Hello and welcome to the Art of Decluttering podcast. I'm your host, Amy Revell. Today, I'm really excited to have a guest with me, Laura Smith from Get Organized HQ. You've probably seen her on YouTube. You've probably seen her on Instagram. She's like the organizing queen. It's not about like having perfection though, but it's about having a home that works for you and functions well.

Who is Laura Smith and how did she start Get Organized HQ?

Amy Revell 0:24
Welcome Laura. Thank you. I'm so excited to be here. It is so good to have you. I loved being part of your conference last year. I'm really excited to be part of it this year. Tell us a bit about you, what you do, what you love doing in your workspace, and how can listeners get to know you a little bit?
Laura Smith 0:43
Yeah. So I'm Laura. I live in Indianapolis. I have two kids. They're 10 and 11. And I started this business. Oh, my goodness. I mean, I think it's like 14 years ago now. I started in 2012. It was just at the time, it was just a little blog. And then it kind of evolved from there. And really, the reason I talked about organizing was when you create any content online and when you blog, you have to pick something that you can talk about. for years on end without getting tired of it. And organizing and really just creating a home that's a place of peace was the thing I just naturally loved. And I knew, you know what, I can talk about that and never get tired of it. So that's kind of how I landed on that side of things.
Laura Smith 1:25
And I really do love organizing.

My nephew said to me just this week, he said, are you still podcasting about decluttering? And I was like, yeah, because I will never, ever, ever run out of, I might not podcast till I'm 80, but it's not because I'll run out of things to say. I love that you feel the same way. I was watching one of your videos the other day, Laura, and one line just stood out to me and I ran and grabbed my phone and I just like typed it in. I was like, that's so good. And you said, you don't have to like it. You just have to do it. And I was like, oh my goodness, I feel like if we could tell every young person, like that should be something they're taught in school, right? And so I quickly reached out and I was like, Laura, come and share this wisdom of like, because sometimes when we're content creators, it can feel like we always have like so much motivation to do all the things.
Amy Revell 2:17
The reality is like, nope, it's a job for us too. Sometimes we just have to do the thing. So tell me a little bit about the, you don't have to like it, you just have to do it. And I'd love to know, like, when is it time when you decide I should wait for motivation and it's okay to wait for that? And times when you're like, I'm just going to have to push through because that thing needs doing.
Laura Smith 2:40
Yeah, so true. So that's just kind of like one of my mantras that I say, you know, you don't have to like it. You just have to do it. I really tell my kids that all the time because kids kind of think that something is wrong if they don't enjoy every little thing that they're ever asked to do. And I'm like, that isn't really how life works. And if you take this into adulthood, your life is going to be a little rough. You know, I hate to break it to you, but we adults kind of have to do a lot of things that, you know, aren't our favorite. So I just, you know, you don't have to like it. You just have to do it. And I think in the video I was talking about how I've taken up running in the past eight months.
Laura Smith 3:13
It was that, yes. Wow. It's not delightful, I must say. I mean, it's kind of hard. And especially lately. Oh my goodness, it's been so hot. And it was hot. Yes. And so when I get in the middle of a run and I'm like, oh my goodness, I want to stop. I'm like, that's okay. You don't have to like it. You just have to do it. I think so often, like we panic if we don't like something. And I'm like, no, really, it's fine. You know, you don't have to like it. You just have to do it, you know? And somehow that just makes me be like, oh, okay. Like, because if you think something is wrong... you'll kind of panic and it's, you know, but if you think, nah, that's normal, lots of people do stuff, you know, they don't like.
