This is Andy Heaton at Melwood. Delighted to be joined by the LFC women's team manager Gallet Taylor before the start of the season. Gallet, thanks so much for uh coming and speaking to us this morning. No problem. Um So First off, you've been here well, a year now, pretty much. Um and we all know that you didn't get much of a preseason last year. How much is that time that you've had with the squad since the start of last season to now be valuable to
you? Yeah, it's been really invaluable. I think, you know, that's where you really start to build things as a as a team on and off the pitch. And I think uh yeah, that just allowed us to have the time. Like you said, last season was so difficult. I think we came in mid-August, um, literally went straight into pre-season games, so didn't really get to work with a group training wise, and we were chasing our tail a lot on a lot of things. Um so there's a lot of lessons learned from from that. I think that time is like a real premium for head coaches. Everybody knows that. If you're a head coach that you don't get much time. But you would expect preseason to be like s you know, something that's so, so important because that's where you really build the foundations of what you want to do in a season, how you want the team to look, all of those things.
So we've been really pleased with how pre season's gone. We had a a good week away down in South Wales where we started to like really uh Uh provide cohesion for staff and players and new players that are coming into the building. Did you get involved in the pub quiz? Yes I did, yeah. You did? I did get on. Yeah. Uh no, we were poor. We were really poor. Um got thrown off because I was actually one of the photo fit pictures. Right. Make it sound like Crying Watch. But um And then that was our weakest thing because we thought then there was g gonna be a lot of staff members being showing up on it as well.
How did a limited preseason impact the squad and what lessons were learned?
So like yeah, it was it was good. It was good fun. And um yeah, we're not the best at quizzes on our table.
Um, you mentioned pre season and the importance of it. Do you think Phil that that that's something that's overlooked maybe in in all levels of the game? Like trying to just get your blueprint down and get your message across to the players because obviously once the season starts, it's just constant and you know, it's difficult to navigate with injuries and form of fitness to maybe get that message across during the season.
Yeah, it's ideal to have that time. But I think if you look back at last season and you saw the upturn in the second half of the season for us in performances, in results, that came from the work we did in the first half of the season. So like i it's mad really, but our preseason was the first half of the season. as new new coach coming in with new team and working on new ideas, we had to use that first part of the season to get ourselves fitter, to get ourselves with more cohesion, to get ourselves a better understanding of how we wanted to play. And we started to see that in the second half of the season by having a decent January window where we brought additions into the club that helped the team progress on the pitch.
Just last one or last season 'cause I know we want to talk this season but When someone who watches the the women's team, you could see even when the results weren't great or what you wanted in the early parts of the season, you could see on the pitch maybe the Trying different things and new ideas. As a coach, as much as the results are the most important thing, when you see that progression on the pitch. How how is that for you? Do you do are are you not satisfied with the results, but just seeing that progression and and trying the new ideas and a and a and a sense that
