the style of play. Because I've seen a clip, it was at a Masterclass in Mariola, he talks about the Spain side of 2008 and 9. And it was a couple of hours later, I've seen him talk about the fact, you know, he likes the German style of football, he likes pressing high up the pitch.

Chapter 3: What are the initial reactions to Iraola becoming Liverpool's new manager?
And as a result of that, it is very direct. It's very front foot and it's very kind of get at them. And yeah, just hearing him talk about his style and how he wants to play football was really interesting. So I did those two calls and afterwards I was like,
My last question as well, I'll say to Jonathan Norcroft, if you were Richard Hughes, he was a year one, he was at 100%, and I was like, you'll do for me. Jonathan Norcross never said me wrong before, and I just feel like he feels like someone who's really suited to what the supporters are after right now.
I think what's key for me is, you look back at Jürgen, and we're obviously going to have to use him as an example because of the success. When Jürgen came in, 100% the fan base was on the same side. All wanted the same manager, all thought we were going in the right direction and if something special happens, Do you think this is an appointment where the whole fan base is behind them?
Do you think everyone's going to be happy with this appointment? Or do you think what the concern that we had about the trophies, et cetera, might make a couple of people apprehensive?
Yeah, it's a fair point, Keogh. Listen, I don't expect everyone to do what I do because it's our work, isn't it? So not everyone's going to get on the phone to a journalist who knows them well or get on the phone to Sam from Back of the Net. So I keep going to call it Back of the Cop, Back of the Net podcast it is. And so, you know,
so people you know haven't got that with that luxury sort of if you like so i understand that people are a bit sort of apprehensive because he's he's coming from bournemouth you know it doesn't matter always that almost how bummer through bournemouth finished one place behind us last year by the way and if you can compare the budgets of the team he's probably dealing on what a fifth
of what Liverpool are. And so he's got his team to one place behind Liverpool. So we need to remember that. But still in your head, it's like, well, it's the Bournemouth manager who's coming here. It feels like such a jump up. And listen, it is a massive jump up because, you know, it's going from a team who be happy
delighted with six probably, I'm sure it's their best ever finish to a team with a second and a manager on fifth. So there is levels, obviously. He's going to be managing in the Champions League for the first time. He's going to be just generally having the
challenges of europe and everything else and so he's in that situation now where you know he's having to you know cope with these new things that he hasn't had to before then there's just the pressure of managing one of the biggest clubs in in europe so i get anyone saying well let's see but i do think there's an attitude at the moment of

Chapter 4: Why is Andoni Iraola considered a suitable choice for Liverpool?
Now, maybe because we had to win the game and he didn't do it, maybe we would have been better qualified and he may have said something and let him do something for the club. But it feels as if
decision has been made between the last game of the season and and last weekend and something's changed and i don't know what it is because he put himself in the in the hat area didn't he said he wasn't he wasn't interested in the ac milan job he likes the liverpool job or leverkusen job two or three days later he's he's got the job yeah which makes me think of i've liverpool let him present i've liverpool let him come in and you know he's presented to
Edwards and Hughes, and they've gone, Jesus Christ, this is the man we need, this is the man the players need, this is the man the fans need, and this is the man the club needs. If that's the case, then, full steam ahead.
It's a really interesting one, isn't it? And one we'll never truly know. Obviously, we've all got people who we trust, who we write online, and that might be kind of different people, depending on who you are, and that's fine. But you hear little things about how it's... how it has moved from March onwards.
But unless you are Richard Hughes himself, I wouldn't say that anyone would completely know. But what does seem to be the case is that he felt like he was carrying on. And so all the noise that he's been making and since you come out that he felt like the system was about to be higher. There was a guy sort of coming over.
So I do believe the timeline in terms of when he was told, because that seems fairly consistent with what his behaviour's been like, how he's been talking, and also what a lot of other people have been saying. He found out Saturday morning and then the announcement was an hour and an hour and a half later.
And so I feel like that is true, but in terms of when Richard Hughes and or Michael Edwards, when they were starting to change their mind on it, we may never truly know, but I do think it was get to the end of the season and we'll have a review. I'm sure they were having conversations before then, between them, you know, listen, this is bad, isn't it?
I did read that, you know, Richard Hughes was at the Chelsea game. I can't believe he's not at every game, but that's for another day. But, you know, he was at, and I think the Chelsea one was, It was lively in the crowd, wasn't it? And not in a positive way. It's obviously the one where the boos come from Ingram.
There's the frustration in terms of, you know, how the team are playing, how they let, you know... If they eye-test that one, they'll put a goal up and then just completely stop. Yeah, exactly.

Chapter 5: What concerns do fans have about Iraola's lack of trophy-winning experience?
There was a couple of leaks on Iriola online a couple of weeks ago, so maybe this has come from us as a club approaching him and saying, Not saying it's definitely happening, but if Liverpool became available, if they decided to be one, would you be interested? And he's gone, yeah, absolutely.
And then obviously done that interview that you mentioned where, you know, it was agents or whoever, but it said like, oh, you know, them and Leverkusen he was interested in. And so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it wasn't necessarily conversations of,
we're getting rid of him, I'm up for it, but conversations about like, listen, if sometime in the future the Liverpool job was available, would you be? And that feels like, listen, it's a little bit slight if that has happened because it's behind the manager's back and stuff like that, but also,
in the growing way of the football season to wait to the end of the season to do it and that's when you're supposed to do it so the club will wait at the end of the season reviewed the season and made a decision yeah i'll be honest that's exactly what i was asking for when people were making calls in november and december about the manager even in january and february and march right right through right through from christmas time there's been lots of calls to you know after bad results to make a decision on the manager and i've always been get the end of the season and make that decision and review it and that's what they've done so i'm i'm pleased about that to be honest because because
I wouldn't want to see Liverpool in a situation where they were in the middle of a season, scrapping around for a manager. This feels right. If we can make a change, make a change a week after the last game, give them a full pre-season, a full transfer window, and then we go and attack next season.
Absolutely. Attack next season. I hope you're excited because listen, when the fans are excited and if we can bounce into that first game of the season, hopefully it's at home. We don't know yet. We're all excited as well. All behind the new manager with a few new signs as well, maybe more than a few to get behind as well. Then that'll obviously help the team. Yeah, that's us from this morning.
We'll obviously continue to follow it. We'll continue to make stuff as it develops. But if you haven't already, do check out those shows that we've talked about that we released yesterday. So you've got myself with Jonathan Norcroft. That's available for audio subscribers. You've got myself with Sam from Back of the Net. That's available as audio and video for our subscribers as well.
Also, Neil spoke to James. Roach, who's another Bournemouth fan, and I know that got Neil excited. James Roach watches obviously a lot of Bournemouth, is a huge supporter, has done over the last few years. And so he was really pleased when he spoke to James about how abusive he was of his praise. And so do check that out as well.
And there's loads of great stuff on the Amphibia app at the moment. I'm not listening to the review special on the manager yet, but I gather that was really good on Sunday. So do check that out. And loads more stuff coming in the next few days as well. We've got some special guests coming in. It's going to be all goes. It's a big week. It's a big week.

Oh, well, I doubt it has become vegan. It just wants something better to grill. Go get Lidl's grillmeister's chicken wing. It won't open the lid. Grillmeister. Grillmeister. Grillmeister.
