Why is the corporate environment feeling especially exhausting right now?

Jessica Guzik 0:00
The past year or so, in my opinion, has been one of the most difficult and exhausting times to be working in the corporate world. I've been coaching professionals for almost six years now, and I would say the past one to two years have been the most tiring, the most intense, the most challenging, and I I wanted to record today's episode to talk about that because if you're feeling burnt out or discouraged or you're struggling to feel genuinely motivated in your job, I want you to know that you are not alone. And more importantly, I want to share some thoughts to help you reconnect with your inner spark and reconnect with your motivation. If that is something that you genuinely want. When the world around us gets difficult and noisy and exhausting, it can really be hard to then stay connected to the parts of us that dream of something bigger and that dream of growth and change and evolving into a bigger version of ourselves.
Jessica Guzik 1:14
And if that dreams Dream is still important for you. I want to share some perspectives with you that will help you reconnect with your desire to grow and reconnect with those dreams during a time when I think it's extra hard to do that. So I'm gonna cover a few different things in today's episode, starting with a brief explanation of why. Working in corporate feels hard and exhausting right now. I won't spend too much time on this because you're living in it. So you probably understand this deeply. But there are a few variables happening all at the same time that I see degrading quality of life for working professionals in a meaningful way. So number one is persistent layoffs and restructuring. Number two is a lack of growth opportunities.
Jessica Guzik 2:10
A lot of companies are communicating to their employees things like, Hey, don't expect to grow anytime soon. We want you to do good work and we want you to do more work, but don't expect a promotion. That can be incredibly discouraging. The other pieces that I'm seeing is of course our friend AI is not only Getting rid of certain people's jobs, or at least that's what companies are saying, right? Like they're laying off people and then blaming it on AI, but I'm not entirely convinced that AI is truly displacing those positions. But either way, AI is causing a lot of chaos. It's causing restructuring. It's causing people's roles to change in scope. So, some of you may not be doing the things that you enjoy most in your role because you're being forced to use AI, which isn't what you signed up for in the first place.
Jessica Guzik 3:04
And the final piece that's making things hard right now is a lack of caring and investment in the people that make a company run. I've been out of the corporate space. Now since 2021. So it's been a while. And I was reflecting on when I used to work a nine to five and I used to be in corporate. And I had this moment of dissonance because I remembered what it was like to be at a company that deeply cared about its employees and cared about its workforce and wanted its employees to be happy and to have the Resources that they needed to do their jobs well. And I had this moment where I realized, like, oh my gosh, we are so far away from that right now that that seems strange to me. Like, I can't even process that that was my reality.
Jessica Guzik 3:59
And I think if you've been in corporate this entire time, it might not be as jarring for you because it's been happening gradually. And so I That can make you question yourself and ask yourself, like, am I going crazy? Are things really different and worse than they used to be? And I want to say you're not going crazy, things have changed. There is a massive disconnect and a massive difference there. Now here's the thing. I can't solve some of those bigger things. I can't predict the future in terms of how is AI going to continue to change the workforce. But what I can do is I can help you get reconnected to feeling motivated and alive and feeling like you have a real purpose once again, if that's something that you want.
Jessica Guzik 4:48
Now I I want to be super clear. This isn't me telling you you need to push harder and work harder and do more.
